J-E-T-S 2010!!

ESPN is reporting the Chargers have dealt CB ANTONIO CROMARTIE to the Jets for a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick!!

Opposing teams should just have their wide receivers stay on the bench.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

His reputation:
Very good in coverage.
Very poor in tackling.

But on a team like the Jets that can pressure the QB, potentially a very good fit.

I saw someone (it was probably Tim Graham) call him the Ed Reed of safeties... he tries to make big plays and it gets him burned sometimes... but the Jets have 2 good over the top safeties (just keep Rhodes out of man-to-man) so he'll have help when he tries to cut under a route.

Kerry Rhodes' days with the Jets are over.

A little more than 24 hours after general manager Mike Tannenbaum said he expected the safety to be with the team next season and well into the future, the Jets shipped him to Arizona for a fourth-round pick in next month's draft and a 2011 seventh-rounder.

FA day was bing bang boom with a bunch of teams, on Friday the
Jets were giving Rhodes some 2 million bucks.

I'd love to spend a couple of weeks with a team when they chew on

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

Normally you'd think a season with no cap would be a boon to players but, probably to no one's surprise, the union agreed to an agreement with clauses in it that makes it even more advantageous for teams to be more aggressive about cutting/releasing/trading guys. I don't pretend to understand all the machinations but apparently the rules apply differently to different teams depending on how they finished last year so the Jets, as a "final four" team, are under more restrictions than others which cause them to be more likely to cut than sign.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

the jets arent allowed to sign free agents until they lose one who gets more money than whatever deal they want to sign. the jets can sign free agents who were not scheduled to BE free agents but were recently cut, for any amount. the jets can also make trades to their hearts content, with no regard for money as there is no cap (though they must be mindful of future salary as a cap is likely to return)
no cap also means no floor, so some teams who would normally spend to meet the floor only might go "el cheapo" this year.

That's the kind of thing I was referring to, one where the player's assoc somehow got themselves into an arrangement where a salary cap is removed and the result is (in some ways anyway) an increase in FA restrictions and a reduction in choices - which, of course, leads to a reduction in salaries.
By the time this coming season is over I could see them being the only union in sports (maybe anywhere) that's going to go on their knees to ownership begging them to put a cap back in.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

well lets not forget that football's cap includes a floor. i'm not an expert as to whether cap+floor or no cap + no floor would equal more money spent on payroll (independent of any other changes), but i think both owners and players are happy with the cap+floor arrangement.

my opinion/prediction is this- the owners will give in on their demand to set aside stadium money, the players will agree to a rookie slotting system or something similiar that, although they'll publicly complain about it, many veterans actually want. the NFL, at the height of its popularity, will not risk letting labor disputes derail the 2011 season and anyone who just ignores the talk of impending doom will enjoy football as usual.

on an unrelated note, Jones signed with KC so the Jets can now offer up to 5 million to a free agent. this doesnt have any effect on a guy who was CUT (like Coles, rumored to want back to NY)

Well what the players should want is to exist in a more true open-market. Instead, they manage to get themselves in a situation where they don't have real market conditions when there IS a salary cap/floor (plus all those 'franchise' and 'transitional' tags) and maybe in a worse one when there's NOT a salary cap.
Not that I have a particular dog in this fight* -- if the player's assoc is going to keep getting themselves into these positions then it's their problem not mine. But this is a union that actually had free agency years before baseball did but then bargained it away and therefore not only didn't have it but couldn't use the same legal means that the ballplayers did to get it because it was a right lost via negotiations rather than something that was illegally denied them all along. And it seems they've been on a losing streak ever since.

* my only objection in this is that the media has be so absurdly willing to carry the water for the owners in these issues, virtually parroting the party line about how FA would never work in football because of things like the offensive line needs to practice, work, play, live, eat, sleep, and bond together everyday for at least six years straight before they're truly a cohesive unit and other assorted bullshit.

If you frame it that way, Names, it doesn't make sense.

If you look at it as obtaining one of NFL history's best backfield pass-catch-and-runners-- while he's still more than serviceable, and better than Jones ever will be, in that respect-- at a bargain price (and more likely than not highly motivated), it makes plenty.

Oh, d'ymean that Washington guy with the compound leg fracture (the only worse injury for a guy like him-- heavily reliant on cuts and quick acceleration-- would have been a complete ACL or MCL tear)? And honestly, Jones may be better at running through tackles, but he's really not a fantastic rusher, and LT's top speed-- never a strength of his-- seems about at the same level as TJ's. (Jones got chased down a LOT on breakaways over his time here.) Big numbers aside, he really never has been a superlative runner. That line makes a LOT of people look fantastic.

Cool, but will he have the same burst? (I hope so. He's tremendous fun to watch, and-- as per a few visits to Florham Park by the family-- maybe the biggest sweetheart on the team, next to Mangold and Faneca.)

And if they're both healthy? In this pass-heavy NFL, you could argue that two pass-catching backs comprise a valuable redundancy. LT's cheaper, and-- unless last year was a 10-game flash-in-the-pan-- Greene does Jones' former job better than Jones does.

They tossed a coin at the J'ints offices, to determine which team would play in the first game at the new stadium.
- the Jets were not notified of it happening, nor were they invited to attend.
- the J'ints won the coin toss.
I hope that's the last thing they win in, oh..., 100 years.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

I thought it was at the league offices where said coin-tossing took place sans witnesses -- something which, according to the Jets anyway, took place right after league brass nixed the suggestion from the NYJ to use a coin-flip to determine the 'right' of first home game.
Jet brass - and probably not a few fans - are seeing this as a rigged moment used to perpetuate their perceived 2nd class status in the world of NYC/NJ football-dom.

