Any Good New Shows 2010?

The Pacific on HBO , debuted last night and I'll tune in again. It's what you'd expect from the team of Hanks and Spielberg , similar to Band of Brothers , the series is based primarily on memoirs of two Marines that fought in the Pacific against the Empire of Japan. It's on HBO so lots of cursing and blood and guts.....it's powerful stuff indeed. Guadalcanal, Okinawa and Iwo Jima are all battles that we know about and they are all here. The scene showing the newbies getting ready to land on the beach at Guadalcanal was just brilliant, very intense. I'll not spoil it here though.

I always have trouble keeping everyone straight on those kind of shows. They did a couple of little intro pieces in the beginning supposedly to give the ones they're going to focus on a back-story of sorts, but once they all get military haircuts and spend the rest of the show under helmets and grime I'm barely able to distinguish one guy from the next. Not that I expect that to keep me from watching it - and I'll probably have less trouble as it goes on. Bill Gallo wrote a piece on it in Sunday's NYDN. He was there for much of that stuff (meaning the real thing, not the movie).

Really? A 10-part series? Can we just make a feature-length film?

That flash forward show looks possibly interesting. If reality tv is your thing, I'm really excited about the 49th season of this show based out of Flushing, NY.

well, the first few episodes of flash forward were a few hours wasted for me, but have at it if you must. its a very promising, intriguing concept that falls flatly upon its face...

The problem with 'Flash Forward' is that if you're just about to pick it up you're already a half-season late. It was a new show in the fall that is just coming back from what seems like a 42 week hiatus. OK, it's probably more like 15 weeks but that's still a long freakin' break and even though I was following it back before they broke right sometime around Thanksgiving week I don't know that I'm going to go back to it simply because it's been so long. And the networks wonder why they're losing audiences.

Joseph Fiennes and John Cho are piss poor , granted they don't have much to work with, plus I can't get Harold & Kumar out of my head when I see Cho.

I had originally meant to watch the show..and just missed it I guess. Then I saw the previews recently, which gave me no indictation that they were picking up anything from a mid-point, and just assumed I hadn't missed it. Oh well.

Joseph Fiennes plays his part with such intensity that it's laughable.

The Discovery Channels "Life" , premiered Sunday night with two episodes. Oprah is the narrator and the show is the worse for it. For me a great narrator helps build the show , some ones I enjoy are Liev Schreiber , David Ogden Stiers and the voice from "Frontline" , Sigourney Weaver I thought was great in "Planet Earth" while Pierce Brosnan not so great in "Blue Planet". Oprah though is absolutely terrible in "Life" , it shouldn't really matter a whole lot but I find myself constantly distracted from the show because of her.

Re: Any Good New Shows 2010?

i also find the writing for "Life" to be unbearable. "the [snake that likes to eat horned lizards] approaches his prey. the horned lizard puffs up to make himself appear too large to eat, then does something unexpected. he flips over and plays dead. the snake has never seen anything like this before!" really? that snake, that likes to eat horned lizards, and was hunting for horned lizards, and lives around horned lizards, has never, ever seen a horned lizard employ its characteristic defensive maneuver? i find that impossibly hard to believe. i find it more plausible that the snake has evolved not to risk eating a dead lizard, and the lizard has evolved to mimic a dead lizard to avoid getting eaten. the snake surely has seen this before, but chooses not to run the risk of making himself sick, and not that the snake is so flabbergasted that the lizard could flip over, that he's all confused, and begins to question his very place in the whole food chain.

The new FX show, Justified, has gotten good reviews. I haven't seen it yet, but it's in my TiVo and we'll probably watch it this summer.

I watched the first episode and really liked it. Timothy Olyphant (Sheriff from "Deadwood") as a current-day US Marshall who settles things like the mighta in the old west. Thumbs up.

Re: Any Good New Shows 2010?

"Life" was pretty underwhelming. The "Planet Earth" series a few years ago was pretty much the same thing. I got more out of "Atlas 4D" which kicked off last night. I tried to power through the 13 episodes of the 2nd season of "Breaking Bad" on DVD in time to be able to watch the 3rd season live this year (the 3rd season started Sunday night on AMC), but I didn't make it...so I'll be watching season 3 over a couple of weekends at this time next year. It's a pretty great show. For some reason the previous season's DVD comes out 5 days before the new season starts. What's that all about?

Re: Any Good New Shows 2010?

Breaking Bad with Emmy wiiner Brian Cranston started up Season three Sunday. For those who have watched and missed the opener, the episode really just began to set up the season. Easy to watch episode 2 and not feel left behind.
