IGT, Opening Day, 4/5/2010

Projected lineups, subject to change:
Florida

Coghlan, lf[/*:m]
Maybin, cf[/*:m]
Ramirez, ss[/*:m]
Cantu, 3b[/*:m]
Uggla, 2b[/*:m]
Ross, rf[/*:m]
Baker, c[/*:m]
Sanchez, 1b[/*:m]
Johnson, p[/*:m][/list:o]=#FF8000]New York

Pagan, cf[/*:m]
Castillo, 2b[/*:m]
Reyes, ss[/*:m]
Bay, lf[/*:m]
Wright, 3b[/*:m]
Murphy, 1b[/*:m]
Francoeur, rf[/*:m]
Barajas, c[/*:m]
Santana, p[/*:m][/list:o]
Cantu may end up back at first before long, but they don't really have too many good options. Gaby Sanchez has hit everywhere but the majors, so he's at the front of the line to grab a shot at first. With Jeremy Hermida gone, Cameron Maybin, Cody Ross, and soph sensation Chris Coghlan --- who shared time among them last year --- stretch out and try and make an outfield with the three of them. Good luck to them. But in this game, I predict they will all fall down, like toy soldiers.
Good luck to them. [/quote:2drvqkvo] I wish them nothing but poor luck. I find the Marlins to be generally insufferable and guilty of a multitude of sins, whether it was their classless actions on the last day at Shea, or Dan Uggla embarrassing the National League in the all-star game, or even Hanley Ramirez's inability to wear his hat straight. Screw them. I hope they go 19-143* this year. * If they can beat the Phillies each time they play -- that's fine by me.

Not having Beltran leaves that lineup looking rather thin. Opening Day last year had a stronger lineup perhaps? Reyes, SS Murphy, LF Beltran, CF Wright, 3B Delgado, 1B Church, RF Schneider, C Castillo, 2B Santana, P

The catchers aside, from last year to this, it's Delgado, Beltran, and Church replaced by Pagan, Francoeur, and Bay. So yes, I'd say it's a bit weaker.

Pagan is no Beltran, but big-picture-wise, I feel more confident in at least knowing what I can expect from Bay and Francoeur in 2010 than I did from Delgado and Church in 2009.

If this is indeed a Martika reference, then this is... ... the WORST IN-GAME THREAD POP CULTURE REFERENCE... IN THE WORLD. As to the lineup... once Beltran's back, it's kind of a push. We could, however, use someone who punishes righty pitchers; minus Delgado and Beltran, this bunch is looking mighty vulnerable against northpaws.

A lot of controversy around facts (and way too much bloodletting), but virtually all scenarios have Jose Reyes unavailalbe for opening day. Cameron Maybin and Cody Ross are each day-to-day with strained groins, presumably unrelated. Both are expected to be ready for the opener.

Still like that Mets lineup better than the Marlins. It's likely Reyes is out, I think the only way is if he's cleared via his test next week. SS is up in the air still. I think if Reyes is cleared before opening day to get into shape, it's Cora and Reyes only misses a week or two. If his levels haven't regulated yet, it may be Tejada or someone else as Reyes will likely miss most or all of April.

Wtih Logan Morrison optioned down, it is now pretty clear that Gaby Sanchez has won the opening day nod at first base, with Jorge Cantu at third. What remains to be seen is if Jose Reyes can sneak back in there for the Mets. I suspect he will.

Cody Ross and Brett Carroll look doubtful for opening day right now, so it looks like Jai Miller .(one career at-bat) or Bryan Petersen (zero career at-bats, went 1-4 yesterday against the Mets) could be in right. Emiliano Bonifacio (light-hitting centerfield backup) and Scott Cousins are also candidates.

Castillo should be preceding rather than following Pagan for the very same reasons that were stated here concerning Jose Reyes batting immediately ahead of Castillo. If Manuel can't follow through on his idea to bat Castillo leadoff with Reyes on the DL, then this idea probably ain't never gonna happen. It should.