Not sure I'd be that paranoid, but the feeling it does perpetuate is the one about NFL offices being overly stuffy and secretive, and about how they never miss a chance to hear of a plan that they couldn't and wouldn't pass off as their own.

The whole concept of 'Certificates of Authenticity' crack me up.
Now I'm not a collector at all so maybe I'm the wrong guy to ask; but if I were interested and believed the company I'm buying from to be legit there's little need for a certificate telling me it is, while if they're crooked enough to sell me forged merchandise they'd have no qualms of forging the CofA too.

They only saved 2M of Faneca's 7M salary with the cut, essentially giving him 5M to walk in a capless year, during which they're opening a stadium.

Mays getting snapped up before the Jets' second pick kinda stinks-- he seems a hit-or-miss "big play" guy (think less headhunting Roy Williams), which works fine on a team with the Jets' personnel; he's freer to play centerfield/gamble/make plays with superlative cover talent covering his ass. But why no Chad Jones, or another of a few apparently-solid safetys available there, in the second over the talented project G Ducasse?

Unless they know something those of us who watched the last two seasons don't know about LaDainian Tomlinson-- y'know... from the offseason handshaking they did-- the RB situation is muddled, and doesn't make much sense on paper.

The thing about the fans in the actual seats, with the whole pre-game stuff plus security being what it is today, the SB has always herded peeps into their seats well in advance of the game (like an hour or two). Now add that to the longer game due to increased commercial breaks and extended half-times and we're talking maybe 5-plus hours on a plastic seat in a New Jersey February for all those not jammed into corporate boxes.

This is so funny and somewhat hypocritical of the NHL types , a lot of talk regarding Ryan and his f-bombing on Hard Knocks. Tony Dungy weighed in today on the Dan Patrick Show.

"It's hard for me to be around that," Dungy said, "and if I were in charge, no, I wouldn't hire somebody like that. Now I've been around 'F' bombs, so it's not like it's new. I just don't think that has to be part of your every-minute, everyday vocabulary to get your point across.

"I'm disappointed with all the profanity," Dungy continued. "I think Rex can make his points without all that."

There are even some wondering if Goodell should call him and sanction him .

When asked if commissioner Roger Goodell should call Ryan and tell him to tone down his act, Dungy said: "I would hope that he does. ...I don't think our young people need to hear that that's what's done to be successful. Because it doesn't have to be that way."

I'm assuming cursing is an everyday part of the NFL.

The Jets should have blown the injury-riddled Jints out of the building and claimed it as their own.
But the new place is now their stadium - I fear forever. You can't unring a bell, and the gong sounded last night.
The only good thing I can take out of the game is that it showed how much Revis is missed and hopefully they will get him signed ASAP.

- No, paying too much attention (or any for that matter) to last night's game is an embarrassment.

"The Jets should have blown the injury-riddled Jints out of the building and claimed it as their own."

- Can one even be "injury riddled" by the first exhibition game?

"But the new place is now their stadium - I fear forever. You can't unring a bell, and the gong sounded last night."

- Oh I agree! Someone needs to draw up plans for a new $1.6 billion dollar stadium somewhere else because this one is tainted in perpetuity.

"The only good thing I can take out of the game is that it showed how much Revis is missed and hopefully they will get him signed ASAP."

yeah, the Jets' 1st team defense sucked and Revis would have been playing in the second half of a pre-season game when Dwight Lowery and Maurice Cole got burned for touchdowns in his place.

The only BAD thing I can take out of this game is that Nick Folk missed from 46 yards out, and a team built on defense and the running game can't afford to miss those very often.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

There was an arrogance among Giant fans of a certain age in a 'we were here first and it's our city you upstarts' kind of way, one which derived from the arrogance of the NFL as a whole in those days. That's why I thought it was so funny to watch the NFL "celebrate" the AFL's 50th anniversary last year; celebrating a league which they spent almost a decade ignoring, ridiculing, and trying to run out of business. At least when MLB honors the Negro League teams or players they have the decency to do so with a degree of atonement.

But at this point, four decades after the merger plus the team movements, realignments, and expansions that have further blurred the lines between the two, many of the teams in the league have little or no connection to those wars and if you're given towards using the results of a meaningless exhibition to fan the flames of those past feuds I think you've got bigger problems than just the score of the game.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

Yes, but the key is, how much of that is guaranteed? (Like any other football deal-- thanks, Mr. Upshaw-- it's nonguaranteed. "10 years, 160 million" is nothing more than a big number to stoke egos/announce at a press conference.) Details are hard to come by, but according to guys who root this stuff out professionally, Revis' contract is a complicated deal, one that guarantees about $47 million over 4 years; if he gets through the 2011 season, he will have made $32.5 million in just those two years. (This makes him the de facto highest-paid CB in the league in those two years, as Nnamdi Asomugha earns $16.1M this year and slightly less next year. Still, Asomugha has $46M guaranteed over 3 years, Revis has a little more spread over 4 years... so Asomugha's absurdly-good deal is still better for him.)

The thing is, between his being under contract and the Jets having far more options in terms of moving forward than he did ("starting Cromartie and Wilson/being a little thin in the defensive backfield" vs. "playing UFL for pizza money"), he didn't have nearly as much leverage as his agents seemed to think he did. None of this will keep him from holding out in two years, once his base salary drops to 6.5-7M annually.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

OK , so most men are pigs , that we know....and form all accounts the Jets acted worse than pigs when Azteca reporter Ines Sainz was at practice waiting to interview Sanchez .

