Buffalo Bisons 2010

Last year I was able to listen to Buffalo games at 1520 AM on my car radio.
I hope they will be broadcast on the same station this year.

There are many prospects on that team who we will be hoping to see in the majors soon.
In case you're wondering, the announcers aren't on that list.

If you have the radio frequencies for the other farm teams, please post them.
Thanks,

Re: Following Buffalo

Caught the last inning of Thursday's Buffalo season opener against the MFY's AAA team.
Down by a run, up came Thole, Fernando Martinez and Ike Davis (who had three hits earlier in the game).
Pop up to left.
Strikeout swinging
Strikeout looking.

Still some work to be done. Thole has shown good on base skills in his career, but he swung at the first pitch.

But I'll guess at least one person calls WFAN today to rant about bringing Ike up immediately.

I caught the end of the broadcast tonight.
Davis' home run went half way up the batters' eye behind the 408' sign in dead center.
Oh yeah, and the wind was blowing IN! (seriously)

Buffalo batters walked six batters. If they keep this up, they'll be known as the Buffalo Wild Wings.

Picking up the thread. I waited until I resolved some technical problems that prevented me from being able to view the Buffalo (and other minor league) box scores.

Aldrois Chapman is scheduled to pitch for Louisville against Buffalo tonight.

First-place Buffalo, you mean? They swept the weekend series against Louisville, coming back with a furious, 4-run 10th-inning rally to win the Sunday game, scoring the walkoff on Chris Carter's (.329/.387/.600 through 22 games) 2-run HR. The Bison are 15-9.

Re: Buffalo Bisons 2010

Good news: The Bisons scored 7 runs last night, 6 off highly touted Cuban signee Aroldis Chapman.
Bad news: They lost by 13 runs.
That is not a misprint, boys and girls.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb ... a_bufaaa_1

Chapman hit 100+ MPH four times, according to the stadium speed tracker. (102 MPH twice)
Parnell, in his one inning, the only scoreless one thrown by a Bison, hit 98 and 99.

Buffalo is now 15-10 on the season.
They close out the homestand tonight with RA Dickey on the mound. He is working on a streak during which he has retired the last 27 batters he's faced.

Golf clap to Bobby Parnell, who, in pitching a scoreless ninth, prevented the aptly named Louisville Bats from pulling off the rare feat of scoring in every inning.

Several interesting tidbits from the weekend's action in Indianapolis, where the Bisons dropped two of three to the creatively-named Indians:

-- Dillon Gee got hammered like a clumsy Home Depot employee on Friday night, taking the loss after surrendering 5 ER on 6 hits and 5 walks in 5 innings. After his first two scoreless starts, he's been seriously middling (5.81 ERA in the intervening 4 starts).

-- From the "Seriously? SERIOUSLY?" department: after missing close to a week with a balky back, FernyMart left Sunday's game after one at-bat, having hurt himself legging out a ground ball," as per Bisons.com. More about the injury in coming days.

-- Josh Thole may be turning a corner? Slappy the Catcher had his first three-hit game of the year on Sunday, including a run-scoring triple. He's batting a strong .286/.348/.524 thus far in May after an unfortunate, putrid April (.172/.242/.259).

-- All glove, no hit? Not necessarily so. Ruben Tejada appears to be heating up himself, going 2-4 with a double Sunday to extend a six-game hit streak, during which he's gone 8-19 (.421) with a trio of XBH.

-- Mike "Don't choose the BP, buddy, go for the" Hessman had hisself a weekend, going 4-for-10 with a 3-run HR, two 2Bs, a couple of walks, and a pair of especially-grizzled "When I was just starting out..." stories. He's nursing a roomy season OPS of .988 (with .633 slugging!), and has kabonged 9 kabongs and 19 extra-base hits on the year.

