I haven't been voting in recent years because of my work schedule. I don't get to see most of the games and I can't get a full picture just from the box scores (e.g.- game saving defensive plays).
|
metsmarathon Mar 30 2010 10:01 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
mlb.com (and therefore mets.com) has video highlights from each game. if there's a defensive highlight, it'll show up there. in fact, i use this as an additional source of data for my own voting. you make the defensive highlight, you get 2 extra 'marathon points'! conversely, if your blunder was so egregious that you make the highlight reel (which is pretty rare, really), you lose 2 marathon points!

No. I figure that most people vote at work (!) so I don't count days like Memorial Day or July 4 in the two-business-day rule.

In game two, wasn't Bay the guy? Two walks, a double, and two runs scored. He had a very similar line to Wright's, only better. Yet folks aren't really putting him ahead of the pack.
|
Benjamin Grimm Apr 08 2010 11:17 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
Nine voters so far for that game, and three have voted a tie among two or more players for most points. For the other six, two have awarded the most points to Bay, two to Cora, and two to Castillo.

m.e.t.b.o.t. Apr 09 2010 07:54 PM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
m.e.t.b.o.t. has unexpectedly voted metropolitan centerfielder gary matthews, jr., to be the schaefer player of the game for the second game of the 2010 baseball season. this is a direct result of a peculiarity which had previously not come to m.e.t.b.o.t.'s attention. if a baseball umpire calls a balk against a pitcher, then the lead base runner is assigned the change in win probability. the assumption, therefore, is that the lead base runner has done something to disrupt the pitcher, or that the pitcher was intending to deceive the lead base runner.
|
Edgy DC Apr 09 2010 08:14 PM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
Yeah, I was 'fused, seeing the b.o.t voting for a guy to win who I didn't even include in the field.

Edgy DC Apr 12 2010 11:33 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
I was trying to find a new way to express how we're over-valuing less-than-excellent pitching performances after viewing the thread representing the PotG poll for the Mets last victory. This 8-2 victory featured six innings of two-run ball by starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey and two players going deep twice, including the starting catcher.

Not that I disagree with the larger point, but if rarity equaled value, then Eric Bruntlett should have been the Phils' MVP last year.

metsmarathon Apr 12 2010 12:09 PM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
|
well, you could always look at run expectancy...
so francoeur basically contributed 2.5 times what pelfrey did, and barajas doubled up pelfrey. it would appear that the going rate for a pitcher is that he should be expected to allow 0.48 runs per inning pitched. allowing 2 runs in 6 innings puts him at 0.89 runs below the expected 6 * 0.48 = 2.88 (we'll assume it rounds up to 2.89). y'know, it would be interested if somebody would craft up a 'bot specifically to provide schafer voting based on run expectancy... such voting would probably look like this: francoeur 2.66 barajas 2.08 wright 0.84 pelfrey 0.82 tatis 0.6 takahashi 0.6 nieve 0.6 mejia 0.6 cora 0.47 tejada 0.47 pagan 0.27 or, possibly like this: francoeur 3.5 barajas 2.75 wright 1.11 pelfrey 1.08 tatis 0.78 takahashi 0.78 note: in my discussion above, i forgot about pelfrey's negative contributions with the bat. voters tend to do that, i think. he cost the team 0.23 runs, giving him a net of only 0.66 RE24 for the game, which is clearly a lesser contribution than either francoeur or barajas made.

edgy, without getting too deep into your methodology, how are you giving so much love to perez? 4 earned, 4 walks, and 2 bequeathed runners in a 5.2 inning losing effort can't be almost double the next best guy, can it?
|
Edgy DC Apr 12 2010 02:41 PM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
I know, right? It came out that way and I'm checking my data. But a few upside contributing factors are: (1) he struck out six, (2) only eight baserunners is pretty good, and (3) going 1-2 with a two-out RBI, he was perhaps the team's most effective hitter, net.

When giving out points for the 20 inning marathon, keep in mind that your hitters scored two runs (all off fake pitchers) in 20 innings --- an average of 0.9 per game. The pitchers, on the other hand, managed a 0.45 ERA. Distribute the points accordingly.
|
Frayed Knot Apr 19 2010 07:43 PM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
I think I went 7/3 in my points for pitchers/non-pitchers and, even then, some of my non-pitcher points were for defensive purposes: Cora, Francoeur, Blanco
|
Edgy DC Apr 19 2010 07:54 PM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
Yeah, but, Francoeur also went like oh-for-50. His defensive contributions had to have been wiped out by all the outs he made, no?
|
Gwreck Apr 19 2010 09:41 PM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
I agree. Aside from Cora (who didn't have a lot of PAs), I don't think any non-pitchers were points-worthy.

