Just so you can plan your day

ESPN starts things off at 3:00 with a 'SportsCenter Special', an hour-long preview of tonight's NFL draft.
That leads them into 'NFL Live' at 4:00 where they'll discuss ... the upcoming NFL draft
At 4:30 they go to their 3-hour long 'Pre-draft show' where they'll provide in-depth analysis of an event that hasn't happened yet.
At 7:30 comes the draft - first round only - where they'll announce 32 names spread out over 3-1/2 hours

And, for those who can't wait, between now and mid-afternoon they'll run consecutive hours of 'SportsCenters' which are about 80% pre-draft speculation anyway.
Then they'll come back tomorrow and do it all again except I think it'll be even longer because it'll be two rounds.
On Saturday they've blocked off 7 more hours for rounds 4 through 7

Re: Just so you can plan your day

Even if I was a hardcore fan, I'd hate all this stuff. All the analysis, talk, breakdowns, guessing, etc, is all made completely worthless and irrelevant by reading a list on Sunday.

Re: Just so you can plan your day

I knew there was a reason I popped the catheter in this morning.

If I do watch, it's because it's amusing as hell to watch fellow Jet fans go apeshit-- either way-- at the Garden, and it's fun to see Kiper and Berman find different ways to praise guys for their "length" and "playability."

Speaking of Kiper... this bit's like our Brassky-ing of Lil' Ike, but with a touch more panache (Yoni Brenner for Deadspin):

• Breaking down thousands of hours of game film every year, Mel Kiper Jr. generally burns out at least three LCD screens per season. However, instead of taking a breather until his new television arrives, Mel Kiper Jr. simply plugs a coaxial cable into his shoulder and lets the footage just "flow through him" like heroin.

We're behind our all-time leading rusher here at Stony Brook, Conte Cuttino, who we're hoping someone takes a late flier on.

That name is tough... like a scouting-combine obstacle for broadcasters.

Re: Just so you can plan your day

I'd like to see 5 minutes per pick.

Good luck to Devin McCourtry and Anthony Davis, in that order..and Anthony should you fall out of the first round thats what happens when you blow off your school's pro day.

Re: Just so you can plan your day

I work late tonight.
Ryan and Tannenbaum have said they won't be trading up.
Of course, Tanny plays it close to the vest.
So I hope to be able to hear the Jets pick.

Jets #1, I'm going Everson Griffen DE USC, with a backup of CB McCourtey

Both should draw boos

Re: Just so you can plan your day

Supremely-- freakishly, even-- physically talented, but with a "propensity to take plays off," Griffen-- right down to the name, which kinda sounds like it-- reeks of Vernon Gholston.

This is where I'm at too.
I understand the importance of the draft as a whole but I can't see hanging on it for hours (and hours and hours and hours) to watch six names being read off every hour with a bunch of self-proclaimed experts over-analyzing the hell out of each one with an air of knowledge far above their actual track record for accuracy. And the amount of 'pre-analysis' is just the sports-geek equivalent of whacking off on TV: 'ummm, this team might trade up to a higher pick ... unless they don't. Stay tuned for more details'.
Even now that they've cut it down to 10 minutes per pick instead of the insane 4 per/hour rate that existed for years, I'd be bored silly inside 45 minutes.

Now, admittedly, I don't follow college football so all but the top names are pretty much foreign to me, nor did I grow up in a football household where these things were treated like life and death. But I remember years ago when I bunch of guys wanted to cut a softball workout short on a nice April weekend because they had to go home and 'watch the draft' and I'm like; "Really ... people do that?!?"

The drunk fans predictably booed Pittsburgh when it was their pick and then started chanting "she said no, she said no"......

Gary Cohen (big Jet guy) was wondering out loud how people could stand this also last night.

Didn't watch. But I'm kind of amazed that things didn't get rowdier with the Jet fans. I mean, it's like a green Coors-Light-fueled Mongol horde most years, and that's on Saturday afternoons.

The Jets got Kyle Wilson? At 29?

AWESOME. I actually remember him (from catching a few of the Boise State games that made national TV in the last few years). Dude's a cover stud, and a friggin' pinball-- super-quick, with pogo-stick legs-- who returns punts pretty decently, too. And he'll step into the NICKEL slot on this team.

Jesus Christ, this could be a Pro Bowl secondary and a half. (Literally.)

Re: Just so you can plan your day

The Ryan style of defense can never have enough corners. It will help against teams like the Pats and Colts who play multiple receiver spread formations.
Also- this kid returned three punts for tds in 2008.

He had been rated by some services to be a top 10-15 pick.
So, good fit for the team and good pick by the Jets.

What are the odds that someone like Taylor Mays or Golden Tate is still hanging around at #61?

Re: Just so you can plan your day

i''m a big believer in "best available player", and it seems like Gang Green got good value at #29, regardless of position.

But I'd still like to see them get a pass rushing DE, an OG, another WR, and maybe a kicker before the season starts.

You got your OG in the second round, 61st pick. Vladimir Ducasse out of UMass. 6'4", 332 lbs. All-American first team in Division 1-AA (FCS).

Re: Just so you can plan your day

Do peep this eye-opening Michael Silver column for Yahoo! right here, discussing... well... the worst job interviewers in professional sports, including Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland.

Last Wednesday, the night before he was selected 24th overall by the Cowboys, former Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant told me that during one of his predraft visits, a high-level executive of one NFL franchise had asked him if his mother, Angela, was a prostitute.

“No, my mom is not a prostitute,” said Bryant, whose background – including his mother’s lifestyle and past legal troubles – was under great scrutiny prior to the draft. “I got mad – really mad – but I didn’t show it.”

The offender was Ireland, whose franchise apparently holds nothing sacred in regards to its evaluations of potential employees.