-- Your SPCA CarterWatch Update: Carter went 2-for-4 in sunday's Bison loss... with another HR, raising his season rates to an unseasonably-hot .339/.395/.615 kinda place. He's in the midst of a ten-game hit streak, during which he's a Delta-Burke-sultry .425/.465/.775. Feed the Animal, please.

Re: Buffalo Bisons 2010

Down 7-5 to those Louisville Bats, the Bisons rallied for three runs and a win in the ninth. Mike Jacobs homered and provided the winning margin with a sacrifice fly. Hessman also homered (his 10th!), and Elmer Dessens pitched the final two innings and picked up the win.

Dillon Gee hung in there through the first four, but was battered for six runs over the next 2 1/3.

Backup centerfield candidates:

Jesus Feliciano: .360 / .400 / .438 // .838 in 93 PA
Jason Pridie: .297 / .345 / .399 // .743 in 148 PA
Fernando Martinez: .244 / .300 / .378 // .678 in 83 PA

I guess Nieuwenhuis can also be considerd a candy-date at Bingo: .313 /.349 / .500 // .849.

Re: Buffalo Bisons 2010

Feliciano is more a corner outfielder, although I guess he could play center.
Martinez hasn't been playing for a while with a lower hamstring problem. ("not considered serious") Don't know if is is on the DL.
Nieuwenhuis has been doing well, but is starting to strike out again. He may be the CF answer in the future, but I feel he's still 1 year+ away.
Pridie is a CF, is a lefty batter, and might perform better than GMJ. Jury is still out on my assessment on him. He doesn't knock my socks off when I listen to the games.

Another CF prospect I've started to follow is Sean Ratliff at StL.

Fernando is activated but still balky. Leg and back.

I'm clearly not talking about a centerfielder of the future, but a reserve for some part of 2010.

The primary knock on Captain Kirk, as I understand it, isn't so much the platoon split. It's strike-recognition/strike-zone-"control" (as measured via out-of-zone swing percentage or, more readily, walks, and walks vs. strikeouts).

Lots of Ks are workable-- if frustrating to watch from the stands-- if he's walking a bunch. Up until last year, he hadn't walked at all; last year, that walk rate came up to near-average, and a power boost came with (coincidence?). If he can maintain, like, an 8-10 percent walk rate, and the power accompanies him as he moves up through the minors/to the majors, then that'll play in a MLB starting slot.

Has anyone seen him in center?

Re: Buffalo Bisons 2010

There's buzz out there that the Bisons are looking to add the Kingmanesque Val Pascucci, currently playing with the independent Lancaster Barnstormers. Val last came through the organization by slamming 28 underappreciated homeruns for New Orleans in 1998. He's 31, has a career .883 OPS in the minors, and has only 32 games with the 2004 Expos to show for it at the major league level.

I guess you can read into this that the Mets are planning on keeping Carter in the bigs or that that they're planning on keeping Nick Evans in Binghamton, but man, are they trying to turn Coca-Cola Field into a sluggatorium or what?

MFS62
May 14 2010 08:24 PM
Re: Buffalo Bisons 2010

He has homered tonight in his debut with the Bisons.

As for Kirk, here's the response I got:
I'm confident Nieuwenhuis can play centerfield at the highest level. His athleticism is plenty strong enough. His reads off the bat are improving. His range is above average. A year ago I wasn't too sure about Nieuwenhuis in centerfield, but the way I saw him play center so far this year, I've come around to it.

In last night's 8-6, extra-inning Buffalo loss to Charlotte, Mike Hessman goes 2-3, with a double and a Paul Bunyan-y home run. He's at .317/.398/.697 and leads the International League in HR, Slugging, and OPS.

Everyone else goes to the bench or DL with injuries:

-- Ruben Tejada went 0-1, committed two errors, and went to the bench with "dizziness."

-- Jason Pridie made a gorgeous catch to rob a homer in extras... and left the game with a hamstring strain, with a DL stretch likely.

-- Josh Thole went 2-4 with a double and walk (YAY!) and promptly hurt his hip tripping over a bat while catching in the 11th inning (BOO!). He's day-to-day.

