I love a good corn muffin. When I'm feeling more "exotic" lemon poppy is also good.

Don't ever buy a shrink-wrapped muffin at an airport or convenience store, by the way, without looking at the calorie count. Some of those boys have as much as 1200 calories -- more than half of what you should have in a full day.

The good thing about using Al Gore in that context is that whether the question is asked about which dead guy you'd bring back to improve the world or if it's phrased as to which live guy you'd like to off so that the world would be a better place, 'Al Gore' would frequently be the answer either way.

I was about 16 or 17, and I won a bet with my dad's friend Tony on the Super Bowl - loser buys the winner a Tall in the Saddle from Jahn's Ice Cream Parlor in Richmond Hill. It was essentially a flower vase full of ice cream and toppings. Well, the two families went out to an old coal oven pizza place in Brooklyn one Saturday night and I ate a lot. We went to Jahn's for dessert and Tony insisted that he was paying up right then and there, and if I didn't finish it, I had to pay for it. I ate the whole damn thing, and most of that evening's repast ended up in the weeds behind the RKO Keith's Theater.

Religious trinkets/statuary and tank tops with slogans like "Trust Me-- I'm a Doctor" on them (not intended as a white-elephant gift, either) are close. Not a band as such, but the first music concert I saw was B.B. King when I was 15. Front row of the Ulster Performing Arts Center (UPAC) balcony with a great view. This was in the late 1980's back when B.B. still stood up for his performances. He was superb, also Joe Louis Walker who opened for him and also played fantastic guitar blues.

The first band that I saw was the Kinks, a few months after that. Also good.

Why should I give a flying fig about soccer?

Re: Answer/Ask

Fman99 wrote:
Why should I give a flying fig about soccer?

I don't think most Americal sports fans do. (And maybe this can be spun off as its own thread)

I don't think soccer appeals to any fan of the "big 4" American sports (baseball, football, basketball or hockey).
And that is at the most elemental, visceral, level.
Sportswriter Dick Young wrote the oft quoted line "A 0 - 0 tie. The score that made soccer famous". But I don't think its the lack of scoring that bothers American fans. Its deeper than that. It is what the rest of the world perceives as the strength of the game- the continual action with no stoppages.

Let me explain.
No matter which sport may be your favorite, all Americans share the second favorite "sport". Whether watching the game alone, with friends or at a local watering hole, All American sports fans like to second-guess the coach.

In hockey (line changes and when to pull the goalie), basketball (plays called during timeouts, man-to-man or zone, etc.), football (pass or run, what play, blitz or not, etc.) and Baseball (every pitch call, hit and run or not, aligning the defense, bunt, etc., etc.) there are moments where the coach must make a decision. Sometimes it works. And when it doesn't, it is the fodder of "shudda', woulda', coulda'" discussions among American sports fans for years to come.

Soccer doesn't provide those coaching decisions that can be second guessed.

So, I guess you can say that interest in soccer among American sports fans is ..... nil.

Now that's just not true. In-game, there's less opportunity for extended, replay-driven analysis, but... well... cripes, this just isn't so. (Ask an involved British fan about Capello's "hiding" his final goalkeeper choice from his team before the WC, or not making any real adjustment to his attack once he saw how well the Americans were blanketing Rooney, or stubbornly starting Gerrard and Lampard together despite the fact that-- as gifted as they are-- it's a bit like starting two shortstops and skipping third base.)

Why should I give a flying fig about soccer?

Because its rules are simple and its intracies endless; because most of the world's finest athletes in other countries end up in it, so you're missing out on some cool humans-out-excelling-other-humans stuff; and, maybe most of all, because knowing the game-- at least at the international level-- allows you to talk a lot more shit about other countries, only with justification.

I pay more than passing attention to all 4 biggies, with basketball probably edging out hockey for the bronze in the race for my attention.

But I care about the ball-and-stick and the gridiron, insofar as I will follow the ins-and-outs of these sports even when a game isn't necessarily in front of me.

Q: Can you describe your "kiss me" face for us, please?

Having never kissed myself, and only rarely practiced in front of a reflective surface... um, I dunno. But it's been described as "smirky". Also, I've got a jaw that sorta protrudes, so... "smirky lanternfish?"

Driving across the country in '98. I had read about a barbecue place in Murphysboro, Illinois that was supposed to be the bomb. I got to St. Louis and hung a right to get to Murphysboro 'cause it looked close on the map. What the map didn't tell me was that it was a two-lane road with almost no lighting. Drove for hours to get there just before they closed, around 9:30. I was way hungry and it was good but given that the next morning I was in hellacious traffic that I might have avoided the whole escapade probably added 8 hours to my trip. Good times.

Re: Answer/Ask

Although I suppose I'll have to-- what with the Disney pilgrimage looming somewhere in the murky future-- I'm okay with never being in the state of Florida ever. Hell, I'm okay with perforating the humid, culture-less, backwards land-polyp at the state line and letting it drift until it kisses Cuba.

I'll say David Wright, but really any young star, as a Met, in his 20's. At one point it was Doc/Straw.

Looking for a parent to chime in... what's a good way to convince my daughter that her bed is way awesomer than the one my wife is in, knowing that it's an outright lie and all?

Re: Answer/Ask

Why, more attractive, of course.

Also, blonde hair makes a woman look more attractive.

And blue sweatshirts make a woman look more attractive.

And a digital SLR camera on the right shoulder? Nothing more attractive than that.

I wouldn't dare say otherwise.

Cold enough for you? Explain and elaborate.

Re: Answer/Ask

Yes, it's cold enough for me. I wouldn't want it any colder really, as this is the perfect temperature for snow, which I like. more snow please. I definitely prefer it a little chilly to it being too warm.

If you could have one thing for dinner tonight, location/price/availability/calories/physics being no object, what would you eat?

B-complex, C, and absurd amounts of fluid and sleep. (Do people have home remedies these days? Like, poultices or salves?)

What's the last time you felt guilty about a joke you made?

That time I called you a threadkiller.

No... I dunno. It does seems like I get in a lotta trouble around the house for making remarks that are, you know, inappropriate for kids or whatever.

Who does your hair? When was your last appt?

Portions of it keep popping up during different cleaning excursions in my mom's house. The mixes-- especially ones for/from other people-- are the most... um... instructive.

What's the last blood-angrying fight you got into?