I understand that you're only looking for conversation, but I've gotten the distinct impression in past seasons that your scrutiny seems to intimidate some people from voting. "Well, if I'm going to get ripped for giving Santana a 4 instead of a 2.83, why should I bother voting?"
|
G-Fafif Apr 20 2010 08:11 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
Have faith in your Crane Pool comrades to cast informed ballots even if they reach somewhat varied conclusions. They watch/know the Mets, too.
|
Edgy DC Apr 20 2010 08:20 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
I certainly have faith. I just think it's a worthy point of discussion. And I certainly don't mean to rip, but improve all of our votes through enlightened exchanges.
|
Benjamin Grimm Apr 20 2010 08:25 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
"Distribute the points accordingly" sounds a bit authoritarian. It would be better for you tell us why you voted the way you did without telling everyone else how to vote.
|
Edgy DC Apr 20 2010 08:36 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
Yes. And I've apologized twice, and I do so again sincerely. I certainly meant any authoritarian tone to be flip and ironic.
|
Benjamin Grimm Apr 20 2010 08:39 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
I know. And I'm in the awkward position of speaking for others based on a "feeling" that I've picked up. I may be completely off base here, and if so, then I apologize for that. I personally don't have any problem with your comments; I just get a bit discouraged when participation goes down. (And it's not because of my "hard work." Schaefer tallying literally only takes me a few minutes per day.)
|
themetfairy Apr 20 2010 08:43 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
|
Statements like this imply that you're criticizing others for votes that differ from what you would have us award. That your method is the right one and the rest of us should vote in line with your thinking. Maybe that's not how you intend it. But that's how it comes off.
|
Edgy DC Apr 20 2010 08:53 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
Criticizing, no. Disagreeing and raising it for discussion, yes. We do that in most every thread.
|
metirish Apr 20 2010 09:03 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
I know that last season I gave up on the voting partly because there was heavy handed criticism in this thread, well not this one but last years version. It's not that I can't take the criticism, and I don't exactly mean that I was getting hammered in here, I wasn't , but the overall tone in here made the voting a chore and not fun.
|
Edgy DC Apr 20 2010 09:05 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |

G-Fafif Apr 20 2010 09:14 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
E, I'm sure you're being passionate and conscientious, per usual, but I don't know what "improve" means other than "vote as I do." And that's the turn-off.
|

I feel the same way.
|
Edgy DC Apr 20 2010 09:23 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
So opinions are do-able, but back-and-forth not. Got it.
|
G-Fafif Apr 20 2010 09:34 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
I get the impression from your periodic urgings to remember this and not forget that that you think many of your fellow voters are just dopes who are distracted by shiny RBIs and don't get nuance the way you do. So yes, your use of "improve" does imply you've figured it out and we're all idiots.
|
Frayed Knot Apr 20 2010 09:45 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
|
But doing that would force him to explain his "system" at which point my head would explode.
|
Edgy DC Apr 20 2010 09:53 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
Come on. If I think you're a dope, I'll call you a dope. And if I think "improve" is a one-way street, I'll express it as such. And no, "improve" does not mean that when I said it in a way that clearly means the opposite.

Setting aside "tones" or perception of meaning (which can sometimes be hard to discern when reading words on the internet rather than hearing them spoken with inflection), I think that offering up opinions and having some disagreement in the discussion thread is a good idea.
|
G-Fafif Apr 21 2010 05:59 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
In the spirit of it's fun (goddammit) to discuss why we vote as we do, I threw a half-point Bay's way for two very good catches last night: a diving number against Soriano in the fifth when a no-hitter was still in progress and one he tracked down at the wall past the LF foul line off Fukudome, both recording an out and saving Igarashi one more pitch on the potentially bad hammy. I've also been inclined, in Pelfrey's last two excellent starts, to share some of his credit with Blanco as Pelf is quick to do the same.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Apr 21 2010 08:09 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
I also gave Blanco love for his terrific pickoff throw of Fontenot, a huge moment in a game that coulda gone either way, and for taking over the team lead in walks by a catcher with 1.

Gwreck Apr 26 2010 08:49 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |

I agree that a 5-inning win does not merit 10 points being handed out, especially when we consider 1. While pitching well, Pelfrey still only completed 5 innings (and was taken out after 5, as Valdes was in the game when the rain started); and 2. The offense didn't light the world on fire (1 run in 5 innings). I gave out 4.75 points and while I don't know if that's perfect, I certainly would think giving out more that 6 or 7 points to be excessive.

To my mind, last night's Mets worked 4 times as efficiently, W-L column-wise. Don't penalize the wasteless*, commie! *Not counting the 20 or so pitches by both starters that could have been called strikes, and were in fact called strikes when thrown in the same spot in previous innings. The other day I received a surprise review copy of 100 Things Mets Fans Should Know and Do -- or else they MUST DIE the other day. I noticed that this forum got a shout-out in section 81. (As did that other web site I'm involved in.) Silverman (has he ever visited us here, by the way?) made particular mention of the Schaefer awards. I thought it kinda neat that this rinky-dink little exercise, which only about ten or twelve people, at most, participate in, has been immortalized, so to speak, in a published volume.

Several people need to correct this in their voting in the 1st SD game (the 2-1 Met win). Schaefer POTG 6/8/10 - Mets 2, Padres 1 Yes it's obvious who you mean seeing as how only one Feliciano actually played in that game, but (for reminders and newbies) the tallying for this project is an automated process so you need to specify PFeliciano or JFeliciano. By the same token, there's only one Rodriguez on the squad so don't send the counting program into a frenzy looking for the Met whose name starts with FRodri... it won't find him.

