Corporate Sellout of the Week

Lou Fuckin' Reed, who first sold out to Honda back in 1984, cashes in again 26 years later. And his sellout debut, save for posterity.

Guess I don't have much of a problem. Artists need to eat, too, and it's not like Lou is selling too many CDs these days.

Not to mention that Reed sold out the day he signed his first record contract.

I'll bite......why is that Sevie? For me at least I don't think this is a big deal as I thought it was in the early nineties, when IIRC it seemed to be a bigger deal to a lot of people.

It's just a joke, Steve. But if you don't see the difference between selling the music you create, and using the music you created for other purposes 30+ years ago to sell long-distance communications service, well, I'd rather not have a six page exchange about it that includes maddening non sequitur references to Bruce Boisclair, Elvis Costello's porkpie hat, and the Synod of Whitby.

Re: Corporate Sellout of the Week

Several December 31's ago, my brother-in-law, who does not follow popular music at all but considers himself an expert on lefty hypocrisy, took issue when I mentioned Green Day, which was at that moment selling out on some corporate-owned network's New Year's Eve special, was considered (or labeled) punk. I only mentioned it to fill a void in the conversation and because when he was younger, he might have heard of punk rock. His response: "Do they only play their songs on street corners? Do they only promote themselves by handing out mimeographed flyers? Because if they get paid by a record company, they're not punk." I went back to enjoying the song and gave up on the void.

Re: Corporate Sellout of the Week

What strikes me about it isn't the selling. It's that what they're selling doesn't match the music's theme in any way, shape or form. How exactly a paean to heroin (or to a romantic, daylong moment of clarity in the throes of an everlong addiction, depending on your reading) works to sell athletic purity/prowess, I don't know... and they use a particularly mournful part of the lyrics, too. It's a deeply odd, discomfiting juxtaposition for me... and, y'know, anyone who understands English, I'd imagine.

Comment on the video FORTEALLOY (9 hours ago) This ad is as awesome as Gretchen's riding style - outta this world. Kudos? to ATT! Yes , ATT you are the best. To LWFS point.... The ad that uses Lust For Life is a great example of that......

More to the ad industry's concern, I guess, is that both songs were later used in Trainspotting, and the Trainspotting demographic is the one whose dough they want.

But I'm smack* in the middle of the Trainspotting demo, muthaf*cka! *Pun intended, but in an uplifting, positive way utterly divorced from its original meaning. With added B-complex and taurine!

Everybody knows that Bruce Boisclair tried to buy he rights to Elvis Costello's "Oliver's Army" with plans on donating them to the Synod, but was blocked because the guys on Mike and Mike already bought the rights to play in the background of their ads played at Yankee Stadium, which isn't really a bad place. Surprised Edgy didn't know all this.

Just funnin', Steve :)
