Name the musician...

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Feb 15 2010 09:09 AM

Here's the quote:
Why isn’t this monumental hitmaker getting more respect from his peers? Specifically, they point out that he’s never been elected to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. That’s something that bewilders me as well – if you consider all the big ’70s and ’80s rock acts already in there (Bob Seger, Tom Petty, Abba, Madonna, et al) and how, at the time, _________ was just as important (if not more) in terms of defining the sound of his era. Unfortunately, thanks to ["redacted song title"] and ["redacted song title"], ________ gets thought of as a lightweight – nothing more than a novelty act, which tends to disguise what a master guitarist he is. Or how successfully he brought synthesizers into the mainstream. Or how he – in a different way than Led Zeppelin – reimagined blues licks and turned them into classic rock and roll.
Can you fill in the blanks above? Answer revealed in an interesting 2 part retrospective at this below address.... (editing for sucking at html 11 years later) Would you support the candidacy? [url]http://popdose.com/the-popdose-guide-to-the-steve-miller-band-part-1/

Re: Name the musician...

He's got 3 #1 songs, but I don't think his overall body of work matches up with even Seger or ABBA. He is levels below Petty and Madonna in terms of success and influence. Miller only has 19 songs that reached the US Billboard Top 100. That means one disc of greatest hits isn't missing anything. Personally, I think he is a joker.

Re: Name the musician...

I imagine a reconstitued Wings with him replacing Jimmy McCulloch would be a good last hurrah for him and McCartney. (And why is McCartney in as a solo act but not Wings, huh?) Who is this?
In 1986, Time magazine called David Byrne “Rock’s Renaissance Man”. As much as Byrne’s music and songs are enticing and enjoyable (especially his tenure with Talking Heads), the term “Rock’s Renaissance Man” might have been better suited to ____________. Apart from being a sought-after record producer, despite his prolific output, what _______ lacked is a string of (pop/rock) hits. Being recognised for "______________" is one thing, but that hardly tells the whole ______________ story. Starting with simple (or classic) pop, ________ has delved into power pop (long before the genre became respectable); Philly soul; the bossa-nova; progressive rock; gone experimental (recording live albums by telling the audience to be silent!); took on electronica and ventured into interactive technology and music videos. Instead of being hailed by the masses, ________ developed a cult following with both fans and critics acknowledging _________ (____) and __________ (____) as _______’s key albums.

Rundgren. He's a joker, too. At least they play his song at many football arenas after a touchdown is scored.

My 17-year-old loves "Jet Airliner." Steve Miller strikes me as one of those guys where people like a lot of his songs, but you don't hear of too many people declare themselves big Steve Miller fans. I don't think I've ever seen anyone in a Steve Miller T-shirt, not that that's the bees all. I like "Hearts like a Wheel," which was a bitch to find on CD.

Nope. Hint - You know the song, but it is not one of the first several to come to mind when you think of Bob Seger. In fact, it is not even included on his Greatest Hits album released in 1994, even though the song was released well before 1994. It did appear on Greatest Hits II in 2003.

Fire Lake. I think there was a lot of Eagles involvement in that song. Without the hint, I probably would have guessed Against the Wind.

Re: Name the musician...

Nope. Fire Lake only made it to #6...but it did feature Frey and other Eagles on backing vocals. Against the Wind is wrong as well. Hint 4 - The movie that this song was made for was a sequel. Glenn Frey had a hit that was featured in the original movie, which is presumably why he was slated to sing the song from the sequel.

Re: Name the musician...

And while we wait for somebody to smack that one off the tee, name this musician:
(Musician) was poised to join the (tour theme) Here & Now tour in January 2002, but was unable to do so after he was charged with throwing a car alternator through a pub window and then threatening patrons with an imitation firearm. When (Musician)showed up, some of the pub patrons made fun of his appearance and told him that the man he was looking for was not present. (Musician) angrily told them he would be back before storming off and finding the car alternator in the street. (Musician) was brought to court at Old Bailey. The charges against him (which included criminal damage and threatening members of the public) were reduced to a single count of causing affray, to which he pleaded guilty. He was fined £500 and ordered to psychiatric care with a suspended sentence. In June 2003, (Musician) was arrested again by police after a conflict with a neighbour resulted in his attempting to smash the neighbour's patio door in with a shovel and then lying down on the concrete floor of a cafe basement with his trousers pulled down, curled up and trying to sleep. Once again he was charged with affray and criminal damage and spent time in psychiatric wards. In September of that year, he was sectioned under the Mental Health Act 1983 and spent a further six months of in-patient psychiatric care. He was eventually granted a conditional discharge by the judge at Highbury Magistrates Court.

I liked "Shakedown," but I remember thinking, "This doesn't sound like a Bob Seger song at all." It's a little in that realm of Chuck Berry's only No. 1 single being "My Ding-A-Ling".

Steve Miller? His claim to greatness ended with Rock Love. His first five albums are good ones, but after that, he did nothing worth listening to. Now, "Space Cowboy," "Living in the USA," "Your Saving Grace," showed some great talent, but his later work was pure crapola.

It's not like I am out to change anyone's mind, but the point sort of for the post and especially the linked article was to prompt a reconsideration, as Miller to me seems one of those artists who've people made their minds up on ages and ages ago. I dunno. I don't need my mind changed to enjoy confronting some old opinions every now and then. Edgy's whodunnit was either the Gallaher brother from Oasis or Boy George

Re: Name the musician...

Seger music was inescapable here in Michigan wen we first moved to the state in 1990 -- especially since we lived on the Detroit side. (Grand Rapids has a bit of a Chicago lean, and a certain resentment toward Detroit) It seemed like whenever we turned on a radio, he was there -- no matter for format. I swear the all-talk stations seemed to take a Seger break! Got to the point where we'd yell "NO!" in unison when he came on. That said, the music writers at both papers I've worked with here say he's a nice guy to deal with.

In fact, it wasn't until recently that I went back and reconsidered his good stuff; I had forgotten how good his early music was because all you heard was the crap. I don't mind reconsidering, but when I hear the stolen riff in "Rock 'N Me," it shows me just how badly he had fallen.
