Beat me to it. To clarify: we're going by his performance, without thought-- or with as little thought given as possible-- to the overall quality of the film?

I think so. I've got to think at least part of what people like about Murray is his ability to subvert the very vehicle he's riding in. Transmonk is already on the board!

In rough order of primacy (though you could shuffle the top 3 in any order, and I wouldn't argue): Rushmore Groundhog Day Ghostbusters Lost in Translation Scrooged Tootsie Broken Flowers Caddyshack The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Quick Change (I've heard good things about his work in Where the Buffalo Roam, but have never gotten around to seeing it.)

Big Quick Change fan here. He was vurray Murray in that. I'm going to have to chew on that a bit.

I so very want Kingpin somewhere in here, but I can't figure out what to bump from my 10. Other near-misses: Cradle Will Rock Hamlet Mad Dog and Glory Stripes

Re: Bustin' Makes Me Feel Good

Yeee... I've only seen six of them! Here's how I'd rank them: Tootsie (1982) Groundhog Day (1993) Ghost Busters (1984) Ed Wood (1994) Ghostbusters II (1989) Caddyshack (1980) I don't remember much at all about Ghostbusters II, but I have to rank it above Caddyshack, which I hated.

Re: Bustin' Makes Me Feel Good

Murray's interesting. Like, he's kinda an unnecessary scene chewer in Caddyshack but a total force of nature all the same. I think he's classic Murray in Stripes -- a smart-ass underachiever from Chicago out to subvert the establishment. Stripes Quick Change Rushmore * Ghostbusters Caddyshack Groundhog Day Fantastic Mr. Fox Kingpin * Royal Tennenbaums Life Aquatic and/or Lost in Translation (never saw Scrooged)

[quote="John Cougar Lunchbucket":3gmnya6f](never saw Scrooged)[/quote:3gmnya6f] Rent it next holiday season. It's a "classic" Murray role and it's got a pretty nice supporting cast. It's become one of my favorite Xmas-time films.

Re: Bustin' Makes Me Feel Good

What is the impetus for this? As far as I can see he didn't die yesterday. This was hard. 'Groundhog Day' is the clear winner for me but after that they are all close. 'Tootsie' sticks out because of the memorable line when he called Dustin Hoffman a slut. 'Stripes' and 'Caddyshack' are classics. So many great lines. They're all great. He's great. I hope he's not dead. 1. Groundhog Day (1993) .... Phil 2. Tootsie (1982) .... Jeff Slater 3. Stripes (1981) .... John 4. Caddyshack (1980) .... Carl Spackler 5. Meatballs (1979) .... Tripper 6. Re: Bustin' Makes Me Feel Good

1) To me, that's classic early-period Murray. You can argue that he's at his peak there in Ghostbusters, or Stripes, or Quick Change (as Edgy might argue). But to limit your consideration of Billy there is to sell him EXTREMELY short. If you-- as I do-- buy that it's tougher to make a pretty good comedy than it is to make a great drama, you could make a real argument that he's the most complete actor of our time. 2) Loved him in Lost in Translation. Didn't love the movie. (One of the big reasons I asked the question at the outset of this thread.) 3) And those of you who've left Rushmore or Broken Flowers off your lists, I hope it's 'cause you haven't seen 'em. 4) Upon further consideration, I might consider bumping QC to, say, #5 on my list. He's VERY Murray there.

Re: Bustin' Makes Me Feel Good

This is what we've got so far: 1 Ghost Busters 2 Groundhog Day 3 Caddyshack 4 Stripes 5 Rushmore 6 Scrooged 7 Tootsie 8 Quick Change 9 Broken Flowers 10 What About Bob? The groundhog is easily outpolling the gopher and the slimer on completed ballots, but it was left completely off the last two.

Haven't seen 'Broken Flowers', I'll put it on my Netflix queue. Saw 'Rushmore' and remember liking it. I remember Schwartzman more than Murray though. I'll have to watch that again as well.

Re: Bustin' Makes Me Feel Good

The challenge of Murray is that he has to make you wrestle: is his snorting comtempt the vox populi? Is he subverting the system on my behalf? Does he speak for me or is he just an asshole? And if he is, am I? In Quick Change, even his castmates seemed to be unsure on the hero/asshole question. Near the end of the film, he was unsure himself.

Re: Bustin' Makes Me Feel Good

He's essentially the same character in a lot of his movies -- but I like the character, so it's OK. My son liked him in the zombie movie. Scrooged is wonderful -- if you like Murray. I do, so it's a fave.

I saw Bill Murray at the Troubadour the other night and that's what got me thinking about him. For the record, most celeb-type peeps at that bar go upstairs and not mix with the riff-raff, but Bill hung out at the bar all night, meeting peeps, hugging chicks, and waiting in line for a drink like the rest of us schlubs. Seemed alright by me. Rushmore Stripes Ghostbusters Lost in Translation Groundhog Day What About Bob Kingpin The Royal Tenenbaums Caddyshack Scrooged

A big problem I have with him is the clown he plays for TV when at a charity golf tourney.....there goes Bill again using the clubs like a sword......running across the greens...never saw him to that before.

Caddyshack Rushmore Groundhog Day Lost in Translation Stripes The Razors Edge Murray's characters in Rushmore & Groundhog day are similarly conflicted so I'll with Caddyshack which has a nice turn Brian Doyle Murray as the caddymaster who calls in a bet on the MFY's in his "office' That scene has since been deleted

Can it be that I have not seen a Murray movie since 1998? Makes sense, as I had my first kid in '99 and my movie-going has been very sporadic. Wow, I haven't even [u:1x3k2sky]seen [/u:1x3k2sky]ten of these. I do think you all may be giving him short shrift for Ed Wood.
