Rex Ryan Gives Dolphin Fans The One in the Middle

This guy needs a Super Bowl to coach or something.
Rowdy Rex flips Miami fans the bird, could be fined By MARK CANNIZZARO Last Updated: 11:15 PM, January 31, 2010 Posted: 7:00 PM, January 31, 2010 MIAMI — Now the fat’s in the fire. Jet coach Rex Ryan, who started the season by challenging Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder to a fight, flipped off Miami fans at a mixed-martial-arts event he was attending in Sunrise, Fla., over the weekend. Ryan, in the Sunshine State for the Pro Bowl, was doing a ringside interview with a Showtime reporter piped through the arena. Through a raucous chorus of boos, he delivered one of his bold predictions: "I just want to tell everyone in Miami that we’re coming to beat you twice next year." That’s something Ryan’s Jets failed to do in 2009. They were beaten twice by the Dolphins. Later, as the arena emptied, he raised the middle finger of his right hand at several Dolphins fans while wearing a big smirk on his face. Yesterday, the larger than life coach, who is known to consume 7,000 calories a day, served himself a helping of crow. "It was stupid and inappropriate," Ryan said. "I wouldn’t accept that type of behavior from one of the coaches or players, and it’s unacceptable from me. I apologize to the Jets’ organization, the National Football League and NFL fans everywhere." Team General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said, "Rex showed extremely poor judgment, and his conduct was inappropriate. He knows he was wrong, has apologized and we have accepted his apology." The NFL said it would "look into" the possibility of fining Ryan. Tennessee Titans owner did the same thing to Buffalo Bills fans in November — and it cost him $250,000. David M. Hildenbrand, the Dolphin fan who took the picture — an instant Internet sensation — told The Post that Ryan "was walking by us after the event and a couple buddies of mine said some things like, ‘Dolphins rule, Jets suck.’" "[Ryan] looked at us and said, ‘Go f--- yourselves,’ and then he gave us the finger." When Ryan flipped the bird to the group, a bunch of fans started shouting things at him like, "Manning whupped you." "He was being a smart ass," Hildenbrand said. "That didn’t surprise me seeing the way he coaches and how he talks." This isn’t the first time Ryan has verbally grappled with the Dolphins and their fans. Last summer, during a Jets mini-camp, Ryan got into a row with Crowder that lasted days. It began with Crowder responding to Ryan’s bold talk during the off-season by saying that he’s "the OTA Super Bowl winner," referring to "off-season team activities." Ryan fired back: "I don’t know this Channing Crowder. All I know is that he’s all tatted up, so I guess I ought to be nervous about him." He also said if he were younger, "I’d probably handle him myself." Crowder’s response: "Oh, Lord have mercy. What’s wrong with him? I’d have beat the hell out of that big, old joker." Ryan has insisted the war of words was all in fun.

What does the man eat to get to 7,000 calories? Pure grease?

Front page of The Post today, and back page of the News. On network TV, if somebody gives "the finger" they pixelate it, but there it is in full display on the cover of a newspaper. Strange.

It's a strange world we live in, where doing potentially offensive things is a multi-million (billion?) dollar industry on one hand, and looking for things to be offended about is a competing industry. And as they compete with each other, they also feed each other. Business-wise, it's almost too brilliant.

[quote="Valadius":34kwqgd2]What does the man eat to get to 7,000 calories? Pure grease?[/quote:34kwqgd2] I understand when they hype big diets for athletes, like how many billions of calories Michael Phelps eats, but those guys also burn the calories, so it's generally healthy (not to mention the diet's a little more balanced) Anyone that looks at Rex knows he eats a lot, why was/is this ever news?

7000 calories a day, for a person who doesn't get heavy exercise, is enough to gain ten pounds per week.

And when you're talking about Ryan flipping them the bird, the comment about "one hand" was brilliant, too. Nicely done. Later

Really? I wonder if this guy is more of a douche than Ryan is. Yeah I know what's in my handle, but that's just because I've always like how the "j" looks in a byline or scripted out in a signature. I'm never introducing myself as "Steve J. Rogers," even if I'm giving a quote via an email exchange.

I could too. But gaining ten pounds per week isn't what I'm looking to do at the present time.

Re: Rex Ryan Gives Dolphin Fans The One in the Middle

Does anyone think Rex actually counts the calories he consumes? I know that 7K figure got quoted somewhere a week or so back and therefore is now not only accepted as fact but will be the way Ryan gets introduced in articles* over the next few years - probably until that point where he either goes on a diet or just explodes and takes out the nearest 20 people to him. Rex Ryan, the 7,000 calorie-per-day consuming head coach of the New York Jets, said today that he in no way meant to insult the ladies auxiliary when he called their spokeswoman a ... The NFL today fined NYJ head coach Rex Ryan for a drunken incident in a strip club at 4 AM Friday. Also, Grimmy, he's the son of former Eagles coach/Bears defensive schemer/feisty sideline puncher of colleagues Buddy Ryan. Upon hearing about his predilection for McDonald's when this 7K "story" first broke, Yahoo! Sports' Shutdown Corner blog took a shot at breaking down his possible daily diet:
Breakfast: 3 Egg McMuffins (900 calories) 2 Sausage Burritos (600 calories) 4 Hash Browns (600 calories) Lunch: Quarter Pounder w/Cheese (510 calories) McRib (500 calories) Large Fries (500 calories) 2 Hot Apple Pies (500 calories) Dinner: 2 Big Macs (1080 calories) 2 Filet-O-Fish Sandwiches (760 Calories) 10 piece Chicken McNuggets (460 calories) Large Fries (500 calories) Chocolate Chip Cookie (160 calories)

Re: Rex Ryan Gives Dolphin Fans The One in the Middle

There are probably a lot of Jets fans who have wanted to flip the bird to a group of Dolphins fans since the days of Dan Marino. But the key words in that sentence are "Jets fans". I don't think it is right for the coach to do it. We may have to start using the expression "Rex being Rex" if he keeps this stuff up. Later
