Re: METTLE THE MULE!

I don't know the whole history of Mettle off the top of my head, but I would absolutely buy a plush Mettle.

Honor the history, Jeff!

Never saw this before , the Mets sure did some quirky things over the years. What did Mettle do?

Re: METTLE THE MULE!

AWESOME!!!

You need to remember Mettle to show that as bad as it is, it's a lot better than it was!

Oy -- Mettle did...let's let Jack Lang, in The New York Mets: Twenty-Five Years of Baseball Magic tell it:

The De Roulets had no conception of how to run a ball club. Instead they tried cute little gimmicks to lure the fans back. One they particularly liked was adopting as mascot the mule that had been presented to "Mummy" (as they always called their mother) by a Long Island neighbor. The mule's name was Arthur, but since Arthur Richman was the public relations director, they thought it wise to give the animal another name. A contest was held and "Mettle" selected as the winning entry. The De Roulets said it combined the club name with the spirit of the team.

The mule was housed in a stall beneath the stands behind home plate. The grounds keepers, who had their quarters nearby, complained of the stench. Before every home game, Bebe de Roulet propped herself in a little sulky behind the mule and took a fast trip around the Shea Stadium warning track. She thought it was cute. What other people thought and said is better left unwritten.

Yes, that was one of the proposed names.

Re: METTLE THE MULE!

Getting meadowlarks or planes to pull a seatcart around the infield might have proved trickier.

The Driver..a member of the groundscrew
