You could have some knee pain That could stop you in your tracks You could have a ligament fraying And a bad arthritic back
All you do is call me I'll hurt anything you see
You could have a groin ripper Going up and down, all around the bends You could have a scar tissue, scarring The abusement never ends
I want to swing a sledgehammer At a tractor tire Oh let me swing your sledgehammer This will be my physical therapy |

I'd like to hear Lee Mazzilli call the speed skating. |
I'd love to hear Joe Morgan call speed skating...
Joe: "That skater there, he's going pretty fast."
Jon Miller: "Well, yes he is, Joe."
Joe: "Well you know, when I played the game, guys respected the game. What happened in the clubhouse stayed in the clubhouse."
Jon: "Some great players in that clubhouse."
Joe: "Bench, Perez, Pete, of course. Johnny Bench was pretty fast. Well, fast for a catcher. Now I don't know how fast that skater is, because the game has changed from when I played. But the thing about Bench was that he could hit, too."
Jon: "And rumored to be gay, too. But that's like the figure skaters. These speed skaters, you don't hear those kinds of things."
Joe: "Well we didn't call it that back then. But it stayed in the clubhouse. Of course our uniforms were tight, but not as tight as the ones these skaters are wearing."
Jon: "Some great uniforms."
Joe: "Houston. I came up with Houston, you know. Those uniforms, I didn't care for. Of course we played indoors in Houston, sort of like this place these skaters are racing. But it was hot in Houston.
Jon: "AstroTurf."
Joe: "You couldn't skate on that. We barely were able to play ball on it, and we had some great players in Houston. We didn't skate much. And if a guy did, some of the veteran players would sit him down and talk to him. It was all done quietly, keep it in the clubhouse."
Jon: "That Finnish skater, the way he makes that turn, reminds me of Derek Jeter."
Joe: "Well Jeter, he could make that turn and make it look so easy that people think it's a routine turn. But trust me, it's not that easy."
Jon: "Derek Jeter would just take command there on the ice."
Joe: "Well, it would be Jeter's team. Other stars could come, like ARod, but it's still Derek Jeter's team."
...sorry guys. I'm having Sunday Night Baseball flashbacks. Must be all the snow and the ESPN rants from the other forums.... |

On the bright side, Johan can start the game and applause can fall on him like soft rain, and Klap called for with Rivera in 2008. |
Klap is prepared to prove you wrong three years down the line.
This Tuesday, the Mets get their chance to play the part of the Yankees and host the All-Star Game in New York City. It is the Midsummer Classic, and we know the word classic (much as with its root word "class") connotes Yankees and nothing else. Citi Field can only hope to distantly approach the majesty of Yankee Stadium in its final go-round in 2008. We know the Mets' humble boutique ballpark cannot match, let alone surpass it.
But there is one aspect of the All-Star Game through which Citi Field can make an indelible imprint on the sport the way the original cathedral in the Bronx did five Julys ago when Yankee Stadium graced baseball by simply being Yankee Stadium:
Have Mariano Rivera start for both teams.
We all know, World Series hosting rights notwithstanding, that the All-Star Game remains an exhibition. What better talent to exhibit than Mariano Rivera's? What better New York treasure to put on display for a national and international viewing audience? What better idenity to give an All-Star game hosted by the Mets than that of a Yankee legend?
Nothing instantly says New York City All-Star Game better than Mariano Rivera. He is, at once, a municipal and planetary treasure. This unprecedented gesture, to hand him the ball in the top of the first and then again in the bottom of the first will testify to baseball's awareness of his -- and the Yankees' -- status above the pantheon of athletic competition.
The Mets must do the right thing and withdraw their representative from the National League team to make room for the Great Rivera on the Senior Circuit roster. It would be unworthy of a team that plays so close to Yankee Stadium to do otherwise.
The long-range weather forecast is still uncertain for Tuesday night. MLB crosses its fingers for clear skies. But should baseball do the right thing and declare its all-world reliever who is still going strong at 43 starting pitcher for both the American and National leagues, the clearest element in the Citi Field atmosphere will be the presence of soft rain...and not just from the heavens giving their tearful approval to this most appropriate decision. |

I'm still kind of appalled that snowboarding is an Olympic sport. |
Kathy Lee Gifford said (on her TV show) that she and husband Frank (the ex-footballer and longtime TV sportscaster) were watching the snowboarding. He asked "What the heck is that?" |
I suspect Frank looks at a microwave oven and asks, "What the heck is that?", so he might not be the best gauge here. |
