What the Veeck: Crazy Ballpark Promotions 2010

Let's start off with the local champs, your Brooklyn Cyclones... who, in the manner of shore-borne champs the world over, enjoy a good fist pump every now and again.

On Wednesday, July 21, the Brooklyn Cyclones will be hosting "Jersey? Sure!" Night – paying homage to a pop-culture phenomenon and giving away limited-edition collectible jerseys. The high-quality mesh jersey will feature the Cyclones logo on the front and a picture of the team’s mascot, Sandy the Seagull, in a fist-pumping pose on the back, with the words “Jersey? Sure!” at the top. The first 2,500 fans in attendance on July 21st will receive a jersey.

In addition, the Cyclones are offering a try-out to a popular MTV star. WFAN’s Boomer & Carton recently discovered that prior to his newfound celebrity, in an effort to “impress the ladies,” Jersey Shore’s Mike (“The Situation”) Sorrentino falsely told people that he was a back-up third baseman for the Brooklyn Cyclones. The Cyclones are now inviting The Situation to make his dreams come true by taking batting practice and ground ball drills with the team.

“We thought this would be a fun way for us to incorporate one of the hottest trends of the year into our already-unique entertainment,” said Cyclones General Manager Steve Cohen (who also goes by the nicknames "Stevie Sweetheart," "DJ Stevie C," "Co-Co," and "The Perspiration"). “We still think the Coney Island shore is the best in the Tri-State area, but we’re willing to give Jersey its due…at least for one night.”

Also included: Techno dugout-dance battles, gym-tan-and-laundry giveaways, and Snooki-type blowouts by local stylists. (Not included: ham, water, or lady-punching lessons.)

In related news the park will no longer be known as Keyspan Park.

And this clown is being rewarded for this crap?

Really? Really guys?

First of all, the success of this trash makes me wonder how truly F'ed this culture is, but that's another rant, but the fact that one of these Andy Warhol-ers is getting more than his share of 15 minutes because of some minor league promotion?

Big League Stew brings you scheduled highlights from this year's major league giveaways. Action figures! Snuggies! Um... Garden gnomes? Skateboards? Grass seed?

Grass seed! The Reds are giving out bags of that Scott's Great American Ballpark grass seed (April 24). Now your Schottzie at home will have somewhere nice to relieve itself.

Or, y'know, to do a tightly-coiled impression of Cincinnati middle-relief.

Your league leaders in swagness-cool? Probably-- as always-- the Pirates, giving away Garrett Jones action figures (really? and 5/22), windup pierogie racers (5/23), commemorative stein (6/19), a Pittsburgh Crawfords hat (against the Mets on 8/21), and a Roberto Clemente Bronze Bust in conjunction with Haiti relief/rebuilding (9/17).

Home Run Apple bank on Opening Day. Kinda sweet. (As is the scarf they're giving away next Saturday, before the second Nats game.)

Little else worth noting. Sadly.

Re: What the Veeck: Crazy Ballpark Promotions 2010

I might buy that, were it a regular item offered. I kinda wouldn't mind that becoming a CitiField sartorial staple... but it kinda feels like we'd need a fight song to go with, no?

That scarf definitely has that English soccer feel and look about it , the new fight song should also have that.

And who'da thought that a douchey promotion involving Jersey, Brooklyn, and bad stereotypes could get Boomer & Carton involved?

Please don't ever sing that song at a Mets game.

I want a bank. One of you Opening Day fellahs and/or ladies hopefully willing to part with one of yours? It's for, um... the kids. Yeah.

Re: What the Veeck: Crazy Ballpark Promotions 2010

1 part cool, 3 parts creepy. Okay, maybe just 4 parts creepy.

By itself, the Tim Lincecum(notes) bobblehead doll giveaway set for July 17 probably would guarantee a sellout crowd at AT&T Park, with lines around stretching the block to ensure they're early enough to get theirs.

But the ad wizards at 24 Willie Mays Plaza have kicked things up a notch, adding an unusual feature to a select number of Timmy's dolls sure to make them, uh, unique collectibles...

...The first 20,000 fans will get a Tiny Tim bobblehead, but only six will be "lucky" enough to walk away with one that features "synthetic" hair.

I'll be at that game too. Debating the ethics of sticking that bobblehead on eBay to offset the ticket price.

What's unethical about it? You get the hair one, then sell the crap out of that thing, and then donate the money to Locks of Love or something.
