Some numbers to chew on while you wait for the game. With RISP through 6 games the Mets are batting .................if you were to guess what would you say? it's something for 53 What is that number?

14? It's not good. (although having an attitude of making 'productive outs' is not going to help that) Maybe we need to bat Castillo 5th. He's had the best numbers in this regard over the last couple of years.

Re: IGT - NY Mets @ Colorado Rockies 4/13/2010

53 turns at bat is a ridiculously small number, especially when spread across 10 or more guys. While the O is cause for concern in general, this isn't the thing to be concerned about, necessarily.
53 turns at bat is a ridiculously small number, especially when spread across 10 or more guys. While the O is cause for concern in general, this isn't the thing to be concerned about, necessarily.[/quote:pkbi69l2] I would agree that it easily could be more of a fluke in general, and with the exception of GMJ and Jacobs I'm not concerned about the offense, it is a trend that the Mets have struggled with in the past. Doesn't it seem like they can be too aggressive early in the game when they should be taking pitches, and not aggressive enough when the bullpen is struggling and they've got a late inning rally going?

Re: IGT - NY Mets @ Colorado Rockies 4/13/2010

I wouldn't even say that. I think the issues generally are that Jacobs and GMJ aren't very good middle of the order hitters, Cora isn't a particularly good leadoff guy, Barajas and Francoeur when its said and done will make too many outs and Reyes, Bay and Castillo are all off to slow starts.

Yes it's a small number, just trying to stimulate the brain . .189 (10 for 53) Courtesy of the secretive Newday Colorado’s bullpen has been stellar thus far, striking out 17 in 20 2/3 innings and posting a 2.18 ERA.

Re: IGT - NY Mets @ Colorado Rockies 4/13/2010

Lennon writes down his thoughts on the line up
41 m ago By David Lennon The Mets want to put Jose Reyes in the No. 3 spot. That's obvious. It's why Jerry Manuel had him there for the team's first intrasquad game way back on March 1. And if it's really such a big deal, then why did Reyes -- with Gary Matthews Jr. and Luis Castillo on base -- rip the first pitch he saw for a two-run triple? Not only was it the first pitch of that at-bat, it was the first truly competitive pitch that Reyes had seen in 286 days. Now Reyes has played two games since returning from the DL, both in the leadoff spot, and the Mets have struggled to score. Overall, they are hitting just .189 (10-for-53) with runners in scoring position after six games. Reyes likes to hit in the leadoff spot, but he's got to be a team player, too, as the Mets wait for the return of Carlos Beltran. It's probably too early for Manuel to take that leap with Reyes, but he may have to get a little more creative if this lineup continues to falter. With Luis Castillo returning tonight from a two-game break, and Angel Pagan likely to be centerfield, why not roll the dice and go with this lineup vs. Rockies' lefthander Greg Smith? Pagan - cf Castillo - 2b Reyes - ss Bay - lf Wright - 3b Francoeur - rf Tatis - 1b Barajas - c Maine - sp
ALERT - That is not tonights line up and likely will not be a line up you will be seeing soon

It really looks like Matthews and Jacobs are the first two things that are going to give, barring an imminent hot streak on either of their parts. We'll need another couple of turns through the rotation in order to get a sense of whether or not it will be as big a problem as I fear.

New Mets beat writer gets his feet wet with this blog
Capt. Obvious weighs in: Big week for Mets » BY ANDY MARTINO DENVER—As my first act of today, I’ll appoint myself Capt. Obvious. As my second act, I’ll call this six-game road trip very important for the Mets. It is somewhat counterintuitive to place so much drama on an early-season series, but the issue here is the Mets schedule. After three games in Denver, the team heads to St. Louis for three. Then it’s back to New York for four against the Cubs, three against the Braves, and three against the Dodgers. What do you notice about all those teams? Anyone? You in the back? Right answer. They are all pretty good. This week, and for the rest of the month, the Mets will define themselves either as plucky competitors against the N.L. elite—or they will lose a bunch of games, and face growing shouts from the public about replacing the manager and perhaps general manager. The Mets opening week was not quite as dismal as the record would suggest. Jon Niese and Mike Pelfrey, two essential players, showed their talent. The team set a Citi Field record by blasting four homers on Friday night. The best-case scenario regarding Jose Reyes’ return came true. The bullpen was generally terrific, a potentially major development if it holds. But because of last season, these Mets need to win more ballgames in order to stave off a public outcry, and perhaps impatience from upper-level decision makers. That’s not ideal for a baseball team navigating the natural ups and downs of a long season, but it is reality for the Mets. It is a tough assignment, trying to win consecutive road series against top teams. I’d say the Mets should be at peace to take two of three in one and drop two of three in another. Two series wins would be a stretch (though of course it will be the goal going in), and losing in a sweep would be, uh, not so well-timed.. So there you go. This is an important time for the Mets, who send John Maine out there to set the tone tonight. It is fair to call Maine’s first start troubling, because of his diminished velocity and general underwhelmingness (yes, it appears I just made up a word, but it works in that spot, no?) Last Tuesday, trying to connect with the good vibes lingering from Opening Day, Maine instead allowed four runs in five innings. The Mets might prefer a different pitcher in that spot—hitters park, quality opponent, struggling pitcher is not the ideal equation—but that’s the reality. It will be interesting to see what the Mets do with it. Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/#ixzz0l0XsZLEm

It's something that bothered me last year. Seems like a fundamental issue. Take a strike if the tying run is behind you in the ninth. Take a strike if the tying run is well behind you in the eighth. If nothing else, make the pitcher pitch.

Reyes swings at the first pitch a foot inside.

When Maine threw that ball down the right field line, it was like an usher had just shown 2009 to its seat.

A lot of pressure on Niese and tonights IGT starter after me and Maine sucked elephant balls.

I knew it. I had thought I heard something goofy there, but had my hands full with YoungerPoop each time Tulo came up to bat:
Troy Tulowitzki's at-bat song is "Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus. Makes walking him a real crime , while researching and going over the charts with my IGT coach for yesterdays game I happened upon this blog about at-bat music for Ryan Spilborgh. http://blogs.denverpost.com/rockies/201 ... nted-love/