Well, I wasn't posting what should happen, but what was likely to happen. I don't think Castillo should bat second either. But I don't think the announced "idea" was ever to bat Castillo leadoff --- even with Reyes hitting third --- but rather Pagan.

Because anytime you can bat your worst hitter-- and third-worst on-base-skills-guy-- first, and bat your second-best offensive player fifth-- not to mention starting Sargeant Misplay in center and "breaking up the righties"-- you've got to jump on that chance. 26th year here.

Jerry's obviously possessed by the spirit of Willie Randolph. Is there an exorcist in the house? I concede that the Mets are still dealing with problems, setbacks and some holes to fill before the season's even started, but they're not so depleted so as to justify Cora batting leadoff. Cora's most recent historical top ten similarity score comp is Desi Relaford and Desi wasn't no leadoff hitter. Not ever. I'm dumbfounded. (Unless Cora historically whales against the Marlins' opening day pitcher. ("Whales" instead of "wails". Marlins. Get it?))

Jerry came over to sign autographs near where I was at the workout day today. I actually got to converse with him for 30 seconds about the lineup and reminded him of how wrong it was to have Cora leading off. His response was that "Lui doesn't like leadoff." He gave me the Jerry laugh when I pointed out that I thought Castillo should do whatever helps the team the most.

On further review, slotting Castillo in the leadoff spot and shifting Cora either right behind Castillo or to the bottom of the order is merely slightly preferable to the announced Opening Day Lineup. That starting squad is indeed depleted and probably wouldn't win half of their games over the course of a full season, even with Santana turning in another All-Star caliber campaign. Half of the starting eight is dead wood or near dead wood I wouldn't bat Cora leadoff, but the larger point is that Jerry's been dealt a bad hand if he's expected to contend without Reyes and Beltran.

That. Seems also like Cora is getting the double courtesy of a veteran-gets-the-opener start since seems as if Jerry would prefer Tejada at SS or he wouldn't have flown him north.

I hope that's not the thinking behind Cora batting leadoff. Good managers don't squander anything. You'd think that an organization that twice in the last three years assembled strong teams that missed the playoffs by one game and were eliminated on the last day of the regular season would know better.

Ceetar, Its easy when you miss the playoffs by a game in a 162 game season to have a million "ifs" that should have gotten you into the playoffs. As for Manuel, I liked him when he took over from Willie but I feel like he has done less of a good job since that first season, particularly with regards to: setting the batting order when Reyes doesnt play (he chooses speed over OBP skills) and his use of the bullpen.
The way this forum is becoming filled with "inexcuseable" and "obviously" is really annoying. These are all complex issues.
Cora leading off today. Inexcusable. If the lineup on Mets Blog is correct [Cora, Castillo, Wright, Jacobs, Bay, Francoeur, Matthews, Barajas, Santana] thats three starters (reyes/beltran/murphy] missing from opening day, and i'd have started a different guy than Manuel is choosing in all 3 spots. Assuming I had control over the roster it would be Adams, Pagan, and Carter. But giving him the benefit of the doubt and saying the front office didn't give him a choice in who made the roster [tejada vs adams, jacobs vs carter] thers still Pagan and theres still the worst hitter in the lineup leading off. and hasn't Pagan earned the opening day start at home? both statistically compared to Matthews and by whatever intangibles you'd like to look at?

