Should I stay or should I go? Apparently UN headquarters in NYC will need $1.5 TRILLION in repairs to the aging facility. Supposedly asbestos, a leaking roof, and a faint smell of curry have the place in disarray and the honchos looking at alternatives. Dubai: The government of Dubai on Thursday announced that it is fully prepared to host the headquarters of the United Nations if its officials decide to move from New York where the organisation is currently located. According to an official source in the Dubai government, the announcement was made in light of the UAE's — and Dubai's — appreciation of the vital role the United Nations plays in all areas, and in the protection of international peace and security and economic development in particular. The source said Dubai welcomes dialogue with UN officials to provide them with full information on the capabilities which the emirate can provide and which could make it the optimal choice as the new seat of the UN headquarters if a final decision is taken to move out of New York. Among the capabilities which Dubai possesses are suitable geographical location and world-class infrastructure and air, land and sea transport systems which make the emirate an easily accessible meeting point in the middle of the world, noted the source.

Even though they don't pay parking tickets, the various consulates and people that live and work here because of the UN do help pay the bills. I would rather they not move. More construction jobs for New Yorkers and fewer for the foreign slaves that they bring into Dubai.

I find it hard to believe that the figure is $1.5 trillion.

According to this, $1.88B. My Big ass T mistake. http://www.un.org/Pubs/chronicle/2006/w ... /ga/5f.htm

Re: What do the Clash and the United Nations have in common?

B, T ... the government throws them recklessly around so why can't we here? I didn't even realize the magnitude of the number until I thought about it after I posted. For example, the GNP of Spain in 2008 wasn't even 1.5 trillion ... it was a measly 1.42. I took yes, btw ... mostly for NYC sentimental reasons. Dubai would be very strange choice for so many reasons I wouldn't know where to start.

I vaguely recall some scuttlebutt after the fall of communism that the UN had been offered some prime real estate in Berlin (?) in an efort to enticce a relocation. They should move it to SF (where it was founded) and let it help bail CA out (state unemployment at 12.5%)

If anyone can find a way to turn a repair job into $1.88 B dollars it's the UN

I don't celebrate any further decline in our international standing.

I remember Rudy wanting to get rid of the UN when he was mayor. The UN should stay in NYC, it needs to be in great city and I agree with what Edgy says. Dubai is so last decade already.

Re: What do the Clash and the United Nations have in common?

For both sentimental reasons-- I attended the UN International Playgroup, and the School for a spell, as a kid-- and the problematic symbolism of housing a peacekeeping organization devoted to the promotion and protection of human rights in a non-democracy that passively countenances the abuse of its non-citizens' rights, I'd rather it stayed.

considering what really goes on at the UN it would be a very appropriate location.

What do the Clash and the United Nations have in common? They're so bored with the USA.