Story here
New York Jets' alleged harassment of reporter Ines Sainz brings unwanted attention on eve of opener

Rex Ryan has become a cult hero to Jets fans with his oversized personality, his trash-talking and Super Bowl guarantees.

He would reach near-legendary status in New York sports if he were able to deliver on his championship promise. But, as the Jets get ready to open the season Monday night at home against the Ravens, he also must worry about how quickly it can all fall apart.

The frat-house atmosphere, the boys-will-be-boys approach, veterans tying up a big-mouth rookie to the goalpost in training camp and squirting Gatorade on him - all basically harmless. But just as quickly as Ryan has gone up, he can come crashing right down if he doesn't keep his team under control.

This isn't about 4 a.m. phone calls from the police about one of his guys getting arrested, the call all coaches fear. It's about respect. It's about his players and coaches not crossing the line from harmless fun to cruel teasing.

The reports that came out Sunday, which Roger Goodell and the Jets are now investigating, involve Ines Sainz, a former Miss Spain who is a reporter for TV Azteca in Mexico. She was at the Jets' facility in Florham Park on Saturday to interview Mark Sanchez and reportedly was being harassed by catcalls, whistling and extended stares by the players. The Association of Women In Sports Media has asked the NFL to investigate.

Ryan runs a loose camp and he's proud of it. All you had to do was watch five minutes of "Hard Knocks" this summer and you can see why the Jets will never have a problem recruiting free agents. But if this investigation reveals that Sainz was subjected to harassment, then Ryan must be held accountable as well as any of his players who may have treated her poorly.

There is no reason for women who elect to work in the sports media business to be subjected to unfair treatment. The days of women being intimidated covering sports are long gone. They deserve to be treated with respect and given the same access and courtesy.

Defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman reportedly was intentionally overthrowing his players in an interception drill so the ball would land at Sainz's feet.

Woody Johnson spoke to Sainz Sunday. "He stressed to Ines that he expects all members of the Jets organization to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times," the team announced in a prepared statement. "We will continue to work with the league to gather the facts and take appropriate steps necessary to maintain a respectful environment for the media."

Johnson owns the team. Ryan runs the team. He should be next on the phone. At the Jets' team meeting Sunday night, a member of the Jets' PR staff addressed the players about the incident.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

To be fair to Cromartie-- and, to a lesser extent, Wilson-- by the third quarter, the refs were reflexively calling illegal contact/holding/PI on any contact between Boldin and whoever was guarding him on anything downfield.

To be fair to the refs... Cromartie and Wilson looked like shit, technique-wise. At least Wilson was getting beat by a step or two, and seemed to have problems with the burst of the guys he minded-- it's somewhat understandable, as it's his first game, and he was being asked to cover RoBoldin and a pissed-off Houshmandzadeh. He'll learn.

As for Cromartie, if you're falling down/getting turned around multiple times during pursuit in conditions where nobody else is, either you accidentally left your pre-game flip-flops on, or you need some footwork lessons. He's the inverse of Revis-- extreme physical talent (witness the interception and subsequent tightrope walk to stay inbounds) with little or sloppy technical wherewithal.

And Keller... guh. I mean, that's the offense in microcosm, isn't it?

"Throw at Toni Braxton?"

I generally liked what the Jets were doing on offense. My favorite playcall of the night, though, might be the Dolphins' throwing play-action on 3rd-and-inches in the redzone late in the game. Superficially, it seems ballsy, but it really makes a LOT of all-around sense (the result-- a TD for Miami-- notwithstanding). Throw a safe pass, and if it fails, you've still got another down with which to play... even if your team's QB gets sacked, you're still in FG range.

Sick of it too, but, well... yeah, it is. The workplace issues muddy the whole affair; it's not merely Favre coming on to some chippy, it's a prominent team employee making improper overtures to a lower-level Jet employee (or three, perhaps, if the others are to be believed), with all the implicit pressure of such offers. If the facts are anything close to what's leaked out, one can easily make a case that the recipients of his... um... gifts had reason to fear for their job security/career prospects had they spoken up.

Relying on a late holding penalty on a punt that ended up gifting them something like 25 yards of field position, they barely beat a Roethlisberger-free Steeler team. It's hardly definitive.

Maybe, but you could do that with any game.

You could point to the 2000 yards in penalties the Jets had in week one as a reason they shouldn't have won that game. And Baltimore's only loss came when the Bengals got points thanks to some shaky personal foul penalties against the Raven defense.

Do you think it's a sign of how absurdly specialized football has become is that, even though teams carry 53 guys on the roster, not one of the other 52 is remotely competent at kicking PATs when the main guy goes down? I mean is the punter really that bad at it that the coaching staff feels better giving the 300+ lb rookie a try because he claims he used to play soccer in HS? Not that I'm trying to return to the days when the QB also played defensive back or anything but you at least have to train your guys so that the punter can kick and the kicker can punt should an emergency arrive.

I'm not complaining or anything, I just find it strange that NFL coaches are such control freaks yet seem to have no contingency plan should **SHOCK** an injury pop up.

Specializing in sports is just such a counterproductive trend. When looking to a player's talents also means exposing his flaws, that's human, that's exciting, and it also allows the truly well-rounded player to stand out as much as he (or she) deserves.

Baseball would be a better sport if there were 16 or so players per squad, and that big Detroiit lug would be a folk hero that could run for mayor of Detroit today if that kick was two feet to the left.

That said, if there's 53 (really?!) players per squad, it's inexplciable that teams opt not to carry an extra guy that can back up both the kicker and punter. There's one in almost every high school.

"He kicked it well, too. Just barely missed."