To me, it was almost a push. Francoeur's blast was key when it came, but it was all he offered of value... and the fact that it came with two men on became diminished in importance-- in my mind-- as more runs came. Beltran not only got two hits-- one of which was a double-- but got on base another time (once working a walk off of Wainwright).
|
Edgy DC Jul 30 2010 08:56 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |

That doesn't quite sum it up for me. He went 2-3, with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. I don't know if I gave him any defensive credit, but to me, the biggest chunk of the difference was the fewer outs.

1. I know the rules say don't vote zero (I disagree with the rationale) so I voted a symbolic half-point to Pagan today.
I saw this in a voting thread -- I voted but realized after making the post that voting had already closed. I don't run the system and don't get to complain about the free service I utilize --so I will repeat my comment that I think voting closes much too quickly, particularly in the summer when people are traveling and may not be able to vote each game within 3 days.

4 hits and 2 walks. Don't get me wrong - he was superlative yesterday. But I want my 6.0 votes to go to something closer to perfection. I'm sure I gave Niese a 6.0 for his 1-hitter. I may have given out another 6.0 or two for a strong pitching performance in a game with no Mets offense to speak of. But generally, I want to hold off on awarding 6.0 unless it's something truly great.

Fair enough. But still... double-digit strikeouts leavens the six baserunners a bit, no? (As per ESPN, Niese notched a 91 GameScore for his one-hitter; Johan yesterday was an 87.)

Voting for Wednesday's game is due to close over the weekend, but since there are only six votes so far, I'll hold it open until Monday morning. If you want to vote for this game, please try to do so over the weekend.

Gwreck Aug 13 2010 09:07 PM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
Is tonight finally the night that somebody gets the perfect 6.0? Then again, if Niese couldn't get a 6.0 in his 1-hitter, I don't know how anyone else could.
|
themetfairy Aug 14 2010 05:17 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
I've given a few 6.0s out this year. Tonight was one of them. And Niese's 1-hitter was one of them.

Voting for Monday night's win in Houston will close on Thursday morning. This will be the final Schaefer tally before September. I leave for vacation tomorrow evening and won't return until September 4. In the meantime, please keep starting the threads and posting your votes. I may or may not pop in from time to time but I won't be doing any vote tallying.
|
Benjamin Grimm Aug 19 2010 08:04 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
Okay, that's it! (For now, anyway.) No more Schaefer tallying until September. When I get home from Europe, I'll start catching up. I'll paste the UMDB box scores, and then I'll start tallying games played since then, without any additional notices here. Please continue starting the threads (and please make sure to have "Schaefer" in the title so I can easily find them) and try to get your votes in before the voting threads slip too far off the first page and become forgotten.

Have a great trip!

Frayed Knot Aug 23 2010 07:26 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
For those of you who are normally given to voting in this project, try not to get too far behind just because Ben isn't here holding deadlines over our collective heads. Much easier to keep up with this stuff while it's still semi-current and (mainly because I just got caught up myself) all the recent games from both the Astros & Pirates series are either on page 1 or the very beginning of page 2.
|
Benjamin Grimm Aug 26 2010 12:25 PM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
Thanks, Frayed. It looks like the games of August 19, 20, and 21 are very light on votes, one of them has only four. They will close when I return to the USA, most likely with no further warning in this thread.

Only game I've missed in about six weeks. I'll try to get a vote in tonight.

I've always been of the mindset that if I didn't see/hear a majority-- or significant portion of the meaningful part-- of the game, that I'd politely decline to vote.

Voting for Tuesday's game, which has so far only received five votes, will close on Friday afternoon.
|
Benjamin Grimm Sep 10 2010 12:37 PM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
Even when the Mets win, nobody casts any Schaefer votes! Wednesday's win over the Mets has had only three votes so far. I know this season has become dreary, but with only about three weeks to go, I'll half-heartedly see this Schaefer stuff through to the end. Hopefully by April we'll once again be brimming with enthusiasm.

My computer is dying at home. I hardly have the patience to wait for the boxscores and video highlights to load via my "high-speed wireless internet service."

Despite very low vote counts (especially for Sunday's game, where only three people have participated) voting for the games played against Atlanta on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will all close on Wednesday morning. The end is near... let's see if we can see this thing through for just another couple of weeks.

Benjamin Grimm Sep 23 2010 06:48 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
We continue to pathetically stagger towards the finish line. Only the three most faithful voters (me, G-Fafif*, and metfairy*) have voted for Tuesday's loss to the Marlins, which will close tomorrow morning.

Wait. October games don't get hammered into the numbers for September's PotM? Does that mean we get a PotM for October's three games?
|
Benjamin Grimm Oct 04 2010 09:29 AM Re: 2010 Schaefer Voting Discussion Thread |
No. Any games played in March or October count only to season totals, but not to monthly awards.
