Gregg Jefferies

One of the big failures of the Johnson/Cashen Mets was letting this situation get so out of hand.

I didn't know the guy had more than a decent career. I only ever heard about his time in NY, even when he's mentioned in the booth it was negative.

He was doomed by the expectations, to be sure. You could argue that the great start he had on his call-up in 88 (a .961 OPS) was the worst thing that could have happened to him, as Met fans started expecting twenty years of that. As it was, he did have two great seasons in St. Louis, but everything else was pretty pedestrian. It's easy in hindsight, or at least it should be, to cut him some slack for being a kid that was mentally in way over his head.

He had his two AS seasons in StL - but still, 13 ML seasons with 1,600 hits including 450+ for XBs plus 200 SBs all by the age of 32 is a bit better than 'pedestrian'.

It was Darling? I've been under the impression that it was Randy Myers. Maybe my memory is failing me.

Myers was the one who hung the 'Are we really trying?' sign next to the lineup card one day.

I don't think it was the expectations that doomed him, any more than Strawberry. |

Jeffries was probably just a major buzzkill in that locker room.

He seems like a decent human being, and the hype/hot start doomed him from before day one.

Edgy DC Jan 30 2010 08:27 PM Re: Gregg Jefferies |
But plenty of overhyped guys don't get devoured. Some succeed wildly. Some never live up to the hype but still have lovely and satisfying careers. Everybody who hated on him because they overspeculated on his rookie card when they were 14 deserved what they got. But the hate doesn't and didn't have to win the day.

Let me stipulate for the record that my comment above was not intended, nor should it be taken as a condoning of weenie-devouring in any other context than a ballpark, Coney Island or any other haven of backyard relaxation/competitive eating.

I don't think it was the hype or the hot start that did him in. I think it was immaturity; he became a "star" before he was ready.