-- Andy Green was hit by a pitch on his left hand and left the game; X-rays scheduled for today.

I kind of like the balls-out roster management that will occasionally lead to somebody playing awkwardly out of position once in a while. It makes them human.

But I don't think most managers like it.

there's an understandable reluctance by managers & gm's to take a risk with something that can go wrong and *BE SO OBVIOUSLY TOTALLY YOUR FAULT*

ie: Castillo's pop drop last year was terrible, but it didn't cost Omar/Jerry their job. If Daniel Murphy had done it having been shunted into 2b for a week rather then Alex cause he could hit while Castillo was having a case of the owies then that might cost you your job.
I'm not saying it's right.
If LaRussa wasn't LaGenius he'd have copped way more shit for that 20 inning piece of crap then he did.

Re: Buffalo Bisons 2010

The Buffs showed Norfolk traitors what they missed out on by kicking the Mets out of town, completing a three-game sweep at Norfolk's Harbor Park. The sweep leaves the Bisons a half a game behind the Syracuse Chiefs in the International Leauge's Northern Division.

Jesus Feliciano prepares to head to New York and leave behind .385 batting average, 57 points above his nearest International League competitor.

The Marlins have responded to the Mets sweep by calling up slugging prospect Mike Stanton, which should eliminate a big chunk of the competition in Mike Hessman's bittersweet pursuit of a minor league home run title.

Unlike the parent team, the Bisons have been playing some of their best ball on the road, where they've now won seven of their last nine. Their southern swing takes them next to Durham, where Bobby Livingston, Dillon Gee, and Tobi Stoner take the mound against the Bulls.

Livingston was tossed from his last start after hitting Syracuse's Josh Whitesell in the back of the head. Whitesell, not particularly dazed in his Gazoo helmet, could be seen in replays mouthing "it was a breaking ball" but the ump ran Livingston, interpreting the pitch as payback for Whitesell knocking Josh Thole out of the game in the first inning, catching the Buffalo catcher on the noggin with his backswing.

Bobby Parnell has had a dimming effect on the lights, throwing 6.1 scoreless over his last four appearances. Bobby leads the Bisons' bullpen in strikeouts (34), innings pitched (30.1), appearances (18) and holds (4).

Per Lennon

Jesus Feliciano was not in today's starting lineup for Triple-A Buffalo, further evidence that he will join the Mets for tomorrow's series opener against the Padres at Citi Field. Pretty much what we told you in today's story in the wake of Omir Santos' demotion to Double-A Binghamton on Sunday.

Looks like Jason Bay -- the Mets' interim backup centerfielder -- can breathe easy again.

OK,
I wanted to wait until y'all fully digested your breakfast before I posted this.
In last night's Buffalo game, Mike Jacobs struck out four times and hit a solo homer.
Typical, right?
Not exactly.
His home run was inside the park.

A 10-1 drubbing? Shut out for six innings by former temmate Nelson Figueroa? Seven losses in a row? Sounds like somebody misses Jesus Feliciano.

As I listen to the broadcasts of their games, it seems like the present lineup is a strikeout waiting to happen. Feliciano was the only real "put the ball in play" kind of hitter they had. Fernando Martinez has rejoined the team after DL rehab, and has been hitting well since his return.

Re: Buffalo Bisons 2010

The Mets have picked up 30-year-old minor-league veteran Jorge Padilla from the Blue Jays system, in order to add depth at Buffalo.

As a singles-hitting utility outfielder having a good year, but on the wrong side of father time, he should fit right in where Jesus Feliciano left off, and his presence in Buffalo should give Feliciano some confidence that the Mets aren't looking to replace him right off.

He had a brief tryout last year wtih the Nats, and kinda stunk up the joint. He has a good arm and went 2-6 in his first start as a Bisonian. Padilla had actually been setting the world on fire, hitting .439 in the month of June, and was shocked to hear of the deal.

