Is there a reasonable scenario where Figgy makes the team as a long reliever?

[quote="Benjamin Grimm":tnb0akaw]Is there a reasonable scenario where Figgy makes the team as a long reliever?[/quote:tnb0akaw] Reasonable? Of course. Likely? Probably not. The Mets FO wants what it wants-- rightly or wrongly-- and having a cheap, rubber-armed, fan-favorite league-average starter-- and with a 4.2ish FIP, that's what he's been-- in the bullpen is apparently not a high priority.

They brought him along this far, Mr. Know-It-All.

Four-zip, Metzkowiczes, including a two-run double by Wrightly.

Sure. Bucks are cheap.

And that's what I get for faith and believance, as Figgy ends his run of perfection with Florida netting a four-spot in the third.

Frayed Knot Mar 26 2010 12:05 PM Re: IGT, 3/26, Let's go, Figgy |
Well Figgy has no options left and, unlike last season, he has a recent enough record of big league success to refuse a demotion even if he were going to pass through waivers which itself is less likely for the same reason. That all limits their choices to: keep him, lose him, or trade him. - I can't believe they'd be content to simply lose him, not knowing how thin their pitching is overall and in light of the (however limited) success he had last season plus his work this spring. - Trading him is an option but teams know that at this time of year those being dangled as trade bait are there because their team has no spot for them so they'll just wait it out until the deadline rather than cough something up in return. He's the biggest question mark remaining IMO.

Jenrry Mejia coiming in for a bases-loaded bailout against Jector Luna as Figueroa gets the jook.

Not for nothing but a lot of teams right now are struggling with the same questions about different guys. The Figger's proven pretty hard to get rid of though.

why is mlb.com gameday so slow to update?

Benjamin Grimm Mar 26 2010 12:16 PM Re: IGT, 3/26, Let's go, Figgy |
It does seem pretty clear that he's not slotted for that number 5 spot. (Niese wins the job with a 6.00 ERA! What a season this is shaping up to be!) But given the undeniable shakiness of the starting rotation (at least 80 per cent of it, anyway) it would be foolish to waste Figueroa, because he could very well be needed. I'd prefer to keep him around in the bullpen at least through April, even if it means that somebody like Green or even Parnell has to spend some time in Buffalo.

so, apparently, meija allowed all his inherited runners to score + 1 according to a very slow updating of mlb.com. first batter he faced, double. second batter he faced got a single and then caught in rundown trying to take 2nd.

Alas, I think Figgy undid in one inning everything positive he had done this spring up to that point.

It's weird. I mean, if you've got unsettled position battles, don't you want as many available PAs or IP to feed into your data set?
|
Edgy DC Mar 26 2010 03:06 PM Re: IGT, 3/26, Let's go, Figgy |
The thinking is that they've got X amount of guys scheduled to pitch, and X (or X+1) amount of guys ready to pitch, and no changing that variable once it's assigned.
