Who sucks more? (a tough choice)

Cablevision or Disney? No channel seven up here in the 'boibs. Cablevision says they pay them $200 million a year, Dizzyknees wants $240 mil, Cablevision says they pay enough and more than they do to better rated networks. It's a toss up, one sucks BHMC while the other is doing BHMB's.

Re: Who sucks more? (a tough choice)

I'm a Cablevision "customer" too and I have no Channel 7, there is a way you can reconfigure your TV to get 7 "free over the air" ?, if I took out my HDMI cable and out the outside cable right into the TV would that do it?.....or as Cablevision suggests in an email you need to go buy an antenna to do that?

Re: Who sucks more? (a tough choice)

Apparently Cablevision didn't get the memo from the government, along with the million commercials last year - analog TV is dead. You can't get any kind of signal from antennas anymore.

Re: Who sucks more? (a tough choice)

On Charter Cable in Connecticut, we get ABC shows on both channel 7 (NY) and channel 8 (CT). I'll gladly give you one of ours (both actually. I rarely watch anything on ABC). For FREE! All you have to do is figure out how to get them. Later

Re: Who sucks more? (a tough choice)

They both suck. I don't know anything about the fees a cable company pays to a network, so I hope I don't sound ignorant, but: ABC runs ads that says they currently get NO money from Cablevision, and want a piece of the pie NOW dammit! Yet Cablevision counters that by saying they already pay $200 Million to ABC (as Kong points out above), and ABC wants more NOW! So who is twisting the facts here? I find it hard to believe that ABC doesn't get any money from Cablevision. Not that I'm any great fan of Dolan and his crew. Also, what is ABC's standing with other cable companies? How much do they get from the Time Warners, Comcasts, etc, and how does that compare with what they take in from Cablevision? Doesn't affect me much, since I can watch Lost on line, so other than that, I don't really watch much ABC.

Valad: analog TV is dead. You can't get any kind of signal from antennas anymore. <<< They're suggesting a digital antenna, Smarty Marty. Like I'm going to go to Radio Shack so can watch channel 7. The whole internet, tv, phone situation in this country is out of fucking control. We have more choices than ever and everything still costs way too much. I'd like to kick Dolan in the cunt and I'd even slap Mickey Mouse around if I saw him on the street. Boo.

I'm having a hard time sorting it out too but I think that Cablevision pays Disney $200 million but local ABC here in NYC wants an additional $40 million. I think.

My first shock was the amount of money ABC gets paid from a single carrier , wow, I guess that's the norm ...so each carrier might be paying them that amount?....a lot of money for some quality shit they show.

Re: Who sucks more? (a tough choice)

Just so you know Online: A spokeswoman for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says, "There are no sites that can legally stream the ceremony [and] as yet, the Academy has not sold the rights for the show on the Internet." In the meantime, check out this site, which streams an ABC signal in real time: www.channelsurfing.net/watch-abc.html. Will it show tonight's Oscars ceremony as it happens? We won't know until showtime. Also, check out live channel Justin.TV. I guess this might have caused a real uproar if it were CBS and it happened Superbowl Sunday.

I have no interest in The Oscars, but I guess if you're gonna play a card Donald Duck, et al played a good one.

The timing is a huge piece of this, just the way it was with Food Network and their special Iron Chef featuring Michelle Obama on January 3. They both suck, though.

Re: Who sucks more? (a tough choice)

Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) said in a statement Sunday morning that he isn't picking sides in the dispute but is frustrated with negotiation breakdowns that trickle down to consumers. "When pulling a signal becomes the nuclear option in negotiation, it inflicts collateral damage on consumers who pay their bills and have done nothing wrong," Kerry wrote. Last week, he urged the FCC to help the companies reach an agreement. "Someone needs to be speaking up for them in this dispute and those like them."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 01058.html You'd think that technological advances would've already broken the monopolies of cable TV providers, and that by now, consumers could pick and choose and even change their source of transmission on a moment's notice. Prices would come down too.

Re: Who sucks more? (a tough choice)

Congress "fixed" the problem of cable monopolies a number of years ago -- which at least partially explains why it's so screwed up today. There's not much the consumer can do from the ABC side except call/write them about how you're never going to watch another one of their shows again. They'll probably thank you for your call and then snicker at you after they hang up. With Cablevision you can threaten to bolt to satellite or FioS (and take your internet & phone business with you) unless they come up with some other concession: free movie channels, reduced rates, extended discounts, whatever. If you've got legit competition in your area this tactic is worth a shot anyway; these giants want your business and are usually willing to make a deal to keep it. With a "crisis" like this happening right now it gives you even better leverage.

They do both suck. I have this same regards towards Time Warner and the NFL Network/NFL Red Zone channel. F' them for not giving me the choice of purchase, the fooks.

Re: Who sucks more? (a tough choice)

Yes, they both suck. But it seems like every time there is a fallout like this, Cablevision is somehow in the middle of it. Not to say that it's necessarily their fault, and certainly not to absolve the other party, but was YES vs. Cablevision, Time Warner vs. Cablevision, and now Mickey vs. Cablevision. You gotta wonder.

Re: Who sucks more? (a tough choice)

It doesn't matter who's at fault (both of them), because the customer should never be brought into these fights. We're being used as pawns and in the end it's _us_ that will end up paying. And it's not just ABC. Fox did it in January. Food Network, I'm sure NBC and CBS will take a look at their books and see if they can start something, or they'll look at the 'deal' ABC gets and think "well, we're a better network right? we should be getting at least that." Fiance's annoyed she's gonna miss Grey's Anatomy, but if we don't watch online I'll just torrent it and burn it to a DVD to watch on the bigger tv. Baseball's on every night soon anyway. I only need FOX, CW11, SNY and ESPN.
