Minor league hockey

Took Fboy to see the Syracuse Crunch tonight, our local AHL team. Sat four rows up from the rink and had a great time.

How many fights?

Three or four fights... none prolonged though. Unlike the NHL, in this league the referees actually try to stop the fights as soon as they start.

Really? The AHL used to be the fight league. They must have cracked down.

I remember a phenomenal Rochester-Syracuse game several years ago where there were so many fights that the Crunch had only two or three guys left on the bench at the end of the game. Good times.

I miss the Long Island Ducks - the hockey version. If Paul Newman's character in 'Slapshot' wasn't based on former Ducks player/coach John Brophy I'd be very surprised.

That'd make more sense than "Al the Ice Gorilla." Not sure what it is that a gorilla crunches, exactly, but whatevs. They did their part to reach out and make it a fun for the whole family type experience. For Fboy, there was a giant gorilla mascot to high-five him, a dad who would buy him a souvenier hockey puck, and even seeing himself on the Jumbotron during the "Smile Cam." For Fman, we had hoochie mama style "Crunch girl" dancers and really tall cold beers. Win/win.

I understood it was based on former Ranger Reggie Fleming.
