2010 CPF NL Only Fantasy Baseball Anyone?

I am in... really, you can do an NL only league with as few as 8 owners but 10-12 works best. I can set up a league at Yahoo if anyone else wants in.

Thoughts?

I'll play. The one I ran last year won't be back--not enough time with the baby here--so I'm glad someone else feels like having it!

I agree, I enjoy fantasy baseball, but I don't enjoy combing 5th starter possibilities and keeping up on which prospect the Pirates are starting that may get me a good performance or with 5th starter I ended up with that's gotten demoted to the bullpen.

gotta check the yahoo default, leagues go different ways on this...in some leagues you lose him, in some you keep him, in others you keep him but cant trade him, and in still others you get first crack at the guy he was traded for (multiplayer trades the guy with the highest priced or highest pick player leaving gets first choice of the guys coming back) reagardless of waiver priority.

any of these rules are fine by me, but make sure we know what we are doing before the draft.

Re: 2010 CPF NL Only Fantasy Baseball Anyone?

Last year was my first time doing NL-only, but IIRC, Yahoo defaulted to letting you keep the guy if he's already on your team, but you can't trade him or pick him back up if you drop him.

This is correct. You can continue to get stats from that player but if you cut him he disappears from the pool of eligible players.

Re: 2010 CPF NL Only Fantasy Baseball Anyone?

I'm goofing around with the rankings and stuff now. Without giving away any secrets, what I am trying to accomplish here and how is the best way to do it? Or do you people just go with what Yahoo provides you?

In other words, do I want my list to top position-players 1-8, or or just go by pure stats regardless of position? Will I have a chance to make my own picks at draft time or is that done for me?

Sorry for the dumb questions, as I said, first time, long time.

Re: 2010 CPF NL Only Fantasy Baseball Anyone?

JCL- you'll have the chance to make your own picks at draft time... yahoo's rankings are generally decent if you take into account that they are 1) heavily skewed toward last year's numbers and 2) don't get altered much to include injuries and expected playing time in the spring...so just use common sense to exclude guys that yahoo likes but you know are hurt or not starting.

as far as stats/positions you need to fill out the roster...some people would rather take the best player (lets say Pujols) while others would rather take Hanley Ramirez because of position scarcity, which is the the idea that Pujols + a crap SS later on won't be as good as Ramirez + a crap 1B, because the 10th best 1B will put up much better roto numbers than the 10th best SS. theres no right answer.

Re: 2010 CPF NL Only Fantasy Baseball Anyone?

It's good to make your own draft rankings as a reference, or at least know which players you think are worth grabbing ahead of their Yahoo ranking and which are worth avoiding. If for some reason you need to have the computer pick for you, you REALLY need to do your homework or you'll wind up with all the players everybody else thinks are overvalued, plus a few positional imbalances and guys who got injured after the rankings were made.

Wow, we're up to 11 now.

Fman99
Feb 22 2010 06:53 PM
Re: 2010 CPF NL Only Fantasy Baseball Anyone?

Agreed.

16 NL teams = 48 starting outfielders, 32 middle infielders and 32 corner infielders.

11 owners at 5 OFs = 55 OFs, 33 2B/SS and 33 1B/3B. Too many slots.

So I will change it to 4 OFs and one extra infielder (CI or MI) per active team. Still also a Util spot. This should be a bit easier to field a full squad.

Also the draft is now scheduled for Thursday, March 25th at 7:30 PM.

Feb 23 2010 08:29 PM
Re: 2010 CPF NL Only Fantasy Baseball Anyone?

What's wrong is that part time players suck ass.

Even with the pared down rosters, look at it like this:

16 NL teams x 8 positions = 128 position players

11 fantasy teams x 11 hitters per team (8 position players plus 1 extra IF, OF and UTIL) = 121 hitters

Letting the seven worst hitters in the NL off the hook is not exactly making it easy.

at least up the bench size from 3 to 5, this makes having the next useful player less a matter of being the first to click the waiver wire when player X gets named a starter and more a matter of planning.

I can do that. I think we should also try using the free agent blind bidding for waivers, which is a new Yahoo feature this year, instead of the generic "first come first served" method.

Re: 2010 CPF NL Only Fantasy Baseball Anyone?

I guess 7 pitches isn't that many that it should become a huge issues. I'm always a fan of no limits.

The case for limits is that one person could continually swap in pitchers and get a lot more innings and rack up more wins, etc. And I guess with only ER on the negative side that could be the case.

Lesse, 5 pitchers, at 200ip each would be 1000 innings, maybe 75 for the two relievers, so 1150. I guess 1250 does work okay, but I'd support bumping it up to 1400 or 1500 to support a 6th or 7th bench pitcher if that's the way someone chose to go.

whoever prudently saved their FA budget gets him.
or if there is a "tie" (two max bids) it goes to the player lower in the standings.

as for the innings limit, i think it should be high enough that even with the best innings eaters in the league you dont hit it, but you can just drop and replace starters 4 times a week. 1450 is fine since we have 3 dedicated reliever slots.