Re: IGT, Opening Day, 4/5/2010

For all you losers that can't view Newsday , some guy named Mike Gavin ponders life altering questions.
By Mike Gavin First pitch of the 2010 Mets season is just hours away. It's officially time to talk baseball. Here are some gameday questions: Why is Mike Jacobs batting fourth? Listen to the sound of ball meeting glove. Behold the sight of the greenest grass you will ever see. Smell the aroma of ballpark hot dogs. Pencil the name Mike Jacobs into the fourth spot in the lineup. One of these things should never be done on Opening Day, or any other day for that matter. Yet Jacobs will bat cleanup on Day 1 of the 2010 Mets’ season as Carlos Beltran recovers from knee surgery. With Ike Davis, the organization’s best first baseman, getting additional seasoning in the minors despite a strong spring, and Daniel Murphy nursing a knee injury, Jacobs gets the starting nod. But batting cleanup? That’s like putting a punter at left tackle. Jacobs may have some pop, but when he isn’t hitting a home run he’s striking out (132 strikeouts in just 434 at-bats last season). Obviously Jerry Manuel is putting the left-handed hitting Jacobs between righties David Wright and Jason Bay. But a career .254 hitter (.313 OBP, .476 SLG) batting cleanup hardly evokes hope on the one day of the season that all stadiums should be filled with it. Why is Gary Matthews Jr. playing over Angel Pagan? Match-up? Both are switch hitters. Numbers? Pagan is 1-for-6 in his career against Marlins starter Josh Johnson and Matthews has never faced him. Perhaps Manuel flipped a coin or is going in alphabetical order. He said both will get opportunities to play consistently in centerfield as the Mets evaluate their options during Beltran’s absence. On a side note, not sure how many pitches Jason Bay will see with Gary Matthews Jr. as his protection. If the Mets have a lead in the eighth inning today, who pitches? Help Wanted: Setup Man. Just as questions remain regarding the identity of the replacement centerfielder, the bridge to Francisco Rodriguez is yet to be built. The guess here is that it will depend on match-ups and be a combination of either Pedro Feliciano, the lefty specialist who lobbied for the job in spring training, or Ryota Igarashi. If only Jerry Manuel had a Gameday Questions blog post. Why exactly isn’t Jose Reyes playing? David Lennon recently wondered if the Mets brass were being overcautious by giving Reyes an extended spring, thyroid notwithstanding. Is it Reyes’ thyroid or the Mets’ recent history of medical treatment that is keeping him out of the Opening Day lineup? If only Omar Minaya had a Gameday Questions blog post….

BAT WRIGHT SIXTH! BAT WRIGHT SIXTH! Have run into two co-workers today who are big Met fans and attempted to casually chat them up on the topic of Opening Day... only to have them both launch into whiny/funereal rants on the team. Were it not for the HR-related complications that might ensue, I would have been tempted to joyously and optimisticially punch them in their respective noses. If you can't get worked up for Opening Day, baseball fans, then you might be better served to pick up a different hobby.

They are introducing the entire staff. a nice round of applause for equipment manager Charlie Samuels and for his assistant. dead silence for the entire medical staff. hah. applause for the hitting coach, not really for dan warthen. Ruben Tejada gets a nice hand as does Mejia. Pagan and Feliciano get it louder and a nice welcome for Igarashi. a long applause for Francisco Rodriguez, do the fans know what he's going through? all the stupid music makes it hard to judge some of the fan reactions over the television. Manuel applauded with i think a smattering of boos. starting lineup... indifference to the top two, the cheering for wright began before they even said his name, and a nice welcome home "the first baseman we welcome back to the mets, number 35, mike jacobs" and a great round of applause for newcomer Jason Bay. Matthews, Francoeur, and Barajas round out the lineup with a little applause and a long round of applause and cheers for the starter Johan Santana!

Re: IGT, Opening Day, 4/5/2010

Lots of positive signs: Wright's homer Bay's triple and hustle - he really turned it on around 2nd; he also hustled hard in the 7th to the ball hit deep in the hole that Hanley threw him out on. Barajas' double Santana (of course) Solid relief by Nieve. Some troubling signs: Gary Matthews Jr.'s routes to balls in center. I know he is going to pale in comparison to the 5 years of Carlos Beltran (plus 1 of Cameron before that) we've seen but he was giving me agita each time a ball was hit in his direction. Jacobs and Cora being in the opening day lineup. It's always nice to get the opener. Darryl threw out the first pitch; some group of soldiers appeared to lip-sync both times they sung. The curmudgeon in me wonders how much jet fuel we waste by doing flyovers. Mets fans booed the training staff, Perez, Green and gave a mixed reaction to Jerry. Almost everybody else got solid cheers, the biggest of which went to Wright, Bay, Santana and Rodriguez.

