Apparently I'm now a celebrity....

...at least in the eyes of the Grand Rapids Griffins hockey team. The Red Wings minor-league affiliate is very active in the community here, and is planning a Great Skate marathon. All the players are skating in shifts and collecting pledges. The team invited folks to be "celebrity skaters" and I'm listed in the "media personality" category.

I had to promise not to check the television personalities into the boards.

If you'd like to donate, there's a link below. It's worth a click to see me in my sweet game-used New Haven Nighthawk jersey and my old street hockey gear!

You're the only one listed under celebrities.

I was the first one to get my page together. Or so I've been told.

Hmmm. Wait a second! Maybe I'm going to be the one getting checked -- by the players. A trap!

Re: Apparently I'm now a celebrity....

Not-dead Detroit-area celebrities I can think of:

Iggy Pop
The MC5
A lot of people named Ford
A profoundly corrupt ex-mayor
Berry Gordy
Seger
Nugent
Ellen Burstyn (not dead, but a little too old to check)
Tom Skerritt
Pat St. John
The White Stripes
Smokey Robinson
The Temps (what's left of them)
The Supremes
Was Not Was
Stevie Wonder
Frank Tanana

MC5:
Rob Tyner, lead vocals (dead)
Fred "Sonic" Smith, lead and rhythm guitar (dead)
Wayne Kramer, lead and rhythm guitar (alive after 20-odd years of drug problems)
Michael Davis, bass guitar (alive after spending much time in jail and drug rehab)
Dennis Thompson, drums (alive)

Two dead, two alive after difficult lives. My guess is that Dennis Thompson would be the most likely celebrity to be invited to the hockey game.

Guys! Detroit's on the other side of the state. And we try to avoid it at all costs.

From Grand Rapids, we have:

One of the Twlight people. Taylor something. He's big now.
Anthony Kleidis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers
Kevin Max from DC Talk
Chad Curtis
Nate McLouth
Dave Rozema
Agent Scully from X Files
Gerald Ford's kids

I don't know if they skate much.

Alice Cooper.

(Although he's become more of an Arizona guy.)

Re: Apparently I'm now a celebrity....

Floyd Mayweather, the boxer, is from here and I've met him at school events a couple times. Not good on skates.
Gray Hogeboom
Brent Gates
Phil Regan
Wally Pipp's son recently passed away, forever upholding his Dad's good name.
A McDonald's in one of the suburbs keeps the memory of Del Shannon from being a runaway.
The Rev. Al Green
Former marlins owner Wayne Huizenga
Andy Richter's a little busy, though not for much longer apparently
Johnny Benson is driving in a circle somewhere.

The list of available folks quickly narrows down to a newspaper education writer/baseball blogger/Mets fan.

All of whom don't add up to Iggy Pop on a bad day.

Re: Apparently I'm now a celebrity....

Amazingly, with just a couple days to go, I'm in third place in terms of most money raised so far -- which says more about the other "celebs" than my abilities. [url]http://www.firstgiving.com/davemurray

But the local FOX morning crew has thrown down the challenge as a late entry. Maybe they'll want to drop the gloves.

Using Edgy's suggestion about better available celebs, I had some fun blogging about this...[url]http://metsguyinmichigan.blogspot.com/

My son, of course, is horrified by this, though not as much as when I was invited to speak to his class about writing. He's bringing his new girlfriend to the event, and I suspect he'll pretend he doesn't know me.