"Oh man, it caught me by surprise," Padilla said of the trade. "I didn't really know I was going to get traded. Here I am. I'm healthy, thank God, and looking forward to keep doing what I was doing."

Ken Oberkfell added, "The guy is a good hitter and makes things happen." That's the sort of quote that shows why Obie can be my AAA manager any day.

Padilla had previously passed through the organization, going .295 / .358 / .415 // .773 for Binghamton in 2006. These slash stats are so close to his minor league career line (.290 / .358 / .416 // .773) that it's almost nutty.

Re: Buffalo Bisons 2010

Bisons avoid the sweep by Charlotte yesterday as Pat Misch wins his seventh.

Val Pascucci hits his ninth homer in only 33 games. He currently has more homers than singles (8). His 17 walks are nothing to sneeze at though, and it gets his OBP up to a respectable .336 despite a .222 batting average.

The Mets sent reliever Clint Everts to Toronto to acquire Padilla. Everts was the high school teammate of Scott Kazmir and iirc looked like a potential PenPal in spring training but was pitching to a 6.94 ERA with Bingo.

Re: Buffalo Bisons 2010

So, in his first 20 games as a Bison, Jorge Padilla actually has a higher batting average (.333) than he had in his first 50 games with Las Vegas. If the Mets keep Jesus Feliciano up (Carlos Beltran may have something to say about that), he may not qualify for the batting title and Padilla might steal it away.

Another midseason acquistion, Jacob Turner, has been hitting well from the second base position (not literally from the postition), and has put up a .300 / .349 / .394 // .742 line since coming over from Norfolk. The 25-year-old had a cuppa with Baltimore this season, before being claimed by the Mets.

Maybe this should be in the Bridesmaids thread, but heck with it.

Re: Buffalo Bisons 2010

Your Buffalo Bisons have won nine in a row, and have pulled within 5 1/2 games of their Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees in the race for the International League's North Division. Their three games behind the Louisville Bats in the wildcard race.

Last night's game was a 9-4 victory over the Pawtucket PawSox and their new firstbaseman Carlos Delgado. Delgado went a mere 0-2 before being lifted. Nicke Evans, however, however, showed him how it was done, going 2-5 with a double, 2 RBI, and a run scored. Lucas Duda added his sixteenth and Kirk Nieuwenheiss his seventeenth on the season, but his first at AAA. Bridesmaid Chad Cordero fanned two in a scoreless ninth.

Jesus Feliciano needs to start piling up at-bats fast if he's going to qualify for his batting average title.

Buffalo was chilled last night by a shooting outside a downtown restaurant leaving four dead. Lets hope the streaking Bisons can give some degree of comfort. But man.

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Aug 19 2010 11:09 AM

Staying 5 games back in the loss column (and 2 in back of the wild card leader, Louisville), with a 7-6 home win over Rochester, during which Dillon Gee set a Buffalo season record for Ks (throwing 8, for a total to date of 144 in 145 innings), Brazoban and Cordero threw scoreless frames, and Russ Adams and Justin Turner* hit it over the wall.

*Justin Turner last night: 3-4, HR, BB, 2 R, 2 BI.
Justin Turner this season at AAA: .311/.376/.464... which seems to be the equivalent of a .694-.695 OPS in the majors, with decent defense and versatility.
Justin Turner up in the majors instead of Ruben Tejada? Megdal, Toby Hyde, and a handful of others say "yes."

Add me to that handful. I think we're doing no favors to the Mets, Castillo, or Tejada right now. Plenty of time for Tejada to be a defensive sub in September.

I get the idea, though, that nobody thinks of Turner as a viable option at short.

Pretty sure we have a shortstop.

I like the idea of getting Tejada some experience, but it looks like he's clearly overmatched right now. I'd give Turner a shot.

Turner's played a little third and first, too.

When you're filling out a bench, versatility's a key tiebreaker, especially when the team's carrying three catchers.
