IGT April 4 Yanks/Sawx
Fman99 Apr 04 2010 07:58 PM |
Am I the only CPF'er so baseball starved to be watching these teams play? It is a baseball game that counts, after all. Having said that, I was bummed to find out that ESPN2's feed was being blacked out in favor of the stellar (read: shitacular) YES broadcast of the game. These guys' Yankee love gushing (shame on you, Al Leiter, for even hanging out with these hacks) makes a guy want to find a torso, dress it in MFY apparel and then fuck it with an ax handle. 5-1 Yanquis, bottom of the 5th.

Well, I think you picked the wrong end of the axe, but I'm watching as well. Michael Kay is an abomination.

Completely disinterested. I wasn't even aware, until now, that there was a game that I wasn't watching.

Sox rallying against [crossout:h72tav80]Patrice O'Neal[/crossout:h72tav80] CC Sabathia in the 5th, now 5-2, 2nd and 3rd 2 outs. Fenway crowd waking up.

Watching. Among the "highlights:" Al Yankazeera couldn't be bothered to show Pedro Martinez's ceremonial first pitch. Michael Kay welcomed us to Baltimore for the inaugural season of the "Baseall" season. Those are not typos.

Watching , although tuning out right now. The game is so boring YES keeps showing LeBron fucking James. Al did talk about his great effort in game 5 against the MFY's. I was at a BBQ today and ended up putting a front running no nothing "big yankee" fan in his place. The conversation turned to baseball and his opening salvo to me was " huh , the Mets are so cheap , they never spent money"....I ripped into him ever so subtly , then things got just a little heated when he still wasn't getting it. He's ending words were " uh , let's not talk baseball"...... yeah fuck you yankee bollox.

Watching. Sawx with a chance to get in it right now

2-run triple will do. Tying run on 3rd, CC Fatassia has one chance to escape vs. Ortiz here.

Chan Ho ! Ha, MFYs, meet your 7th inning guy.

Here's a question: why is this game being played at Fenway? Since this modern day "tradition" started to emerge over the last decade or so of having the defending champ being one of the teams in the opening Sunday Night slot, it seems to me that those in possession of the WS trophy have always been the home team ... I mean, I thought that was pretty much the point. Maybe my memory if off here but I doubt it - and at the same time I also can't help wondering if the Yanx asked that it not be at their place for some reason (like: 'we're the Yanx and we don't do night-time home openers' - or something like that) or agreed to a switch in exchange for some other schedule consideration.

Some brain-damaged MFY fans calling WFAN today were demanding a home game so they could raise the flags with the Sox watching. Don't much care about this myself.

Two Posada passed balls lets the tying run score from 2nd.

I think it might just be scheduling concerns in not having the Mets and MFYs playing at home during the same time. Also, the last time they were this situation (2005), the Red Sox opened in New York despite being defending champions. Note that the Red Sox' season-opening game in 2008 was played in Japan vs. Oakland.

I don't particularly care either, I just found it odd and - seeing how the Yanx are involved - wondered if there is/was an angle being played somehow. Actually the whole Yanx-v-BoSox sked is cock-eyed this season; all the games are crammed early and late with only 1 series between like mid-May and late-Sept Hey Jorge, the next pitch you glove cleanly this inning will be your first!

Frayed Knot Apr 04 2010 09:23 PM Re: IGT April 4 Yanks/Sawx |
I didn't see the beginning of this game and when it exactly started (may have been some pre-game stuff) - but the point is that they're either closing in on - or have already passed - the three-hour mark and there's still two innings to go. Yup. These two are in mid-season form already.

Forgot to mention that Angel Hernandez is umpiring at first base and already made his first terrible call of the year when he ruled that Mike Cameron was doubled-off first base in the 3rd inning (he was clearly safe).

That's what the Brewers were for.

Frayed Knot Apr 05 2010 08:19 AM Re: IGT April 4 Yanks/Sawx |
Yup! Not only blow up but accuse the league of conspiring against him. Now, in this modern era with 81 sellouts (or nearly so) for each of those teams, those things don't matter as much anymore. This season ends with those two teams facing each other in Fenway also.

metirish Apr 05 2010 08:22 AM Re: IGT April 4 Yanks/Sawx |
I have a question that I am sure FK can answer. Why was YES able to show the game when it was an espn national game, that's not standard form is it?
|
Benjamin Grimm Apr 05 2010 08:33 AM Re: IGT April 4 Yanks/Sawx |
ESPN is limited to televising each team five times per season on a Sunday night. They didn't want this game to count against their Yankee or Red Sock totals, so they allowed YES and NESN to broadcast it locally.
|
metirish Apr 05 2010 08:40 AM Re: IGT April 4 Yanks/Sawx |
So they could show them as many times as they want just as long as they let the locals in on it and those games don't count against their exclusive games?, that seems to be bending the rules to me or something.
|
Frayed Knot Apr 05 2010 08:47 AM Re: IGT April 4 Yanks/Sawx |
It's definitely bending the rules although I don't think you'll see it regularly. ESPN & MLB reached some sort of one-time agreement where the network got a ultra-high profile game for their Sunday Night Baseball opener while allowing the two local networks (both team-owned) to have the rights in their areas because it was opening day - er, night. And, yeah, while ESPN lost their two biggest markets for the game, the fact that they put it on ESPN2 and spent half the game telling the audience to switch over to their main focus of UCONN's streak versus the he-woman from Baylor kind of shows where their priorities are anyway.
|
Benjamin Grimm Apr 05 2010 08:52 AM Re: IGT April 4 Yanks/Sawx |
I suppose it is. It seems, though, that the reason for the rule is so that there's a limit on the number of local Sunday telecasts that ESPN can steal from each team, not because they want a lot of variety on Sunday nights.

And that tradition was good enough for about 100 years. I can see an AL opener in Boston, a traditional (as in old) AL franchise. But how about it being the first day game to start on day 2, Bud?