-- While I know what you mean, kicking it well but still missing a PAT is not really kicking it well. That's like a 98% play in the NFL.

"Me? I would go for two there, figuring that I probably have just as good a chance to convert as I do for my DT to convert an XP."

-- That's certainly an option, but there's gotta be some second guy on the squad who can hit PATs and short FGs with some dependability and I can't believe kickers & punters are so exclusive that one can't fill in for the other without embarrassing himself, or that coaches don't take the time to either teach them to cross-train or simply don't know if they can because they never tried to find out.

53 plus another bunch on the "taxi squad" - although I think someone has to be moved to the injured list before one of them can be promoted.

"it's inexplciable that teams opt not to carry an extra guy that can back up both the kicker and punter. There's one in almost every high school."

Some teams even carry three kickers: one for punts, one for FGs, and one big-legged guy just for kickoffs and really long & desperate FG tries.
That guy Fatsis who wrote the Scrabble book spent a training camp w/the Broncos as a writer/kicking wannabe and one of the (real) kickers on the team claimed, in a kind of 'Moneyball' way, that the 'field position' part of the game is so important to points scored/surrendered that he was all for the 3-kicker system. Coaches must tend to buy into that kind of thinking too, because that plus all the other specialization that goes on (these guys only play third in long situations, this is our 'third and short' package, etc.) is what makes rosters balloon to 53 bodies largely consisting of very un-versatile players, or at least bodies that aren't trusted to be versatile outside of their specific instructions.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

I'm fairly certain you can only dress 45 players (plus 1 emergency QB) for an NFL game. I think the 53 includes players on the practice squad, it's not 53 plus a practice squad.

I do find it funny how the commentators talked about this game being a test for the Lions to see how far they have come along, like the Jets have won anything recently..

The Lions were up for it and at (a newly noisy) Ford Field. And, with Stafford at the helm, they're really not bad. VandenBosch and that defensive line have played some great games this year, and they've got horses enough to score in bunches against decent defenses.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

Oh, those Ryan boys!

The Ryan rivalry will continue Sunday, when Rex Ryan’s Jets travel to Cleveland, where Rob Ryan is the Browns’ defensive coordinator. This being the Ryan brothers, the level of trash talking has only increased in recent weeks.

Rob Ryan, speaking from the Browns’ facility near Cleveland, pointed to his early victories as a college assistant (Tennessee State over Morehead State) and noted that he owned more Super Bowl rings than Rex (two to one). Rex Ryan said in a telephone interview that he triumphed the last three times they stood on opposing sidelines and that he had never lost to Rob in the N.F.L.

The trash talking even extended to whiffle ball, a Ryan family pastime.

Rob: “I absolutely kill him. His bat’s tardy.”

Rex: “He’s delusional. I buckle him with the knuckle curve. He’s never been the same since I hit him in the head with a golf ball when we were 10.”

Growing up in Toronto, the Ryan brothers played backyard football, with Jim, older by six years, pitted against the twins. Their games had one rule: if you did not dispense cheap shots, you were penalized. In one contest, Rex or Rob, Jim cannot remember which, slid down a snowbank into a moving vehicle. In another, Rob celebrated before he reached the goal line, then turned smack into a tree.

After hundreds of such games, the twins reached high school, and the days of Ryan versus Ryan and Ryan ended. In their final meeting, Jim said, “Rex dropped me and Rob kept laughing at me while stepping on my face.”

Dumb interception on Cleveland's part. Gregg Easterbrook is bound to point that out.

That's twice in a row that the Jets won due to terrible strategy by the other teams (i.e., Detroit stopping the clock for them). I like seeing them win, but they won't be getting gifts like that every game.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

Detroit's clock management was dumb strategy, but I wouldnt call picking the ball off at the 1-yard line "strategy" any more than Benny Agbayani handing a live ball to a fan with 1 out was "strategy", it was just a bad play by a player who didn't fully realize the situation. Also, theres no gaurantee that Weatherford doesn't pin them inside the 5 yard line and their ensuing drive goes exactly the same.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

Yeah, I'm kind of on board that the INT was not a really terrible play by the DB. It's not the ideal position to pick the ball off, but at that time of the game I think possession of the ball there is very valuable...and should be his primary thought.

#1, with Edwards right on his back, it's hard to just say "knock it down"...what if it pops up and Edwards grabs it? Not likely, but you never know. Weird things happen...remember that strange INT Revis had against SD last year?

#2 What if Edwards slips and he breaks the tackle, and the DB follows a couple blockers and gets a 30 yard return or so?

#3, even if the Jets punt, the INT does save the Browns the time (8-10 seconds) that the Jets would run off on 4th down. That might be the difference in getting your team down the field for a potential GW FG attempt.

#4, there are no guarantees on the punt. Suppose somebody roughs the kicker? Suppose the returner muffs the punt and the Jets get it? Suppose Weatherford gets ambitious and tries another fake?

Mangini being unsure of whether to play for the win or tie (throw on 1st down, run on 2nd down, pass attempt leading to a sack on 3rd down) was I think the bigger issue for the Browns.

This. He runs on first down, the game's over. Hell, if he runs on third, the game's practically over.

Good coaches, like good writers, make decisions. Mangini didn't. He tried to have it both ways right there, and pushed his luck-- the same luck that got him to OT, thanks to Folk's foot-- to breaking.

Francesa made an interesting point (there, I said it) that Mangini would take a tie there but couldn't really make it look like he was playing for a tie.
And actually, I thought they had a pretty good play called for Benjamin Watson, but McCoy couldn't connect with him.

