The continuing adventures of Westboro Baptist Church

So, they picket daily in Topeka, show up at funerals for gay-bashing and murder victims, make their hateful presence felt at AIDS hospices and memorial events, protest the opening of the Holocaust Museum, and-- more prominently of late-- show up to military funerals with signs reading "Thank God for Dead Soldiers," claiming that the Lord is punishing the United States for wickedness.

So where's this comically-odious crazy train made station now?

West Virginia, where what looks to the unbelieving eye like a tragic accident set up by possible mining-company neglect is revealed for what it really is: God's hand smack(ing) down "rebellious sin and defiance of God, His standard, and His servant's faithful words."

At a distance, the incivility and inhumanity are indeed comic, almost amusing.

Those aholes showed up in Long Beach a few weeks back and picketed Wilson High School, a Jewish Community Center, and a Martin Lawrence concert. Yes, a Martin Lawrence concert.

Impressed that things didn't go bonkers here and the high school kids did a stellar job of simply mocking them, bringing their own signs, some of which read stuff like this:

"God Hates Figs" (with a Fig Newtons package taped to the sign)
"God Loves Slayer" and..
"God Hates Jay Leno"

Those Westboro people are stupid motherfuckers.

They had that site godhatesireland.com , not sure if it's still active as it's blocked at work.

Some of the things he clams about Ireland
He told his congregation that in the past he had

“ ...warned America about Ireland’s sad, sick, sodomite culture and fag Irish Senator David Norris’ case before the European Court of Human Rights. (Incidentally, the “Openly-Gay” Irish Senator Norris was represented before that Strasbourg European Court, by the famous Irish President, Mary Robinson.) We warned that WBC has had lots of experience with Ireland’s militant sodomite citizenry, steeped for many decades in ignorant, blind, idolatrous Catholicism, belching out their vile fagspeak, slander, and blasphemy against God and His Word—cursing WBC members as guests on Dublin talk-radio shows. Remember, Martin Luther said Catholic churches, seminaries and monasteries are nothing but sodomite whorehouses filled with unnatural brute beasts and devils. We warned that the very leprechauns of Ireland are likely to be fags![54] ”
Phelps' attack on former president Mary Robinson and Senator David Norris, both widely respected figures, drew ridicule in Ireland.

You've got to watch out for those gay Leprechauns-- they'll run right up your shorts.

Those people are sick. They show up at these things hoping to incite people to attack them so they can then sue those people and win compensation. They've been pretty successful with this strategy by the way.

Those miner families in West Virginia though, man. I wouldn't fuck with those people.

Oh and irish - sorry to break it to you man, but God really does hate Ireland.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the police someday react a little slowly when they come a-harassing and grief-crazed people start pounding them.

We had them at the papal mass here in DC.

Somewhere, a small army of ADAs are wondering how they can get these punks within the bounds of that damn Constitution.

Which no doubt feeds their persecution complex like kindling to campfire.

I have to admit, I find this kind of stupid hate weirdly compelling, and-- this I'm a bit embarrassed about-- would probably watch a well-produced reality show focusing on their behavior, the individual church members' upbringings and the reasonable, tortured people looking to put them away. (One part sociological interest, one part morbid curiosity, I suppose.)

One of the daughters was on Irish radio a few years back and while it was somewhat interesting to listen to her getting grilled by the host to answer such questions as why does God hate fags/the Irish / Swedes/ and whoever else she of course could never give a reasonable answer(for the host at least) , it ended with her shouting obscenities and hanging up.

Same here in LB. The now-dead indie paper The District tried to interview the kids, and found them completely drunk on the kool-aid, but also opined that one of them seemed (to them) to be less into it and a bit more distant. Would like to read it again, but can't find it at the moment. Found this pic from Wilson HS, though. PS - would also probably watch a reality show on those wackos.

"ZOD HATES JOR-EL" is excellent.

Re: The continuing adventures of Westboro Baptist Church

When they protested at a high school in SF, entrepreneurial young students came up with a novel idea. Rather than bait the bigots and run the risk of escalating the conflict, the students took pledges...for every minute the clowns were on site, donations poured into local charitable organizations (Glide Memorial Church, God's Love we Deliver, etc).

You have to be pretty messed up if the Ku Klux Klan has to repudiate you (bottom of page).
