ASG, MMXIII

Buried in the rumors that the then-named Miami Marlins will play host to the All-Star Game in 2015, I came across this nugget:

The New York Mets will apparently play host in 2013 with an A.L. city getting the nod in 2012 and 2014.

The last time the Mets hosted the All-Star Game, of course, was in 1964. I, for one, would love to see the game played on home soil.

It would be nice , pretty sure that 2013 has been an unofficial date for the Mets since before Citi was built. It might have got promised to them when it was announced that MFYII would host 2008 AS Game.

In theory, yes, it'd be a nice thing to have at home but the All-Star game is so inaccessible to the regular fan (priced even more steeply than World Series tickets and with ~10,000 or more tickets held back for MLB) that it doesn't wind up making a huge difference where it is held.

The place will be packed to the rafters with Yankee fans.

PACKED!

Re: ASG, MMXIII

I was unable to get a ticket when the game was in Detroit a few years ago, and I really tried, because I LOVE the All-Star Game. But I had fun with all the side activities, such as the FanFest, and I was outside the stadium as the game was started to check out the festivities.

It's good to have, if nothing else it's nice attention paid to the team and the stadium.

Having the ASG at CF will give Fred Wilpon an excuse to celebrate the history of NL baseball in New York instead of just celebrating the Mets history.

Will the game sell-out in Florida? I'm biased, but DC should get it before Miami. Now, DC won't have it until 2017 at the earliest.

Some of it anyway.

What I heard is that DC isn't getting the ASG until the neighborhood around their stadium becomes more attractive.
As it is in most stadium deals, area improvement is one of those promises that rarely occurs upon construction.

I suppose they need to get the surrounding area to be at least as nice as the area adjacent to Citi Field.

Re: ASG, MMXIII

If I recall, the Marlins were supposed to get the 2000 game, but when Huizenga gutted then sold the team, Selig yanked it away and gave it to the Braves.

On the bright side, Johan can start the game and applause can fall on him like soft rain, and Klap called for with Rivera in 2008.

And let me say that the area surrounding Comerica Park, while lacking chop shops, is no picture postcard.

Klap is prepared to prove you wrong three years down the line.

This Tuesday, the Mets get their chance to play the part of the Yankees and host the All-Star Game in New York City. It is the Midsummer Classic, and we know the word classic (much as with its root word "class") connotes Yankees and nothing else. Citi Field can only hope to distantly approach the majesty of Yankee Stadium in its final go-round in 2008. We know the Mets' humble boutique ballpark cannot match, let alone surpass it.

But there is one aspect of the All-Star Game through which Citi Field can make an indelible imprint on the sport the way the original cathedral in the Bronx did five Julys ago when Yankee Stadium graced baseball by simply being Yankee Stadium:

Have Mariano Rivera start for both teams.

We all know, World Series hosting rights notwithstanding, that the All-Star Game remains an exhibition. What better talent to exhibit than Mariano Rivera's? What better New York treasure to put on display for a national and international viewing audience? What better idenity to give an All-Star game hosted by the Mets than that of a Yankee legend?

Nothing instantly says New York City All-Star Game better than Mariano Rivera. He is, at once, a municipal and planetary treasure. This unprecedented gesture, to hand him the ball in the top of the first and then again in the bottom of the first will testify to baseball's awareness of his -- and the Yankees' -- status above the pantheon of athletic competition.

The Mets must do the right thing and withdraw their representative from the National League team to make room for the Great Rivera on the Senior Circuit roster. It would be unworthy of a team that plays so close to Yankee Stadium to do otherwise.

The long-range weather forecast is still uncertain for Tuesday night. MLB crosses its fingers for clear skies. But should baseball do the right thing and declare its all-world reliever who is still going strong at 43 starting pitcher for both the American and National leagues, the clearest element in the Citi Field atmosphere will be the presence of soft rain...and not just from the heavens giving their tearful approval to this most appropriate decision.

What makes that most excellent is paragraph three. He always sets his most insane proposals off as a sentence fragment with a paragraph all to their own, as if to say, "Let them choke on this one."

[quote="Astro Annie":1wec5ihf]I have seen the ASG on my home turf.

The "hometown boy" (from the area and on our team) who pitched for us barfed up six runs in the top of the first.

I hope it goes better for y'all.[/quote:1wec5ihf]

I hope it goes better too but that was still a pretty satisfying outcome.

Re: ASG, MMXIII

I had such a blast randomly winning SRO tickets to the Pittsburgh version and unsuccessfully trying to sell them for a profit and randomly going to the game that I think I may sell a kidney to attend one at Citi Field.

Of course, knowing how things go around here, the Yankees/Fox/MLB would somehow hi-jack it into a "OMG Jeter and Rivera are retiring their last ASG and it's at home (sorta)!" followed by panned shots of Yankee Stadium.

What's the CPF consensus -- was Piazza tipping Clemens' pitches?

I will always believe he was, just because I wish it so badly to be true.
