Name these Mets?

[url]http://www.uniwatchblog.com/ Uniwatch has a couple neat Mets items today, but I'm digging this ad for Supima. The patch tells us it's from the World's Fair year, and that looks like our beloved Eddie in back. Can we figure out the others? Jessie Gonder?

Re: Name these Mets?

Jim Hickman on the right, and I'm guessing Joe Christopher front-right.

Is that Ron Hunt on the end?

Re: Name these Mets?

The third Met is definitely Ed Kranepool.

I would say George Altman is the short black guy ... No it's the little lefty from Waco Texas, Al Jackson!

Second guy is Al Jackson...?

And I'm saying Ed Charles is second from right.

Re: Name these Mets?

No, 2nd from right is definitely Christopher. ... Charles wouldn't be a Met for 3 years...

The first guy is... Galen Cisco?

Chris Cannizzaro,Al Jackson, Ed Kranepool, Joe Christopher and Jim Hickman. That ad's from 1965. I own a large commercial-sized version of that ad.

That's Julius Monk, famous NY night-club owner, pitching Supima cotton with NY Mets. I just noticed that the picture on Uni Watch (reposted at the top of this thread) was cropped to omit the ad copy.

When is the field trip to view this collection?

That's not Cannizzaro. Seawolf is right. It's Galen Cisco. The picture itself is from 1964. Notice the World's Fair patch.

I think you and Seawolf are right on Cisco. If you have a 1965 Mets yearbook, Cisco and Cannizzarro are both conveniently pictured on page 21 for easy side by side comparison. Cisco's yearbook pic is a dead ringer for the first Met left in the Supima ad.

The photo might have been taken in 1964, but the ad ran in 1965. BTW, the Mets wore World's Fair patches in 1965 also -- but the 1965 unis had numbers on the front for the first time ever.

Re: Name these Mets?

That looks like Hickman's ears on the right, maybe, but the closed weave on the glove webbing suggests a pitcher.

Asides, Hick had gaps in his teeth, a schnozz that kept giving, and Krane-like bushy brows, none of which that guy is brandishing.

I think maybe it's Tracy Stallard, who had ears like that also, plus was listed at 6'5", which would have matched with the apparent two inches he seems to have on Ed Kranepool here.

Your post refreshed my recollection about a few things. When I acquired a larger size version of the Supima ad a few years ago, I immediately went through the same exercises this forum did yesterday in trying to identify the Mets appearing in the ad. Jackson, Kranepool and Christopher were easy enough to identify. In hindsight, so too was Galen Cisco. I have numerous photos of Cisco that undoubtedly ID him as the first Met (my left) in the ad and I clearly blundered in deciding that Cisco was Cannizzaro. Perhaps I simply looked at one photo of Cannizzaro that somewhat resembled Cisco and decided the matter for myself without further research. Whatever.

I identified the last Met on the right as Jim Hickman, but only through a process of elimination in which I decided that Hickman was merely the best choice. That Hickman is to me, the best choice, doesn't necessarily mean that Hickman is a good choice. I don't have that same sense of certainty in ID'ing Hickman as I have with the other four Supima Mets. I agree that, for example, the gap between Hickman's two front teeth is more pronounced than the gap between the last Supima Met.

I'm not convinced that the last Supima Met is Tracy Stallard because I don't see any resemblance at all between Stallard and the Supima Met -- your glove theory together with Stallard's listed height, although consistent with the ad, is not enough to overcome (for me) the total lack of facial resemblance.

Your post reminded me that I also went through player height data in trying to determine the identity of the last Supima Met. My second choice was --consistent with height and your pitcher theory- Tom Parsons, a 6'6" pitcher who was on the Mets in late '64 and early '65. I dismissed Parsons on my assumption that Supima would not want a late September fringe player call-up in the ad.

What do you think of Parsons?

Re: Name these Mets?

Not completely without merit, but I'll say no, as Parsons seems to have softer features than the sharper-boned mystery man.

I'm not closing the book on Hickman. He seemed to have had bridgework done, between the autograph photo below (not suitable for children) and the card that follows, which unfortunately doesn't reveal the webbing in his glove.

Notice how brilliant those seats shine in that brand new stadium?

Re: Name these Mets?

I picture Hickman uglier (the '63 card), but those new photos make it seem like him.

I thought it might be Tim Harkness, but Harkness is a lefty.

That's definitely Hickman.