Truth be told, he'd been pretty decent with the decision-making before the last few weeks (seemingly "aggressive" moves like going for it on fourth-and-short near midfield or near the goal-line are actually the smart thing to do, odds-wise; his use of challenges, before taking a Reid-ian turn the last two games, wasn't too terrible either).

Hell, even if the last two games show his "true talent level," given the two who preceded him, he's still an improvement there. (Think about Mangini's endgame a few weeks ago against the Jets... or Edwards' endgame during ANY game he's ever coached.)

There's that, too; but those are fewer and further between than the other stuff, and more glaring.

Leave aside the 1-3 times a game where the announcers praise his accuracy-- EVERY pro thrower has a few of those per game, or else he's not a pro QB for long. At least half the time, he's not placing the ball where it should be; even on some completions, he's throwing the ball behind guys, or making players stretch/go down to the ground FAR more often than they should. On a dry day, that hurts; on a wet day, where stuff that isn't on receivers' hands/in their bellies skips past them, it's absolute murder. I'd say that it's a receiver issue, but it seems the case with virtually all of his pass-catchers, and guys like Keller and Cotchery (and Holmes, though he's missed several weeks of practice/installation) have reps for being very, very good about their route running. I mean, he overthrows screens as often-- or more often-- than some scrubs like Delhomme or Anderson do.

I just took a look at pro-football-reference.com, guess who the CAREER leader in completion percentage is? part of it is the changing nature of the NFL (the top-25 contains only 3 guys who retired before the year 2001, you might have heard of Joe Montana, Troy Aikman, and Steve Young)

I think I've seen them line up as such-- or close to it-- before, under Mangini and/or Edwards and I remember the Titans and Broncos both doing it in somewhat recent games-- in the last 4 years-- I've attended... it's kinda common practice, I gathered. Anyway, as they're out of bounds-- by a ways-- it's legal. (All but the tripping.)

Frankly, this account seems a little more plausible* than Myers' aspersion-casting jamboree, in which he insists that Ryan either had to give "the order" or, if he didn't, that he's directly responsible because of the atmosphere he fosters (if you think baseball hackery is bad... you REALLY don't want to read tabloid football coverage).

my theory is this- football writers get paid to write as much money and as many articles as baseball writers, but they have 1/10 the number of games to write about, so they just need to "make more" of every story they can get a hold of.

Time's up! Here's my theory: Football is the least transparent of all sports. Television camera angles follow the ball and provide an entertaining perspective, but the game should be viewed, optimally, from the end zone in order to see everything that's happening. In football, more so than in any other sport, what happens away from the ball sets up what the ball carriers are able to do and is thus, more important then what happens near the ball. The end zone angle is the perspective by which teams review games internally. Because not only does too much happen on a football field on any given play, but it happens all over the gridiron, over a wider canvas than can be covered by one camera. The most knowledgeable football journalists concede that whenever they report on a game viewed on television, they generally rewind the game several times before filing their piece.

But even if TV were to broadcast its football games from the end zone, most viewers wouldn't have the background necessary to understand much, probably most of what they're watching. Here, I'm including even the most die-hard fanatical fans as well as the media. I think that the game is just too opaque and complex -- strategies seem to rival those used by nation-states engaged in full scale military conquests -- and that without having experienced the game at an organized level, a viewer is incapable of appreciating what ought to be appreciated. Hence the hacky coverage.

I'd say complement, but that's just me.

Oh, and I agree with the 'transparency' angle.
One of the reasons I've always preferred baseball to football is that baseball's strategies and nuances are all out there in the open for fans to predict, dissect, first-guess, second-guess, etc. But football, for all its complexities, is hidden to even the more studious fans. When the coach's post-game answer to the question about how his offensive line played is; 'I won't know until I look at the game film", it pretty much sums up how insider-ish it all gets. HE knows (or will after reviewing the film) that the QB was supposed to take a 7-step drop instead of a 5-step on that one play in the 3rd quarter and that the left guard pulled instead of pushed, but there's no way that WE will ever know that.

And that's the other thing, football is so closed off even to the everyday media who consider themselves fortunate if they can get more as much as 30 seconds of unscripted time with the star because they know they're not going to get even that from a coach who would give up the secrets to U.S. troop movements before he'd reveal the tiniest thing about the sacred game plans. That lack of info is what in turn leads to the endless speculation from talking heads that goes on between about Tuesday and kick-off on Sunday as those claiming either knowledge or clairvoyance attempt to divine the future for the sake of all the bettors who are looking for the slightest bit of knowledge (or alleged knowledge) when filing out their weekly sheets or fantasy teams.

I was picking up Thai food and while waiting at the counter I saw that short snap play. It was an impressive call, getting all the downlineman in an upright position stretching their necks and looking for the ball bouncing around the backfield, if only for a second. You could sense a victory right there --- a demorailzing moment for the Pitt defense and their supporters.

But if you don't get the timing just perfect on that play --- woo, boy. The center should get the game ball.

I thought those were both great play calls. The short snap to Tomlinson has some of the advantages of the Wildcat (ball in the playmakers hands faster) without the disadvantage of the defense being 99% sure you are running the ball pre-snap.

Oh and that was another good playcalling decision today- no wildcat. I'm tired of it. The whole world knows Brad Smith isn't throwing, and for the one time he has thrown it doesnt make up for all the times it hasnt worked on the ground.

Jets ran the ball pretty well today, especially considering the Steelers have the top-ranked run defense in the last 50 years so far.

The defense wasn't so hot today though. They allowed 2 very long TD drives and almost a 3rd one at the end. Anyone not named "Revis" is continuing to get beat by receivers while the pass-rush fails to get there.

