Meet Me By The Apple

The Metness Protection Program continues to emerge, as the Mets move the beloved Shea Home Run Apple from the shadows of the desolate Bullpen Plaza out onto Mets Plaza. A photo, taken by one of the diligent baseball-fever posters, is featured on several blogs today, MetsBlog among them.

As for the aforementioned BPB (which couldn't feel further from Citi Field despite technically being inside Citi Field), they seem to be in the process of installing monitors so revelers and stragglers alike can follow the game up on the field.

Always seemed to me they just put the apple there because it was out of the way. Dark & hard by the chop shops, although someday, probably a second grand entrance.

I went to four games last season and never made it over the the old apple, now it's right there when you walk up. It's sure to be a big gathering spot.

I'm more than a bit concerned that the apple (and even the new hat fragment) aren't made of materials that can withstand the human contact it'll get in a high-traffic area.

Re: Meet Me By The Apple

On both my visits to Citi Field last year, my kids and I lined up to pay homage to The Apple, and to get photographed standing next to it. The problem was that the left side of the Apple (at least, for day games) was brightly lit, and the right side was in heavy shadow. It didn't really make for a great photo op. My solution would have been to put some kind of light source up above the Apple to the right. This idea seems better.

Well done. When I heard one of the security supervisors say that the home run apple wasn't going to be in the bullpen area last year, I feared the worst. I'm glad I was wrong.

Like the Mets, the Apple is made of stern stuff.

Or Stearns stuff.
