Shopping Sarge Jr.

Interesting nugget below from Joel Sherman of the Post. I think the Mets would love to deal for more bullpen help and Mike Lincoln of the Reds has "8th-inning stuff" (throws in the 90s) but recently bombed out of the 5th starter competition in Cincy and is coming off neck surgery so who knows. I'd prefer Nick Masset if they're selling setup men.

Gary Jr. is having a very good spring, you gotta hand it to him.

Two major league officials told me the Mets are shopping Gary Matthews Jr., and the Reds could be a possibility.

It is interesting that the Mets are looking to deal a player they just obtained during the offseason. The Angels wanted to deal Matthews because he represented a huge financial blunder and because word was that he had become so disenchanted by not playing regularly that the team found him a distraction.

Maybe the Mets are anticipating the same problem. Matthews was obtained as insurance after Carlos Beltran went for knee surgery and with the Mets constantly worried about the health of Angel Pagan. But they always believed that Pagan would receive the bulk of playing time as long as he was healthy, and he is healthy now. So Matthews is looking at being a reserve again. In addition, perhaps this means the Mets are internally receiving positive feedback about Beltran’s rehab and anticipate him coming back sooner (say late April, early May). In that scenario, Matthews’ role would all but evaporate. So maybe they are being proactive to find out where they can send Matthews, who they are only paying $1 million in each of the next two seasons since the Angels ate the majority of his contract to make the deal.

One other note on the Mets and center field: There have been a lot of calls for them to put Fernando Martinez there. But Mets officials privately do not feel he can handle the position any longer. If he could then they certainly would put him there. It would serve them best. Not only because he would be a strong option while Beltran is gone, but also because he would increase his value for a potential trade if Martinez showed he could still play center field at least adequately.

Re: Shopping Sarge Jr.

Sarge Jr. has shown he still has something left in the tank this Spring. If they feel that they can trade him, it might be relatively easy, since his old team is picking up a large portion of his salary.
And if they feel Figueroa isn't going to make the team (and I hope they're wrong), he and Jr. could bring back a better player then one of them alone.

They really should give him one at bat before trading him just so he gets as much of a chance as he did the first time he was here.

Maybe we can get Brian Stokes back. [hits head on desk repeatedly]

Funny , if he were still here would he be pegged as the elusive 8th inning guy?

It's early yet. Maybe the Mets will end up trading Matthews for Albert Pujols or something.

How do you figure? Gary Matthews Jr is having an even better spring.

You people and your reflexive Met hatred.

If Stokes were here he'd be no more in the mix than Kiko Calero. I'm thinking maybe Nieve can be our man.

We don't need him though , not with the guys we can throw out on a daily basis at 1st base.

Besides, Albert would be blocking Ike by next year and we wouldn't want that.

I guess I'd be a sucky GM then, if I'd trade Gary Matthews even up for Albert Pujols.

Have you seen how many walks that guy takes? You don't want such a low-effort guy in your lineup.

You don't deserve Backpack Girl.

This story broke ten days ago and Cincy sourcestried to kill it.

Yet it rises again. It's zombie trade talk that just won't die.