Basically? They followed the Pats' game plan from a couple of weeks ago. If you're patient and smart about it and you've got a decent line, you can run on this team, which sells out up the middle on obvious run downs virtually 100% of the time (it's the cheating version of run-stuffing, and it's what made the bootleg and a couple of the big bounce-off-tackle runs work). The guards had a great game clearing inside lanes, too.

Nymr83 wrote:

The pass rush is the problem. Even Revis can't hold coverage for five seconds on every play.

Andy Reid's children are felons.

Tony Dungy-- America's f-ing Football Conscience-- had a son who killed himself, with a mountain of circumstantial evidence pointing to the fact that he was a closeted homosexual while alive... and living with a dad who openly crusaded against the immorality of such.

I think that a big pile of public shaming, some creatively vulgar signage/chanting, and some bitchy whispers at the supermarket will come the Ryans' way; given the profession that he's in, the success he's had, and his public persona-- very much the embodiment of "fuck it"-- however, this is less likely to blow back as severely as you project.

Unlike the Favre thing, this has virtually no newsworthiness, really... but hey, Denton's crew has made their feelings/ethic clear again and again-- this is exactly the sort of thing for which they live.

Yeah, but (1) having sons engagng in boys-will-be-boys behaviors like beating people up and smashing cars and (2) having an open contempt for homosexuals sadly fit within the profile of macho football guys. Having a middle-aged wife who and flouts her kinks and willingness to get around publickly is a different deal.

No matter what Mark Sanchez does this weekend, he'll already have won...in the heart department.

The 24-year-old quarterback was immediately taken by Aiden and his upbeat personality and his love of the Jets. A few days later, Sanchez & Co. beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh -- the biggest win of the season -- and Sanchez sent his new friend a game ball.

Sanchez was deeply touched by Aiden, who battled rhabdomyosarcoma, according to a 2008 New York Daily News article. There was a lemon-sized tumor that spread from his pelvis to his lungs, and he required 60 weeks of chemotherapy.

They became texting buddies and, one day, Sanchez surprised Aiden's parents by asking, "Can I come over?" When Sanchez arrived, the boy was sleeping. Sanchez sat at Aiden's feet, waiting until he woke up.

"He opened his eyes and there was Mark, sitting on the couch," Lisa said. "He was so sweet."

The same guy who missed open men with unimpeded paths to the end zone at least six times on three different drives.

I'm rooting for the kid, but if they're going to beat the Pats, he has to get in rhythm some time before three minutes to go in the half.

that play ended up being meaningless, because we gave the ball back to Peyton anyway, and he scored. the "crux" of the game was the defense holding Colts to a fieldgoal after that, and a 47 year return by Cromartie on the ensuing kickoff. actually, the "crux" was the Jet offense holding the ball most of the 2nd half, grinding out yardage, eating up the clock and keeping Peyton to 2 drives. The best defense really was their offense.

All that being said, the kid really pisses me off. He plays like shit for 3/4 and then get credit for rising to the ocasion in the 4th Q. Of course, the Jets would be sitting on a comfy lead if he'd been halfway decent up to that point, rendering heroics unneccesary.

We should start calling him Scotty.

Scotty: Do you mind a little advice? Starfleet captains are like children. They want everything right now and they want it their way. But the secret is to give them only what they need, not what they want.
Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge: Yeah, well, I told the Captain I'd have this analysis done in an hour.
Scotty: How long will it really take?
Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge: An hour!
Scotty: Oh, you didn't tell him how long it would *really* take, did ya?
Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge: Well, of course I did.
Scotty: Oh, laddie. You've got a lot to learn if you want people to think of you as a miracle worker.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

Subtlest trash talk ever? Subtlest trash talk ever.

Q: What has Deion Branch brought to the offense?

WW: Deion is such a great player and such a great teammate. The guy is tough to cover. He does a lot of great things out there - he runs some really good routes. Tom [Brady] trusts him and they are kind of on the same page. He is another guy with great feet and he can really move around and do some great things out there.

Q: You guys were on such an impressive role heading into the last 5 - 6 weeks of the season, how do you guys feel you will handle the bye week, are you afraid that you have lost any momentum at all?

WW: To be honest with you, I feel like our practices have almost simulated a game as well as we could have. We really got after it during the bye week and even this week of really concentrating and practicing hard and making sure that every play, even in practice... you never know when you will get the chance to run it again before the game, so you want to make sure that you are putting your best foot forward out there and making it happen.

Q: How does the playoff atmosphere translate to practices this week of preparation, do you sense it?

WW: Yeah, absolutely. [We're] really moving forward and we're going out there being good little foot soldiers. We are making sure we are going out there doing everything coach [Belichick] asks us to do: making plays and doing everything necessary to get ready for the game.

Dennis Byrd News Conference in New England

By Nick Gallo

Dennis Byrd, the former Jets defensive lineman whose four-year career ended when he broke his neck and was paralyzed in 1992, spoke to the Jets on Saturday night at the team hotel. He gave what has been characterized as an inspirational message to the team in advance of today's AFC Divisional Round Game against the Patriots.

On Wednesday, Byrd sent head coach Rex Ryan the jersey that was cut off of him on Nov. 29, 1992, the day of his injury against the Kansas City Chiefs. On Sunday, less than two hours before the Jets faced the Patriots, Byrd talked with reporters. Here is the transcript of his response to questions.

On his speech to the Jets on Saturday night...
This is one of the most special moments for me as a former athlete, as an individual. This is one of those priceless moments, a convergence of many things for this organization, the things that I’ve been through in life. It’s special and important for me to make a context with this team and to share with them some of the things that are so important. Because the most important thing about this moment is for the men of this team to understand that they don’t come along very often.

