People eat THAT?

Presenting the KFC Double-Down. I'm pretty sure I remember a Tracy Morgan 30 Rock gag about something like this.

For Americans worried about what fast food restaurants are doing to their buns, KFC has a solution-- eliminate them.

Those would be sandwich buns, which you won't find on the chain's new Double Down. Instead, you'll find two slabs of fried chicken holding together two pieces of bacon, two melted slices of Monterey Jack, and pepper jack cheese and Colonel's Sauce. Evidently, no vegetables were harmed in the making of this sandwich.

What anginas we humans can induce!

That looks incredibly unappetizing.

You know, Super-Size Me aside, one can actually eat pretty well at McDonald's. Their grilled chicken salads and fruit and yogurt parfaits are nice items, and they've kept me away from things like that monstrosity pictured above.

When you're on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and you need something to eat before getting home, McDonald's becomes a viable option.

That said, I'd totally try one, without the bacon. (Just not a bacon fan.)

Re: People eat THAT?

I don't have anything against bacon as a flavor; it's smoky and delicious. I just can't honk on a slab of bacon. (Same deal with onions.) They're okay in stuff, if it's disguised, or in Bac-O form. When a burger comes with bacon, I usually order it with it to get the effect, then pull it off and give it to my wife or MiniWolf when the burger arrives.

Re: People eat THAT?

I had a job back in the early '80's where a guy mentioned he had never been to McDonalds. Once he realized that he was the only person in America who had never been he decided that he would remain that guy. That day I swore it off and that lasted about 15 years til I was stuck on the New York State Thruway with my kids and they were hungry. However, since my kids have gotten bigger it has again been years since I've eaten there. I do, however, use their bathrooms at rest stops.

Living in NYC there's really no reason to ever set foot in any chain restaurant (except for kid pressure). If I lived elsewhere I recognize that I might well feel differently.

Other than an occasional craving for an Egg McMuffin, I have no desire to eat at McDonalds. But when you have small kids, you do end up there at times, and it's nice that they offer salads and stuff for parents who don't want to eat fried grease.

Re: People eat THAT?

That sandwich is oh, so wrong.
But not for the reasons mentioned above.
I prefer Popeye's chicken for moistness and taste. But if I can't find one of those places, I go to KFC.
I always knew that I would be served a piece of something that actually resembled a part of a bird, complete with a bone to pick the meat off.
But now, it looks like KFC has succumbed to the pressure of non-real chicken eaters everywhere.
They are producing the dreaded "Chicken breast".
Shame on you, Colonel!
Have you no sense of tradition?

On second thought, if you're going to make a sandwich, I guess breast cutlets are ok.
Y'know what?
It DOES look pretty good.
I'll take two.
With a diet Coke.

Ditto on the Diet Coke-- when I was working on a graveyard shift as a dispatcher during school, I'd often kill off a two-liter in one eight-hour shift.

I still chug the stuff with Francesa-like voracity, although its phenylke-terrible effects are leavened somewhat (I tell myself) by the liter of water I slowly consume as the work day wears on.

In other news, I make 37 bathroom visits a day.

In the footsteps of the "Double Down" come the Ditch Dog, Smoked Meat Poutine and Pancake Stackers.

Been by, a few years back; I remember it pretty well, since we drove about 15 minutes out of our way on a road trip to hit it.

Was a little underwhelmed. The dog was okay, and the relish was interesting, with a guac-like consistency and cabbage/carrot in there; the bun on my dog was limp, though, and the staff pretty damn brusque-- and I have a high tolerance for brusque.

There are a few places in north NJ that do the deep-fried dog; there's somewhere decent in Fort Lee, but I can't remember the name... though I think it starts with an "A." (Anyone?)

No, but being in NJ and 10 miles or so from Fort Lee (and it's between me and Citi) I'd be happy to know and try it.

No, the place I was referring to was Crif Dogs on the Lower East Side. I usually get the BLT (bacon-wrapped fried dog with lettuce and tomato. that makes it healthy right?), but it's also the 'secret' entrance of a speakeasy, which I've been meaning to try, but cant' find the time and money for $16+ martini's, as good as they're rumored to be..

Impressive. And not just because you waited on the Shake Shack line. I need to try to fried chicken one of these days.

I don't like Nathans. Shack-cago dog is very good. Nathans fries are good though. There are a lot of french fries at Citi Field, from Nathans, to box frites, to shake shack, to catch of the day's seasoned fries (comparable to Chickie and Petes. suck it Philly/CBP)

What Leiter said. I saw that TV piece on Rutt's Hutt about a year ago, a few days before I was going to be about 20 minutes from the place. So I made it a point to go to Rutt's Hutt. I was underwhelmed. I failed to see what was so special about the place, and why it would merit the publicity it garnered. I'd say it's just an ordinary fast food joint with a unique -gimmicky- way of cooking their hot dogs.

Re: People eat THAT?

"It's a Whopper!"

=#BF4000]"It's a Pizza-Thing!"

Stop-- You're Both Right! (Sadly, no pics. Yet.)

Burger King plans to introduce a giant hamburger shaped and flavored like a pizza to its new Whopper Bar in New York City, adding to the growing list of extreme sandwiches at restaurant chains.

The NY Pizza Burger is made with four quarter-pound Whopper patties, mozzarella cheese, marinara sauce and a pesto-flavored but nut-free “Tuscan Herb Mayo.” They are placed on a 9.5-inch bun, which is sliced into six wedges and offered for $12.99.

Officials from Miami-based Burger King said the pizza burger, which is intended to be shared, would likely be introduced next week, with an official rollout the following week. Each wedge is about 400 calories, they said.

The NY Pizza Burger is currently planned just for the New York City Whopper Bar location, which opened July 31 near Times Square.

The pizza burger will join the Meat Beast Whopper, which is also exclusive to the New York City Whopper Bar. The Meat Beast is a Whopper topped with pepperoni and bacon and sold for $6.99.

The NY Pizza Burger is one of a series of “bar favorites” on the Whopper Bar menu, including the Bourbon Whopper with Cheddar, bacon, onion rings and Bourbon-flavored sauce, and the California Whopper with guacamole, bacon and Swiss cheese. Both are priced at $6.99 each. All of the burgers are customizable, with 18 different toppings, some for free, some for a 50-cent surcharge.

The California Whopper is currently the best-selling specialty Whopper at the New York location, said John Schaufelberger, Burger King's vice president of global product marketing and innovation.
