Haiti

This is Fr. Arsene Jasmine (to the left), a priest in my parish and a friend, posing about a month and a half ago with Sean Cardinal O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston, in the Capuchin robe. Fr. Jasmine left Monday for a retreat in Port Au Prince and we haven't heard back from him. The Archbishop of Port Au Prince is reported dead and we have reason to believe he was with him. According to reports, in fact, pretty much every church and seminary in the city is collapsed. The country scarcely even has firetrucks.

Re: Haiti

Hopefully, your friend is safe and busy giving aid and comfort to the devastated people of Haiti. I will keep him and the people of Haiti in my prayers.

Thanks. I really hope so. I can't recall ever seeing so much as a bad look from this guy.

Re: Haiti

A friend of mine posted on Facebook that his sister works for Americares, a four-star Charity Navigator charity with the following mission statement:
Founded in 1982, AmeriCares is an international relief organization whose passion to help is matched by an ability to deliver. Whether it's an epic disaster or a daily struggle, AmeriCares goes to extraordinary lengths to ensure that medicines, medical supplies and aid reaches individuals in need wherever they are, whenever they need it. In a quarter of a century, we have delivered more than $8 billion of aid to 137 countries. For more than two decades, the success of AmeriCares has been characterized by timely response, meaningful impact, high integrity and intense passion for the work. To deliver medicine, relief supplies and health care to the needy, AmeriCares has developed a platform based on strategic partnerships, high-efficiency and tight auditing procedures.
They're accepting donations for Haiti relief at http://www.americares.org/ [quote="Americares"]AmeriCares is preparing to respond to a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti earlier today. The earthquake leveled a hospital in the Haitian capital city of Port-au-Prince. Official casualty reports are being developed, but witnesses near the disaster could hear screams of people trapped inside the hospital. AmeriCares has pledged $5 million worth of aid for the people of Haiti. Help Support AmeriCares >> AmeriCares is working with partners on the ground to deliver humanitarian aid and disaster relief. Many local partners are reporting it is difficult to reach staff on the ground near the epicenter of the earthquake. In December, AmeriCares sent an aid delivery to Haiti of critical medicines and medical supplies to fight serious infections, burns and skin infection and surgical supplies. AmeriCares has been providing humanitarian aid to Haiti since 1984, partnering with local health care organizations throughout the country. We've delivered more that $145 million worth of medical aid and humanitarian relief to Haiti. AmeriCares helps partners serve more patients and avoid running out of basic medicines and medical supplies with regular shipments throughout the year. For over 25 years, AmeriCares has responded with emergency relief and lifesaving aid to catastrophic disasters around the world that have affected millions of families: from floods in India, the Tsunami in Southeast Asia, to earthquakes in China and Peru, and deadly cholera outbreaks in Zimbabwe. Your gift to the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund will help with our lifesaving response to this deadly disaster.

Re: Haiti

Another excellent Four Star Charity Navigator charity with a Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund is the American Jewish World Service.

Well, we've heard from one of our guys. He's alive --- and overwhelmed, naturally. Arsene is still missing.

Me, personally, just Arsene and Andre. Andre has checked in. But we have a large Haitian community here with many worries.

That's great news Edgy. Two of my co-workers have family they haven't heard from yet. One had 7 relatives who were missing, and just came in this morning saying she has heard from all but one.

Happy Friday

Re: Haiti

That's really kind of you. It likely won't shock any of you, but these priests I work with tend to piss me off as much as anybody else. I'd like to think St. Francis got the holy ones, but they're human, and sometimes too much so. Plus, as their numbers and resources shrink, they have to make painful lose-lose decisions every day. You can't make those decisions and not hate yourself a little. Fr. Jasmine (a non-Franciscan), though highly educated, still leaves the impression of a holy innocent. He's sort of the sweet sensitive little brother who redeems the rest of the cynical family. Losing him would have crushed them all.