This is a critical point, an important point for the Jets and this organization for these young men. I want them to know that this is it. It’s not looking to the future, it’s not looking to next year or we need this piece or that piece or we’ll be better when we do this. It’s now. The talent is here, the coaching is here, the organizational commitment is here and it’s time to do it.

On how he got reconnected with the Jets...

I’ve been in contact with a young man that is the son of a former scout for the Jets. The former scout is Marv Sunderland, the son is Brock. Brock is now a scout with the Jets and we Facebooked and it was neat to catch up with him.

And it’s been in my heart for a long time to send the jersey that was cut off of me when I had my injury 18 years ago, to send it back. They have honored me by not reissuing that number and it’s a great honor. I wanted to return it and let it be what it is, what life it took on. We’ll see, and Coach Ryan received it so well. I was excited about doing it and it was exciting for me to have Brock make a connection back with the team. There’s a spillover of young men still in the organization and that’s nice to see.

On why he hasn't been around the team much over the years...

I’ve always been connected with the franchise, but there’s been turnover. People come and go, coaches come and go. The team has been sold. The natural part of it, and the natural part of being a father and children and sports and this was the season, that wasn’t as easy to get done as if I lived here. This moment is important because this is a crossroads.

This is a time in the life of this organization where they have an opportunity to take that next step. Everything is here and it’s in place. I wanted to make sure that I at least did what I knew was in my heart and to just do anything that I could to let these young men know how important this moment is.

On the reaction to his message from the players...

It was priceless. When I was speaking to them initially, they were so quiet, I was a little nervous that this was falling flat, that this wasn’t working. That happens at times whenever you have people’s attention. I didn’t panic, but in visiting with the men afterwards and the coaches, it was easy to see that it had the effect that I had really been wishing for.

On Braylon Edwards' Twitter comments about how inspirational his message was...

For me, that’s what I wanted to have done because last night was not the time for the rah-rah speech, getting everybody ready to go and play the game tonight. Last night was about understanding the nuances of athletics, competition, what this moment is. Capturing this moment, not letting it slip through your fingers.

There will be a time in the future and there will be a time to appreciate and enjoy when your children are born, when your children are married, those priceless things. But this is not that time. This is the time when you set up yourself for making that next step. For beating an opponent that is a challenge to you and making a statement and that’s what this is about.

On how he was introduced...

The introduction, Coach Ryan had a highlight tape made. It went back to those black and whites when you remember me being around. He showed the highlight film and then he introduced me and I spoke to the men for about 15 minutes and shared the things that we’re talking about now in general and I stayed around after, had a snack and just visited.

On if he still feels that he’ll always be a Jet...

Well, they’re the only colors I’ve ever worn. While I live a quiet life, I do have a television and I have followed every game, all the players. It’s been a joy to watch and this is sports, the highs and lows. This is what you have when you have a team, whenever you follow a group or an organization. This is the beauty of sports. This has been my love as far as a professional football team and this is a very special moment.

On sharing time with Rex Ryan...

He’s an Okie, so there’s so many common things. We’ve talked about a lot of things. One of the things we laughed about, as a grown man, this is the only time I’ve been in public without a pocket knife because of the airport travel. That may not be funny to you, but Rex appreciates that.

Just all the little things. Our conversation last night was not about Xs and Os. It was just about what I like to say or call those nuances of the game. You do have the Xs and Os and blocking and tackling and all of those things. But there’s a side where a man’s will counts for a tremendous amount. That’s kind of what we talked about and I shared it with the team. You have a body, a mind and a will. What we talked about is the will.

On how special the whole experience was...

It means a lot to me right now. It’s going to mean a lot more to me in a few hours and we’ll go to that next step after that. This is that moment. It’s that moment for men to put that stamp on who they’re supposed to be, who everybody thought they could be. This is that time. There come these moments where you have to rise to the challenge and this is the one. This is the present game, this is the one that counts the most. I’m excited about it.

On if he’d like to come to New York next season...

I have no idea what is going on. I was so humbled by the reception that I’ve had and it’s been a joy, it’s just been a lot of fun and a joy and I sure would like to be there.

On why he sent his jersey to the team...

I sent them the jersey with the understanding that this is something that I’d like to share with you and really the jersey was sent for Coach Ryan. I love to watch him as a coach. He understands the significance of these kinds of things and I was thrilled to see when Coach Ryan was hired as the coach, his attitude, his pedigree, the way that he coaches and how aggressive they are.

I didn’t know how many games the Jets were going to win, but I knew that they weren’t going to lose any fights. I was kind of excited about that.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

Being sparing with blitzes is actually-- generally, at least-- a more favorable defensive strategy, if you can get any pressure at all with your front four linemen; you can put more energy on coverage. And they did do quite a bit of edge rushing with extra defensive backs (like Drew Coleman).

What really rankled was their playing right into Roethlisberger's strengths, leaving him a 5-to-10 yard cushion in the middle of the field (by dropping both middle linebackers into coverage) and/or not containing scrambles to the sidelines. All the damage he did all night fell into these two categories.

What really, really rankled was the shit tackling early on. That more or less kept the first two scoring drives alive (with some help from two killer penalties).

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

if you can't run or stop the run, your not going to win in Pittsburgh in February. This game was lost in the trenches, not on the blackboard.

Mendenhall is very good, but he was 15th among 1000+yd rushers in avg yrds per carry. So, this was as much about bad tackling as good running. And stupid mistakes all over the place. Cro's face mask on opening drive turned a 4th and long into a first down, and allowed Pitt to sustain the drive, ultimately turning into 7pts. Sanchez once again took the 1st Q off, getting passes battered down often, missing receivers, throwing while backpedaling.

