Storm of the Century (for Washington, at least)

Feb 05 2010 03:41 PM

We're expecting up to 30 inches of snow in Washington, DC. That would break the all-time record for a single snowstorm in this area, set in January 1922. Most people left work by or around 3 PM. Grocery stores are running out of bread, water, and milk as people stock up. By 8 PM, it's going to start coming down hard.

Re: Storm of the Century (for Washington, at least)

I understand runs on shovel and salt. But you gotta love the runs on dairy, bread and water. Do people really expect to be snowed in for more than a day or so? Or do they think that cabin fever increases one's toast-appetite by a factor of ten?

Re: Storm of the Century (for Washington, at least)

Washington's infrastructure is not built for snowstorms of any kind. Typically, anything over an inch results in people running around like chickens with their heads cut off. We don't have the snowplows and other equipment to adequately clear the roads after major snowstorms. After last December's storm, the roads weren't clear for days afterwards. And this storm may end up being about twice that. This winter as a whole so far has seen a snowfall approximately 3 times what we normally get. Dumping 30 more inches on us takes us up to around 6 times normal. It's absurd.

Re: Storm of the Century (for Washington, at least)

My Fairfax county living nieces & nephew have already had like 5 snow days off from school in the last six weeks - which is particularly a lot when you consider that all these storms have fallen on weekends.
Nature's way of laughing at Al Gore.
Notice that it's not being called 'global warming' anymore but the more inclusive 'climate change'. This way they cite colder weather, warmer weather, wetter weather, drier weather, increased storms, decreased storms as all signs of impending apocalypse.

Re: Storm of the Century (for Washington, at least)

I know about DC's snow removal plans. I spent time at Ft. Blevoir, about 17 Mi south of DC. The plan has two main parts: 1) wait for July. And if that is too far away, 2) call in the Army engineers from Ft. Belvoir. A funny sidelight. The reporter on one of the NY stations, who covers New Jersey (also supposed to be hard hit), reported that folks were shopping for milk, bread, sugar and eggs. Her comment "They must all be planning on making French Toast". Stay warm and dry, Edgy. Later

I fully endorse this storm and hope it can prevent the government from spending my money for a few more days. More likely they'll use my tax dollars to shovel the White House driveway at $500/hr with plastic spoons.

So right about now Dick Ebersol over at NBC Sports is wondering why this snow couldn't have happened next week; "... that damn CBS-aired Super Bowl would be over and with half the east coast paralyzed I'd have a captive audience with nothing else to do but watch the Olympics that I paid far too much money for"

26.5 inches here in Silver Spring, MD. Meanwhile, my son in Cambridge got nothing. And my parents, while expressing concerned, threw in the fact that it's 70 in Boynton Beach.

Re: Storm of the Century (for Washington, at least)

That's impressive. And by "impressive," I mean "pathetic." When a local DC paper runs a "NY vs. DC" article, transplanted New Yorkers like myself write in to say the rivalry is a non-starter, because people in New York are certainly not writing articles about any competition. DC wasn't even worth the comparison/contrast game. We weren't even on the map to them. Well, Representative Nudnick just put us on the map. YEAH!

Very little is sadder than some politician playing the "we're much tougher here" card (or nicer, or classier, or whatever) particularly when it's some no-name trying to get his/her name - somehow, someway - into the papers. On a related note, heard James Carville talking about how this week's New Orleans Super Bowl celebration didn't result in turned-over cars or street fires "like happens all the time in New York and Boston". Not that I'm sure he could actually cite any incidences of what he's claiming and I know he doesn't want to compare crime statistics with either city, but he was so intent on making the point that he closed the rather short interview by repeating himself just in case no one heard him the first time and offered up his city as an example of what those thugs in the northeast could be if we only were more like them.
