You forgot the poll choice "Seriously? These things exist?"

Re: Walking poles

If the walking is taking place entirely on flat sidewalk then the poles are strictly there for show purposes and what they show is that you are completely dorky.
If you're in the woods where they might be used for balance while climbing a hill, hopping over a stream, or swatting a branch out of your way (or to kill a an angry wombat that attacks you) then they're OK. But, even then, it ought to be a stick you found in the woods and not some store-bought designer thing.

Re: Walking poles

Thanks for the picture or I wouldn't have known what they were. There aren't too many sidewalks up here in the 'burbs.
My first reaction from reading the thread title was to check my wallet for singles.

Only white people it seems are doing all the crap stuff in the polls, rich white people no doubt. I've yet to come across anyone doing the walking poles though . Probably not a Bronx thing , maybe in Ardsley though.

I think people in Poland are entitled to walk, just like people everywhere else.

Yeah, but they can't chew gum at the same time.
Or is it that they have no rhythm, I can never keep track of these things.

But Melvin Koslowski, the 10 foot tall center of the Polish national basketball team says he wouldn't touch one, nor would he allow anyone to use him to touch one.

You just need the right outfit and pole to pull it off:

I love that they're both wearing their fancy REI* sweat-wicking tops, fanny packs, and rugged outdoorsy hiking shoes on what appears to be the sidewalk in their town's park. The walking poles are almost the least ridiculous thing in that picture.

I've seen a few sets of walking poles click-clack down the sidewalks of Long Beach. Seems the lamest thing ever. I wish I would've thought of it.

*And I like REI.

Actually, I first saw them in Fredericton, NB, one of the reasons I found the city so charming.

I have a hiking pole myself -- a nice wooden one. People are usually positively impressed by it.

Oh wait, what?

When I get old enough to pull it off, I could go for a solitary walking stick. It makes me feel like a benevolent pimp*.

i'm sure there are exceptions, but urban dwellers I've encountered using the pavement ski poles have always exhibited a sense of entitlement beyond all rational proportions.

Well, yes-- mental defectives are eligible for a very generous SS disability benefit.

I say a single wooden walking stick is way different than a pair of graphite, sidewalk ski-poles. A walking stick is kinda cool. Folksy.

Unless you're hiking up a mountain trail< I see no need for such a stupid implement. Thankfully, I have never seen anyone with these pointless walking sticks.

Those things are appropriate only for hiking. Last I checked, sidewalks were pretty solid in terms of footing.

Re: Walking poles

Just to be Devil's Advocate, the activity is known as Nordic walking and the purpose of the poles is supposedly to give the upper-body some activity while walking as well as making one's strides more beneficially cardiovascular.

Re: Walking poles

They used to annoy me even when hikers used them. Then one day I was on a hike and giving this guy grief about needing a pair of carbon fiber poles. About halfway through the hike, I got stuch halfway across a rushing stream. Dude hands me one of his poles and I´m across in ten seconds, with completely dry feet.

I bought a pair of poles the next day and I use them regularly for hiking. They do give you extra balance when crossing streams, and they make life easier on your knees.

But, for anyone under the age of seventy walking on a sidewalk, uberdorky. Your upper body needs activity, do some pushups.

Re: Walking poles

while i would never use one, unless i was old and infirm, i secretly love the kind that have a dragon's head on top, which pops open with a secret switch and out of which can emerge a deadly epee'... or one that separates into a pair of billy clubs or nunchuks.

I'm such a dork.
