Raul Valdes

Jerry remarks in the papers this morning that this guy -- a nonroster invitee who last pitched professionally for AA Bingo in 2007 -- could be the guy who frees up Feliciano to be more of a generalist/8th inning guy.

I'd been wondering who he was for a while, wearing No. 96, and still getting innings along with the rest of the relievers. Turns out he's a Cuban who washed out of the Cubs org, went to the independent leagues, then to the Mets who later released him, but invited him back after seeing him in winter ball. Apparently he's on loan with a Mexican League team a la Ricardo Rincon; we'd likely stash him there if he doesn't make the cut.

He's yet to give up a run in 4 appearances.

One of those guys who looks half defeated even as he releases the pitch.

(Check out the palmy grip with the fingers flaring in photo 1. Hey, Raul, people in space can see you're throwing the change.)

I'll go with "resigned." (Less Heilman/Innis, more Orosco/Leach.)

F'real-- it's so telegraphed, you might almost think it's a trap. You half-expect his pickoff move to start off with him yelling, "HEY, I'M-A THROWIN' IT OVER THERE IN A MINUTE!"

Middling K/9, no huge GB-y tendencies. Plus, the guy's had major swings in his efficiency, as his wildly-waving seasonal WHIP numbers seem to indicate. If he's having trouble keeping low-to-mid minor leaguers off the basepaths at age 29-30, I'm not sure what ChinPubes McCacklingPressConference is seeing here, unless he's got minor league splits available to him, or he's seeing a 33-year-old retread with sadface.

If he doesn't, he can go back to growing my coffee beans.

Why not?
He'd certainly leave his mark.