Why does this team seem to come out so badly so often? Yes, great late game rally. But why must we always have to rally? Why can't we ever play from ahead?

For a good team, this team makes me angry.

Honestly, from an unbiased non-Jets fan...they are simply a good team, as you said, and not a great team...yet. Sanchez will get better and the longer the core group plays for that toe-sucking loudmouth, the more they will love fighting for him. They simply weren't the best team in the AFC in either of the past two seasons which is why they haven't won the AFC Championship game. But this was hardly their last chance. I expect the Jets to be competitive in that division, and in the league, for years and years.

Don't be angry. The Jets have won as many playoff games in the past three weeks as my team has won in the past 18 seasons.

I watch the Steelers week in and week out and one thing I can say is that their defensive does not get tired, so the Jets earned every point they scored in the second half. The Jets are going to be a good team for a while and I think they will get into the playoffs at least for a few more years

We were hoping the Bears would win the first game because we have known their kicker Robbie Gould since he was a cute-little BSC book-collecting kid, but the Steelers Packers Superbowl is going to be a lot of fun and a real blue collar brawl. I am looking forward to it!

If a CBA is reached, the team will have the same core, but be different, maybe vastly so, around the edges. How different, exactly, depends on what kind of a salary cap is reached... but you have to figure that Tomlinson (via release), Taylor, and Cromartie will probably not be back, and at least one of Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes, Mangold, Ellis and David Harris won't be, either.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

Mangold is under contract isn't he?
Leaving him out (he'd be first) I'd rank the other from most important to least important to bring back: Harris, Ellis, Holmes, Cromartie, Smith*, Tomlinson, Edwards, Taylor.

*Brad Smith also needs to be signed

Ellis, Harris, and Holmes are critical to me. Cromartie and Brad Smith are pretty close to that. Tomlinson and Taylor shouldn't matter too much, the Jets can find anyone to team up with Shonn Greene, its about the O-line not them. I'm not a huge Edwards fan but he'd be welcome back for sure. Cromartie was probably seen as a rental, but with the way Kyle Wilson has NOT panned out yet, Cromartie could be alot more necessary, maybe more so than the other defenders.

I'd Also like to see Pryce brought back if he doesnt retire.

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

Not sure where I saw about Mangold or Tomlinson or Taylor... perhaps I was conflating the 2011 FAs with a later list? Anyway... here's what we've got.

The FA list:
LB David Harris*
CB Antonio Cromartie
WR Santonio Holmes
WR Braylon Edwards
WR/KR Brad Smith
S Brodney Pool
DE Shaun Ellis
DE Trevor Pryce
LB Lance Laury
FB Tony Richardson
CB Drew Coleman
OT Wayne Hunter
S Eric Smith
S James Ihedigbo*
K Nick Folk*
P Steve Weatherford
QB Kellen Clemens
OL Robert Turner**

*Restricted FA, but UFA in an uncapped year (like this one)
**Restricted FA

Re: J-E-T-S 2010!!

Ugh. Get rid of this guy. It's easy to find a corner to give up 100+ yards on a regular basis.

Earlier in the week Antonio Cromartie bashed the union and the league for the way negotiations are going for a new collective bargaining agreement. On Thursday, a tweet on Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's account said: "Somebody ask Cromartie if he knows what CBA stands for." The tweet was later removed but not before Cromartie found out about it. He responded Thursday afternoon with a tweet that said: "hey Matt if u have something to then say it be a man about it. Don't erase it. I will smash ur face in."

You don't get too many chances too stand at the Summit.

True you don't, but even if you want to say how bad the NFL parity is, you still have the usual suspects, if they're smart and don't have too much turmoil and turnover at the top (GM, coach and obviously a few key players), in the mix year-after-year-after-year.

I'm not going to sit here and declare the Jets the next Colts (whom I believe are now the record holder for consecutive years in the postseason at this point, or its pretty darn close), but I'd think this regime has a better chance of accomplishing that sort of goal, and even bettering it, than Jet regimes of the past.

FWIW, Did you know...with the exception of his two Giant postseason runs, one of 3 straight years and another of just 2 years (both culminated in the SB championships, first time they missed out on the postseason in the strike year, and the second was his final game as coach), Bill Parcells NEVER took a team to back-to-back postseasons?

I bring that up because I heard a story about how outwardly upset Parcells was after the 1998 AFC Championship loss was, and bemoaning the fact that a lot had to go right in order for the Jets to make it back the next year. Showing almost a defeatist attitude before...hell even before the Broncos played in that year's Super Bowl!

As opposed to Ryan whom already is all but guaranteeing a spot in the 2011 AFC Championship Game. I think I like that kind of outward confidence better, and feel KAHN-fident that this Jet run may be one of multiple trips to the Summit.

Am I reading this wrong: Parcells never took a team to back-to-back postseasons, except for the two times he did?

Three times.

Four teams to the playoffs, two rings, and 11-8 in the post-season. Plus 11 of his assistants went on to head-coaching gigs in the NFL.

The guy was a failure, totally.

And Tom Seaver never won the Cy Young award if you don't count his three Cy Young awards.

Yeah I know the circular nature of what I said, and no, not saying Tuna overall was a failure and shouldn't get HOF consideration, it's more to show the type of coach many hold to be the greatest in NY football history was as compared to Ryan in terms of attitude after abrupt ends to seasons and the ability to bring a team back to that level the next season.

I think what it shows is that trying to make a point by comparing the records of one coach who led four different teams across, what, 15 seasons or so, with one who coached one team over 2 seasons is a really, really bad idea.
