I know three people who voted for him, a year or so ago they'd laugh in my face if I told them there would be a Republican leader in The Commonwealth. The only hold out is a union official, he's like gotta vote with the union or they change the secret handshake for the fifty cent drafts in the back room.

Re: Mass Senate Race

You got to love the process at work here , saw in the paper today that the last time a republican won this seat was 1946...Ted Williams hit .342 that year to lead Boston the the WS....."it's a wonderful life" was the top movie....nothing guaranteed in politics.

well the seat was held for 45+ years by a guy who could have ran on the Communist Baby-Eating Martians ticket and still kept winning because he was personally liked so I'm not sure how much that says about MA, they HAVE had Republican governors recently. Its still a very liberal state and a big victory, when will it be up for election again? 2012 or 14?

2012 - that's when EMK's term would have been up

Odds have to be better than 50-50 that the person running to take that seat back for the Democrats in 2012 will be named Kennedy, right?

I like to think this is cosmic payback against those who changed the rules and installed care-takers for the seat whenever it suited their purpose in order to continue to hold onto it as some sort of divine right ... although I suspect there are some other factors involved.

Re: Mass Senate Race

Tuesday's election might be the best thing to happen to Obama. The health care bill the way it turned out was a fiasco. The Dems have no one to blame but themselves. The union exemptions, the shady deals for Nebraska and Louisiana, the closed-door meetings, 2,000-page bills rushed through before they could be read -- and by shutting out the GOP the Dems had nowhere to cast blame. This gives Obama the opportunity to say, "Folks, we stumbled. We let you down. We'll scrap these bills and start fresh. I'm calling for a bipartisan panel to work on this issue, because it's too important to let die. There will be compromise and the openness that I promised would be there. In the end we will produce something that both sides can live with and can stand behind." He might have to wait until next year to see how the midterms shake out. Reid will probably be gone, which, frankly, would help Obama, too. But a plan that comes from the center and allows each side to claim some victories would allow Obama to claim a signature, landmark piece of legislation and set him up for 2012. Just my thoughts.

That sounds great. Unfortunately, the Democrats are likely to follow the same formula that they've been following the past 30 years: shift further rightward, cave in to Republican demands and cater to corporate & militarist interests. After they've thoroughly stabbed their progressive constituency in the back, they'll start campaigning for the next elections by telling them "you owe us your vote, you don't want the Republicans to win do you?" Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

A person named Kennedy ran in this election. Meanwhile, the name Coakley is becoming a metaphor for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. As in, "With a seven-game lead on September 12, the 2007 Mets were a lock to repeat as NL East Champions, but then they Coakleyed by losing 12 of their final 17 games."

Re: Mass Senate Race

Tempting as it is to view the vote in MA as a referendum on national health-care reform... since MA's got pretty damn progressive state health care, I can't see it that way. (Perhaps that-- as well as running Coakley-- was the Democrats' error in the state.) That the state elected a Republican isn't the surprise-- hell, it's just coming off of a Romney governorship, no? It's that it's THIS Republican, who just seems-- from the State Senate voting record-- like a medium-to-far-right party-line hack. How the hell voters bought his brand of "independent" leadership is something Coakley's going to be asking herself a LOT over the next few years.

Now for the really important question generated by last night's race ... how do I meet either or both of Sen. Brown's daughters?

Sort of? I'm pretty sure I've been there-- if memory serves, Thursdays are 2-for-1 dance nights at "Circles"-- if you don't like their dancers, you're not right-thinkin'! From a campaign ad: God, how did I get here?

This begs the question: "Why is a good married man like Edgy looking at the websites of exotic dancers?"
