It starts today.
Anyone heard yet if Tiger is playing this year?

Never heard of him.

Phil tied for the lead with 5 others at 5 under.

And he shoots a friggin' 68, even as he lips out four putts.

I hope Tiger wins and looks the media in the eye and gives them the finger

Right, because they created his problems.

The end of round 1 sees 50 y/o Freddie Couples (-6) leading an old-man brigade at the top of the leaderboard, one which includes 60 y/o Tom Watson tied for 2nd at -5

The Nike ad that ran with the voice of Earl Woods was just creepy and really are these people beyond doing anything?

Ad is no longer on Youtube but an alternate version is

Re: Masters - 2010

I saw the original ad and it had several messages:
1) Son, you did a bad thing and I'm ashamed.
2) There are probably lots of golf players and fans who have cheated on their spouses. Shit happens. Nike understands and supports you, just like we're still supporting Tiger.
3) So, go out and buy Nike brand stuff.

Right, because they created his problems.

I could see where Ashie's coming from. It's not shocking to me that a 35 year old great athlete who's worth hundreds of millions of dollars can have sex with many women. It's also none of my business. And Tiger doesn't owe me any explanation for his conduct. Tiger might even still feel this way. It's possible that Tiger's mea culpas were more insincere than the underlying conduct that led to his public apologies.

A part of me also wishes that Tiger would've given the finger to the media and the public in response to his affairs (pun!). How much more advertising money does the guy need anyway?

It's been a while since we've had a good antihero sports superstar, no?

It'd be kind of awful, and weirdly compelling, to see Tiger Woods turn into Tyson-from-a-good-home.

None as far as I'm concerned but that's a big part of the problem; he can't take all this advertising money for cars, credit cards, shaving junk, watches, etc., go on '60 Minutes' to talk about his education centers for kids, show up almost exclusively only for those tourneys (non-majors anyway) which are connected to his sponsors, sign exclusivity deals with certain magazines so as to further control his image (and get paid for it) and then give the middle finger to everyone claiming that his image is none of anyone's business.
To his credit that's not what he's doing - at least not yet - but, short of putting people w/microphones and cameras in the bushes outside his house, it's one person's fault that the media is talking incessantly about this and it's not anyone in the media. Sure ESPN's become an all-Tiger network lately but they always seize on the biggest name guys (think Farve, Bonds, etc.) and cling to their story for all it's worth, and so as to trumpet the fact that they have rights to the first two rounds of the Masters.

P.S. Tiger's even thru 8 in today's round and remains at -4.
Ian Poulter (thru 9 holes) and Ricky Barnes (thru 8) have joined Couples at -6. Fred is even par thru 11 in round 2

Re: Masters - 2010

Round 3:
- Tiger starting to leak oil, particularly with the putter, and is currently 6 shots back (started the day at 2)
- and then just as Lee Westwood builds a 5-shot lead over the field and starts looking like he's going to run and hide, Mickelson goes *Eagle-Eagle* on 13 & 14 ... that's a 3 & 2 on a par 5 & 4, or a total of 5 shots to dunk two balls in about 1,000 yards worth of consecutive holes
- and now Westwood bogeys #12 and he and Phil are tied. Lost a 5-shot lead in about 10 minutes.

It's these combos of possible birds & eagles matched with the even-present danger of double & triple bogeys that makes this tourney the most fun to watch.

Re: Masters - 2010

The final round didn't quite hold the back-and-forth, lead-changing stuff it sometimes does, but still some fun moments as Phil Mickelson won by three shots over third round leader Lee Westwood. It is his fourth major and third Masters.

Oddest part was probably seeing Phil play like Tiger and Tiger play like Phil
Mickelson was bogey-free w/four birdies, and the one moment where you thought he was going to get stupid and blow it he pulled off an absolutely great shot: out of the woods off a bed of pine needles between two trees and about a 200 yd carry justbarely over a creek to within about 4 feet of the flag. He actually wound up missing the putt for eagle but got the bird and the hole didn't blow up on him.
Tiger, on the other hand, was all over the course notching only 8 pars (plus five bogeys, four birdies and two eagles) for a three-under round and a fourth-place tie for the tourney. He even, for the first time I can remember, missed a short putt on account of losing his temper from a previous missed putt. That three-putt (14th hole) cost him any chance he might have had at catching up.

KJ Choi, tied for 3rd at the beginning, briefly held the lead until bogeys on 13 & 14 dropped him back to a 4th-place tie w/Tiger.
A late-charging Anthony Kim - birdies on 13, 14, 15 & 16 - grabbed third place.
50 y/o Fred Couples was hanging in until going bogey-double bogey on 11 & 12

btw, after his Eagle-Eagle holes on Saturday, Mickelson missed a 3rd consecutive Eagle by about 6 inches. No one in the booth or out on the field believed 3-straight had ever happened before.

Re: Masters - 2010

Except for the part about being really good at golf, Anthony Kim is like, exactly like my brother.

Your bro is given to wearing huge attention-grabbing, Texas-style belt buckles too, huh?

Re: Masters - 2010

That's actually my brother's. Anthony borrows it for tournaments.

I mean, there is the obvious, same last name, same first initial. But both Anthony and my brother have the same doughy-body, the same vacant look on their face that shows they don't fully get it, but also carry themselves with a cocksure attitude that makes it obvious that they think they do.

My wife says I'm describing that entire generation.
