IGT 4/17/10 - Johan Begins The Turnaround
seawolf17 Apr 16 2010 09:33 PM |
Okay, enough of this. Let's turn this thing around and get it cracking. He's the ace, in a big spot, on national TV. BRING IT, Johan.

It'll have to be a pitcher's duel, then. Because I would bet a kidney that Jaime Garcia will pitch 6-7 innings of 3-hit ball tomorrow, whiffing a couple and generally Greg Smithing the fuck out of this squadron.

And the correct phrase is "Jason Jenningsing."

In case you're wondering if you get today's game on FOX, look here: http://doc-0g-8o-docs.googleusercontent ... 104rl9mu01 Kenny Albert (subbing for Joe Buck who gets a week off after working for one day in two consecutive weeks) and Tim McCarver with the call. Ken Rosenthal will be the sideline reporter, providing obvious comments and information that you already know while passing them off as insights.

Rasmus strikes out with 2 on and 1 out, with the pitcher coming up. Johan strands 'em. That'll leave Lil' Colby burning in the outfield.

He's got John Maine disease so far: lots of deep counts and foul balls resulting in 25 pitch innings even when you're not giving up runs.

OK Tim, I give up, how are you rating NYM ticket sales for the year after, what, 6 home games? I mean, I know this is 'jump on em when they're down' time, but there seems to be almost a contest among mediots to act as if this team has been cellar-dwelling has-beens for about 8 years now.

The worst part is how self-fullfilling it is. You distort the truth long enough, it takes on a truthiness of its own. Meanwhile in Realityland, that's 13 in a row for Jaime Garcia.

That's three Heilman references and three Castillo-at-MFY-Stadium references/videos-- all absolutely gratuitous-- if you're counting at home. So Manuel double-switched in Cora, then sent up Matthews for a pathetic AB, and now Jacobs is in. I'd rather have bunted with Cora, even with one out, and given Reyes a shot, then if this goes much further the bench isn't incinerated.

Buffalo had a shutout today. Unfortunately, they pitched some of the guys who are most viable as callups. Gee (W, 2-0) 7.0 3 0 0 1 8 0 0.00 Parnell (H, 1) 1.0 0 0 0 2 0 0 0.00 Dessens (S, 2) 1.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1.50 Gee has thrown 13 scoreless innings, striking out 12, walking one, and holding opponents to a .119 batting average.

If I were the GM and my manager called for a sacrifice bunt against a pitcher whose next recorded out would be THE FIRST IN HIS LIFE, I wouldn't even allow him to stay in the dugout to watch the end of the game. Fortunately for us Ryan Ludwick is a complete idiot -- sure, Pujols is up with a chance to win the game and Blanco throws out plenty of faster guys than me, but what the hell.

Eighties pop stars Phwam! Based on the postgame with Dan Warthen, it looks like the reason Francisco Rodriguez didn't get a second inning was because he was already gassed from warming up over and over. ONe more reason not to save your closer in extra-inning games. And speaking of warming up, give Dave Racienello some PotG love. OK, no, but give Alex Cora some.

Frayed Knot Apr 17 2010 09:30 PM Re: IGT 4/17/10 - Johan Begins The Turnaround |
PotG is going to take some careful examination here. More than ever this one is about when and how each player made his contribution as opposed to just the pure stats. Cora, Takahashi (getting out of that 1st-3rd/none out sit.), Blanco's caught stealings, etc.

To me it's more like LaRussa under-managed Jerry. Hard to claim that anyone out-managed anyone during that fiasco. As far as Frankie Rod: I suspect the "100" pitches in the pen is likely an exaggeration. Watching via a network it's tough to tell how often or how long he was up because they've always got so many other things going on so I have no actual idea, but it's a condition of today's game that the closer is so often "saved" for the situation which may never come up that he often warms up more than once in anticipation of the spot which may or may not come up. I'd just rather he use him earlier and hopefully for longer and get it all over with.

LaRussa twice sent up relief pitchers to bat with two out and the bases loaded while he still had a position player on the bench, and despite that he ended up running out of pitchers before Jerry did and therefore had to get three innings from position players. Jerry certainly should have gone to Frankie Rodriguez earlier (that was my peeve from the other 10-inning loss from the previous week) and he's by no means the smart guy I want managing the team. But I do think he outmanaged the guy who is considered a genius. (And that doesn't mean that Jerry's a genius; it means that LaRussa very much isn't.)
|
holychicken Apr 18 2010 01:24 PM Re: IGT 4/17/10 - Johan Begins The Turnaround |
This whole withholding the closer thing until a save situation really bothers. But I can kind of understand that as you need to keep players happy and a closer is probably going to make more money and be happier if he is getting a whole bunch of saves. What REALLY pisses me off is the emerging "8th inning guy." Now, instead of not being able to use your best relief pitcher whenever you want, you can use your TWO best relief pitchers whenever you want. When is some manager going to give the league the big FU and start using relief pitchers intelligently? Or is it only going to get worse?

I tuned in late and saw Kyle Lohse in LF and thought "LaRussa ran out of pitchers".
Then I saw Mather on the mound and realized that he had a pitcher fielding and a fielder pitching.

A Boy Named Seo Apr 21 2010 11:33 AM Re: IGT 4/17/10 - Johan Begins The Turnaround |
Was moving on Saturday and had the game on the radio on my phone all day, and I think it hit the 10th by the time I got back to the old apartment to start the clean-up. Great to have this game on the whole damn miserable moving day and even better it ended in a 'W'. Just read this thread start-to-finish. Some real gems in here. Helluva IGT, peeps.
