Memories of Mike Jacobs

Jewish Fan Appreciation Night, when they honored Mike.
Unfortunately, nobody checked to find out Mike wasn't Jewish. (Lobbing one up for Fman to knock out of the park.)

He was the only Met to get a solid hit against a position player last night.

I remember how many people got so worked up when we traded him to the Marlins for Delgado and what a terrible move it was.

- that there was far too much teeth-gnashing over his initial departure in the Delgado trade
- that his (apparent) final AB as a Met set up the winning run last night

I'm slightly surprised in the timing here - what with Muffy still a ways away - but I assumed end this was coming all along.

Re: Memories of Mike Jacobs

If Jake is truly gone, then he becomes the 40th Met to play his final game as a Met in April. However, if Gary Matthews makes it clear to May 1, Matthews is taken off the list and reverts to being the 39th.

Jacobs appears (if he doesn't accept Buffalo) to be the sixth Recidivist Met -- or two-timer -- whose second tenure ended in April: Ray Sadecki, Brady Clark and Pete Walker all wore out their second welcome almost as soon as their second chance season began. Marlon Anderson and Tim Foli lasted a year or more before their second stays expired practically in the shadow of Opening Day.

I really hope we're talking about him the way he remember the likes of Mike Howard and Mark Bradley vis-a-vis Darryl Strawberry. Man, remember all those first basemen we ran out there before Ike Davis was FINALLY called up?

I had no idea there were two Sadecki tours of duty.

Normally checking to find out if a guy's Jewish is something best left for a physician - or a Nevada "escort."

I dunno. A DFA isn't exactly gone enough for a memories thread.

Nelson Figueroa and Robnson Cancel were DFA'd like four times.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Jacobs landed in Buffalo and returned to the Mets at some point later in the season if somebody else got injured.

He's all "I ain't going to the sticks to rot on the bench" in the papers today. Papers also said he was somewhat blindsided by the move. I mean, nobody woulda been surprised had they switched out relievers, but credit to the Mets for recognizing already what a disaster 1B has become.

Wishful thinking.

May the wind be at your back instead of your swing's front, Mike. Now go get your shinebox.