Some good stuff out at the park yesterday. I totally forgot about Strawberry's first pitch when I was posting my pictures. Came out of my 'loner' shell a bit so to speak and actually met a half dozen bloggers/bluecaparmy before the game. I wasn't overly concerned with Matthews play. He got to everything in enough time, and does seem to have some speed. (Try comparing him to Maybin playing yesterday instead of Beltran. works wonders!) The wind was probably an issue too, but he got there, hustled, pivoted and threw in hard every time. I hope Beltran's magnificant glides are back sooner than later though.

Just heard a post game interview in which David Wright said that seeing Johnson (and hitting him well) about a week ago in ST helped the Mets yesterday. Jerry had Santana pitch in a split squad game just so that the Marlins wouldn't see him before yesterday's opener. Whether or not you think that decision had anything to do with yesterday's result, you can't argue with the results. Later

I did abandon the IGT yesterday to go for a run (and get boned on trying to listen on my iPhone, being discussed in the non-baseball forum) but I expect to keep up the CSB coverage on weeknight games, when I can't even join the IGT till my little Fvarmint go to bed.

Hey, as the progenitor-- I dragged that in here, didn't I?-- I'm as big a CSB supporter as anyone. It just felt very OF 2009, though, and I figured we needed a clean break from last year. Put away old things, so to speak. That said, hey, Opening-Day-mood-lift aside, it's not like the season REALLY feels all that different, so...
Gary Matthews Jr.'s routes to balls in center. I know he is going to pale in comparison to the 5 years of Carlos Beltran (plus 1 of Cameron before that) we've seen but he was giving me agita each time a ball was hit in his direction.[/quote:32g5brzu] Holy crap, I know the wind was kicking and all, but man, was this frightening. EARLY PREDICTION: Lil' Sarge's fielding will cause at least one case of early labor in an expectant mother this season.

Re: IGT, Opening Day, 4/5/2010

i think the wind had *a lot* to do with it. Was great also to see Pagan come in and pinch hit a single, not so great to see him get picked off but then fortune favoured the brave.

Re: IGT, Opening Day, 4/5/2010

Jerry says he'll use the same lineup as yesterday until the Mets face a lefty, which, I think, won't happen until Saturday. So more bench time for Pagan ahead, if Jerry sticks with that plan.

That will definitely motivate Pagan .
Posted this on the UMDB Facebook page, and figured, what the hell, I'll post it here too:
FUN FACT: Jason Bay yesterday became only the fourth Met to triple in his first game as a Met, and the second to do it on Opening Day. The other three: Jose Vizcaino on Opening Day 1994, Luis Rivera five days later, and Brian McRae on August 8, 1997.

Honoroable mention for the only pitcher to triple in first/only plate appearance as a Met/Major Leaguer? Eric Cammack, off Ron Mahay of the Marlins at Your Name Here Stadium, eighth inning, July 5, 2000 (albeit in his sixth game overall as a Met). Cammack's triple followed a triple from Benny Agbayani. None of the first game triples came on a first plate appearance as Cammack's did, nor did any of them drive in run as Eric Cammack's did. Also, I conflate Eric Cammack and Jim Mann.

Cammack is the guy who hit the triple. A lifetime 3.000 slugging percentage as a Met!

Just like I do with my real babies, I will stick CSB in the closet and shut off the light.

I must've misplaced my glossary. What's a CSB?

Creepy Sun Baby. He watched over the Mets last year.

Count me in among those who do not need to see Creepy Sun Baby in 2010.

Hit to left-center I believe, and the-not-exactly-fleet Cammack busted his rear end getting to third. Running hard? Yes. Running fast? Not a chance. I can still see everbody laughing at him from the dugout after he slid in safely.
