Douchewear, Work Edition

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Mar 14 2010 08:13 PM

I'm gonna hafta get a new suit or two. Last bought one prolly 10+ years ago.

I need them for occasional work appearances and my inevitable next job search. For the purposes of this thread, let's pretend I don't have any suits and not that much $$, at least for this kinda crap.

What's the strategy? Where to shop?

Re: Douchewear, Work Edition

Similar to you I never wear them, I needed one for a wedding last year and went to the Men's Wearhouse in Yonkers, for under $200 I got totally rigged out....didn't get shoes though...

edit- $300

Re: Douchewear, Work Edition

Seconded on Men's Wearhouse-- picked up a couple of suits and shirt/tie combos (including tailoring) for under $700 earlier this year.

If you feel like giving yourself a headache, you could also try Century 21 or Midtown sample sales-- more legwork, but slightly-to-much better craftsmanship.

Re: Douchewear, Work Edition

I would skip Mens Wearhouse and try Jos A. Bank instead. I think their stuff is both nicer and better quality but still won't break the bank.

Looks like they have a sale on their "Executive Suits" - first one is $199 and second one is $99.

I got marrried in saddle shoes, baby. And the only place I could find them was Jos. A. Bank.

Re: Douchewear, Work Edition

The one suit that I have was purchased for a job search... back in 1992!

I still wear it, as infrequently as possible. (The last time was for my grandmother's funeral a little over two years ago.) I had to get it altered for my bigger belly back in 2001, which inspired me to lose 44 pounds. The suit then became way too big, but I was able to solve that problem with a belt.

I'd also recommend peeking into quality places like Barney's and checking out the sale rack. You can get a good bargain, plus you get the high class treatment and assistance.

Re: Douchewear, Work Edition

I bought a couple of nice suits at Macy's last year for a pair of weddings I was invited to, and because it had been 10 years and multiple weight fluctuations since the last suit I had bought. I think for the two together (it was a buy one get one deal) I paid around $400.

And Macy's reminds me that you can also do well at Lord & Taylor's.

I work in the same building as Barney's co-op and they just had their warehouse sale. Even then their prices are ridonkulous. It is fun to go see what it feels like to wear a $3,000 coat.

Did the Macy's thing last time and went 1-for-2. One suit turned into dogshit right away. The second is still hanging in there but needs some company. I would tend to lean more to JA Bank over Men's Wearhouse, but the last time I visited one the salesman was all over me like a ... (wait for it) ... cheap suit.

I should go look at Syms, only I'm not an educmacated consumer.

Re: Douchewear, Work Edition

Yeah, Bank can get you quickly involved in some pretty uncomfortable relationships. But Men's Warehouse can be guilty in that regard also.

Didn't Mets-era Joe Torre do some TV spots for maybe an earlier middle-classy version of Barney's? Am I totally misremembering?

Are we comfortable with Jos A Bank's entry-level suit quality? It's a big step up to their next level, pricewise, so I wonder if its actually worth it.

I hear good things about Syms too. I think that's where I get some of mine (I don't actually purchase them myself).

If you've got a car, outlets are a good resource. If you don't mind not having the absolute latest style (I don't) check out the suit outlets at Woodbury (upstate on Rt. 87) or Secaucus.

Too bad you never played in Ebbetts Field.
You could have won one:

Of course, it probably would be out of style by now.

We went to a Burlinton's Coat Factory once and never again, pretty sure there were suits there too but the place was such a mess , we left rather quickly. It was the store in Yonkers if anyone cares.

I get a good deal of shat at Jos A. Bank. I have to say, though, that you need to check out Kohl's. The suits, for part-time use, aren't bad. Most of my shirts come from there and the store-brand dress shirts, croft and barrow, hold up pretty well.

Filene's and Loehmann's and Century 21 -- it's hard to tell exactly what you're getting. Sizes and styles are limited. Though you can find bargains there, I might need some fit advice too. Hmmm.

Re: Douchewear, Work Edition

I know how you guys were all clamoring for an update, the good news is today is your lucky day.

I went first to Jos A Bank, tried on a few, got the size right. There I decided I preferred the "signature" to the "executive" (that's 1 step from entry level, better fabric look & feel) but was disappointed in the in-stock selection of colors/patterns in that style in my size. I walked out when the salesman turned his back to me.

Crossed the street to Men's Wearhouse, again encountrered the proverbial "cheap suit" salesman who directed me to selections in the size with the biggest inventory, not the size I'd just been fitted to at JAB. Walked out suspiciously.

Figured then Bank was what I wanted, but shopped instead on-line so as to find the best variety of colors/patterns in my size. Then it was a matter of waiting till the right sale comes along. They are ALWAYS doing some sort of promotion there, but many of them are built on the idea that you need 2 (or 3!) suits, or a suit and shirts, ties, etc. This is where I figured out their whole pricing game: a suit only costs what it says on the price tag when used as part of a Buy 1, Get 1 (or get 2) deal; sale prices decrease when combined with the fewest "extra" offers; the promotions are almost always calibrated to goose sales in one line or the other, but rarely both at once; if you don't like the deal they are offering this week, wait till next sale, etc etc...

Finally they came around to making the offer I wanted: my suit at the lowest discount (the only bonus was one free tie). Shipping was free, and the Dominican tailor around the corner hemmed the pants for a few bucks. Now I'm looking sharp and didn't go broke or buy shit I didn't need.

Hurry up and lock into the $12.99 croft & barrow shirts at Kohl's. I bought 12 (no shit) broadcloth shirts today. Plus I got a $30 gift certificate for purchasing more than $75 worth o'crap.

I like Sym's, the only one I've been to is in Elmsford/Greenburgh and
it's been there for freakin' ever. It's not the cleanest place in the world,
the sales people are even a tad moth eaten at times. But, I have never
walked out of there feeling like I got the clothing shaft. Usually, I'm going
out to the car thinking I can't believe I got this much stuff for $ xxx.xx.

The one time I wore red slacks in public as an adult, I ended up getting into a fight. I'm not necessarily implying a causative link, but there may be one there...

The office is going to undergo renovation. Until the work is complete, clothing restrictions have been relaxed. The only new rule - if you're going to wear shorts, no commando.
I'm starting to see Yankee shirts pop up daily.
I hope they finish the work soon.
