Battle of the Redeemed: Cubs-Mets IGT 4/21/10
John Cougar Lunchbucket Apr 21 2010 09:08 AM |
Hey well, we got a chance for a 3-game winning streak tonight as Ollie opposes Carlos Silva in a matchup of guys who fucked up in the first years of their respective multimillion free-agent contracts. I want some of JoseJose's NRG to bleed into the lineup and get some hits tonight. We haven't had a game with double-figure hits since the Barajas-Francoeur Homer Game a few weeks back.

Are you implying I should head out to the Citi? (Wish I could, honestly, gotta go shopping for the weekend bachelor party). I agree though, tonight's a good night for an offensive battering of the Cubs.

This is our first two game win streak right? , Some things one might not have expected......Pelfrey leads the team in wins.....ok , you could see that.....Pelfrey leads the team in saves with 1......Rodriguez came close to making last nights game a save situation.
Just testing batmags contention that it doesn't matter who bats where in the lineup.[/quote:2e0c63d2] The batting order would affect the team's ability to to score runs to maximum efficiency. I disagree, though, that Reyes would hit the ball differently as a result of being moved out of the leadoff spot.

Manny Acosta will, as reported elsewhere, be replacing Igarashi on the roster, and will be donning number 36. This also means that not every member of the Mets' bullpen has an 'R' in their first name any longer, a bit of minutiae that I noticed when they posted the used/available pitcher graphic on the big board at Citi last night.

The drizzle must have lowered Pagan's immune resistance, because he seems to have caught a case of the Sorianos-- fielding the sac fly in a weirdly breezy way, then turning Soriano's gapper into a triple-- in the field.

Funny. The Acosta appearance was, in essence, his Atlanta career-- raw, unbridled promise, then dazzling flashes (3 Ks), then flameout and falling apart-- in an inning and a third.
|
Edgy DC Apr 22 2010 04:56 AM Re: Battle of the Redeemed: Cubs-Mets IGT 4/21/10 |
Acosta is the sort of guy every team should have one of, except the Mets --- who ride their bullpen way too hard, and structure it without a back end, to be able to afford to carry a guy perpetually searching for a way to consistently retire batters at the big league level. With the kind of flashes of brilliance that leaves managers and pitching coaches sayign, "If only he could come out each night throwing like he did that one night in Atlanta, that'd be sweet. But too often he throws like that night a week later in Pittsburgh that everybody was trying to forget. And so the Peter Principle continually kicks in, getting him regularly promoted beyond his level of competeince. Atlanta, at one point, promoted him all the way to closer in 2008 --- preferent a dominating failure perhaps over an innocuous success --- and we should all be grateful to them, except perhaps if the pitcher we have now bears any psychic stars from his fruitless experience. He's been around for a while, haviing given the Yankees 5 1/2 years and never made it beyond A ball, so that's cool. He's from Panama. Baseball-reference says he's from Colon and lists him at 6'4" 170 lbs. Perhaps somebody needs to weight him again.

Okay so on the plus side - I went to this game last night and sampled the Blue Smoke fried bologna samitch and the fried Korean chicken. Bologna meets with my approval - not what I thought it would be. A nice THICK slab o' baloney, very tasty and a nice sized meal as well. The chickety-china-chicken (not what its called - don't embarass yourselves by asking for it by that name), available in 3 or 5 pieces, located behind left field in the World's Fair Market, was the winner though - crunchy, juicy, tasty and a wee bit spicy. I will definitely revisit that many times. Any other recommendations from the masses?
Yanks' GM Cashman brings Series ring to Cubs' Nady NEW YORK (AP) — Talk about an unexpected guest -- and what a treat, too! Cubs outfielder Xavier Nady received his 2009 World Series ring on Wednesday when New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman delivered the prize to Citi Field before Chicago faced the New York Mets. "It was funny. I didn't know when I was going to get it so I was surprised," Nady said. "It was pretty special." Nady praised Cashman for bringing it over himself and said the ring was "gorgeous." Nady played in only seven games last season. He went on the disabled list in April with an injured right elbow that eventually required ligament replacement surgery. He signed a $3.3 million, one-year contract with the Cubs in January. |

But I'm certainly tempted toward pettiness, or at least Jeff Lynn-ness, as well. I might feel different if it wasn't such a suck-ass loss, but. I guess I should feel more generous because Nady gave the Mets more than he ever gave the Yankees, but the first World Series ring presented on the soil of BetaShea, and it's a 2010 Yankees ring? That's a bitter pill.
