Some wonderful news to report that has really lifted my spirits today. I've been hired as a temporary staff member in our office to fill in for three weeks while our Energy, Environment, and Transportation junior staffer goes on imminent paternity leave. This week I'll be familiarizing myself with all the issues I'm going to have to deal with. I've been informed that this is going to be my audition for a permanent position in our office. My excitement over this, combined with the pain over my uncle's death, felt like matter and antimatter colliding in my body, and I thought I might pass out, but I'm fine. This is truly awesome, and I can't wait to start.

Well, starting Monday, I am officially a paid employee for the junior United States Senator from New Jersey. I sat down with our chief of staff at the end of the day today, he offered me a job, I accepted. However, he's not hiring me for just 3 weeks, but for 5 months, through the end of September. By that time, I anticipate somebody in our office leaving, or I'll find a position somewhere else. So yeah, I'm pretty freaking thrilled about this. This is where I wanted to work in the first place. And thanks everybody for your great advice. Keep it coming.

My job just got so much easier, as immigration reform just leapfrogged climate change legislation on the priorities list in the Senate, and we probably aren't even going to get to vote on it this year.

DO: Be nice to reporters! We're not the enemy. A good, informed staffer is a wonderful source. Lot's of times I'd rather get all the background from a staffer before talking to the big guy. The staffers seem to know the ins-and-outs much better.
