They could use your support here. Ollie and Takahashi have walked the lead away and we stopped hitting the knuckler after the first 3-3 now in the 4th.

Nice assist from Angel Campos (HP Ump) on the called third strike on James Loney (it was ball 4). Loney gets the boot after arguing.

That called third strike to Loney (that eventually got him run for ranting and raving) was an inning ending gift.

Good thing that Jerry didn't have Castillo sac bunting Pagan over to second base last inning. (Howie Rose was announcing as if the sac bunt was likelier than not). All three runs scored with two outs. If Castillo sac bunts, he doesn't walk, and the Mets ultimately score nothing. A sac bunt would've cost the Mets three runs.

It's Gehrig, DiMaggio, and somebody else --- I don't think Mantle. Ruth got a late start ptiching and didn't start in New York. Mays missed most of two years serving his country, though, so he had some catching up to do.

Thing is, that's the adjustment Wright needs to make. He hit well to that spot until last year when they park started eating them up. Hitting it there with less elevation will make him an MVP.

Rockin' Doc Apr 27 2010 08:12 PM Re: Ollie for real I.G.T Dodgers @ Mets 4/27 Game 2 |
Regarding the earlier trivia question, it appears that Willie Mays misses out on a technicality. His first six years were with the NY Giants. During that time he appeared in 762 games in which he ammassed 903 hits of which 228 were home runs. It's a reasonably safe assumption that Mays collected the needed 97 hits to reach the 1,000 hit plateau in his next 120 (or so games) since he hit .347 that next season. Unfortunately, they were as a member of the San Francisco Giants following their westward migration. Still, some pretty lofty company Mr. Wright is hanging out with early in his career.

Frayed Knot Apr 27 2010 08:16 PM Re: Ollie for real I.G.T Dodgers @ Mets 4/27 Game 2 |
Yeah, it was kind of a screwy question. The wording went something along the lines of '1,000+ hits, and more than X no. of HRs, within so many games from the start of their NY career' So while Mays misses out on account of losing two years to the army and then leaving NYC too soon, Ruth gets in on account of spending his earlier & non-hitting years NOT in NY.

I apologize if this has been posted already, but I looked up Chip Hale's Wikipedia article and found this: Chip Hale is also associated with probably one of the most memorable bloopers in baseball history when on May 27, 1991, while playing for the AAA-level Portland Beavers, he hit a deep fly ball to right where outfielder Rodney McCray attempted to catch the ball and ran through the wall.
|
Edgy DC Apr 27 2010 08:24 PM Re: Ollie for real I.G.T Dodgers @ Mets 4/27 Game 2 |
I get it. It wasn't "by this age," but rather "by this number of games." And to get into that club, better to be in Boston than in Korea. Pretty cool that no mid-career free-agent grab like Winfield qualifies either.

OK, I'm working on the city desk as night editor tonight, and I had three college kids job shadowing me, so I couldn't check the score until now. 1) Ollie couldn't make it out of fourth inning? Was he hurt, or did he suck that badly? 2) Looks like Wright got the big hit. But surprised to see 10 runs and no homers. Love this double-header!

Ollie had some trouble throwing strikes and the few he did were rapped pretty hard. It wasn't pretty but wasn't a classic meltdown.

But if the Phillies beat the Giants, the Mets pass SF for sole possession of the NL Wild Card spot. Both SF and Phil. entered tonight's game with identical 11-8 records. The Mets are now 12-9.
