MLB Network 2010 Thread

If ya get a chance, the Prime 9 show on MLB Network does the broadcasters and it's a fun half hour show. They show these a lot, I just happened to tune in this morning. For the most part, I agree with the list except for Scooter. He was a fucking huckleberry and Murph was certainly better than him in just about every department. 9-Curt Gowdy 8-Phil Rizzuto 7-Harry Caray 6-Harry Kalas 5-Ernie Harwell 4-Jack Buck 3-Red Barber 2-Mel Allen 1-Vin Scully (I looked for a MLB Network thread and couldn't find it. If any- one sees one lmk and I'll move this)

I'm watching the NL Plays of the Year now. Muffy's flip play was the awarded the best by a 1Bman last year. I always swelled with pride when Met highlights made it to twib as a kid.

I can almost hear the music from TWIB with Mel Allen...We had that and the Sporting News and the local paper back in the before time. I think I like those days better than the Baseball Tonight era, rotoworld etc. BBR is great but you can take the MacMillans to the toilet

Rizzuto on that list is absurd. He's the only ex-player/non-professional there and simply being the quirky/funny guy that the home town folks tend to love shouldn't put him in the same conversation with the rest of that crew much less as part of a top ten list. Then throw in that most (if not all) of the others had at least some national exposure in addition to their home following which Scooter never did for quite obvious reasons.

Rizzuto and Caray, in fact all of the Caray's, are/were clowns. I don't what the criteria could have been to include Haray Caray only two away from the great Ernie Harwell. Jack Buck was overrated (and his son is presently overrated).

Garagiola being out is kind of a joke. Hell, I'll take Al Michaels-- or Murph, of course-- over Rizzuto or Caray. He was the sound of the playoffs to me as a kid.

How bout that Doc Emrick though. If there's a more exciting thing than hearing him say "rebound" I dunno what it is.

The best thing about Emrick is that not only are his calls nearly perfect all the time but he also knows when to shutup and let the game breath. Just a life-long hockey geek who grew up in hoops-mad Indiana, he's as good as anyone in any sport and hockey p-b-p is maybe hardest of all. Also a big Pitt Pirates fan. Garagiola was probably the first of the ex-jock to have a sustained career in the booth, but part of the reason he lasted as long as he did was by being a typical see-no-evil ex-player who would be termed very vanilla if he were doing games now. For what he was he was fine but I wouldn't put him up there with some of the others.

I've got no quibble with the top 5 but the rest? Caray and Rizzuto are terrible choices, as mentioned above, for blatant homerism/out-and-out rooting, for being caricatures and hell -- for just not even *paying attention to the game.* I was also never a fan of Harry Kalas and his overblown style but I know he has many fans. Murph is the blatant omission but I also would consider Dave Niehaus for the list.