I've been a commish for my other league using Yahoo since 2002 so it's pretty intuitive for me. And a league where no money (prizes or entry fees) changes hands is all the easier for me, not having to shake down a bunch of deadbeats for their transaction dues.

Re: 2010 CPF NL Only Fantasy Baseball Anyone?

I'd say three hours if we work quickly, especially in the late rounds when the talent pool will be so thin that it will be one big crap shoot.

I've never been in this deep of a draft, so I don't have much advice to give. Maybe towards the end look for matching halves of a platoon -- the righthanded half will generally only have value to whomever takes the lefthanded half (unless it's somebody like Jonny Gomes, who'll produce well in the AB's he gets). I also wouldn't worry about your bench. If you need to fill a spot due to an injured player, most likely nobody will begrudge you picking up the guy who takes his place. There may be exceptions, though. For example, I'd expect that Alex Cora will only have value to the person who drafts Reyes (and that's assuming Reyes misses Opening Day), but if you grab Beltran you may not be able to wait till the end of the draft to grab Pagan.

It shouldn't take anywhere near 3 hours. Generally the time limit is 90 seconds per pick, but half of the people drafting will be ready to go within 5-7 seconds of coming on the clock. And the others will get mocked (by me at least) for taking the full time, given that this league is not for money and all....

I'd figure on being done by 9 PM EST.

As for hints, I throw this out there -- ESPN MLB depth charts, per team, will help you figure out who the starters are for every NL team as well as the top 5 candidates for the rotation and their top relievers.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/depth?team=ari

Pull down menu on the right to select the other NL teams. I copied those out onto a single spreadsheet and use it to find those guys late who will get a lot of at bats.

In a single league it's important to maximize those guys who are going to play, even if they are .240 scrubs, because much of the stats (especially hitting) are counting stats and those runs/HRs/RBIs/steals add up. Relievers will be around late, though in a 12 team NL only league you may want to seek out at least one closer with a track record.

Nymr83
Mar 25 2010 10:41 AM
Re: 2010 CPF NL Only Fantasy Baseball Anyone?

in a 12 team league i'd say you need one guy you can count on for saves and probably want a couple of guys who may get saves at some point this year. particularly useful are guys like Marmol and Lidge before they became closers because you knew that not only were they next in line but they'd strike out 90+ batters for you and not be useless until then.

Re: 2010 CPF NL Only Fantasy Baseball Anyone?

Yeah, there will be an NL-only player pool, so even auto-drafting will choose eligible players. No guarantee that they'll be good, or healthy, just eligible.

The bidding bucks works like this -- you get $1000 in play money to use all season. If you want a player that is on waivers (i.e., just added to Yahoo from the minors, or recently cut by another team), you bid as much of your money as you think the player is worth. It's blind bidding -- so you won't know if or how much any one else has bid for the same guy. At the end of the waiver period the highest bid gets the player.

The bidding bucks can also be used as part of a trade I believe.

Pitchers- Carpenter, Cain, Webb, Hoffman, Capps, Richard, Blanton, Padilla, Penny

I goofed on Vazquez seeing the name and forgetting the injury, that cost me the chance to grab Lindstrom or Morales both of whom should get some saves this year and almost made it to my next pick

It must have been a bit unnerving to use a computer as apposed to what you used twenty years ago, a pen and paper and an abacus?

Re: 2010 CPF NL Only Fantasy Baseball Anyone?

The draft was easy (and fun!) back then. We got beer and all gathered together for an auction-style draft. It was calculating the weekly stats by hand which was the pain in the ass.

Was out celebrating last night and didn't get to the draft. I've always had good luck with prerankings..but Iguess NL field is so slim..

ouch..eww...I've got Tatis, Sheffield, and Delgado. *shudder*

Oh, and Pedro and Dukes also, of the NA guys.

Yeah I saw you getting stiffed with those guys , although when you auto picked Delgado you were getting props in the chat section. We had a good turn out for the draft which I think made it fun. I think it would suck if only a few were able to make it.

Draft can be fun. They take too long sometimes though, can be a pain if you're in a lot.

Rookie mistake on my part I guess, not realizing how slim pickings would be. Still wish it wouldn't have some NAs so high.

I love my team... most of my hitters are solid even for a mixed league and I have some real upside at the ass end of my rotation. I'm a little worried about my batting average but I've got solid numbers coming otherwise.

Having done NL only before I prefer it, it's WAY harder than your 12 team mixed league vanilla league.

I proposed a Howard for Pujols trade with Nymr, haven't heard back yet.

Of course you did , I was only following up on the ridiculous articles that appeared last week regarding the Phillies brass having internal talks regarding such a move.
