We Have the Better Song

Richard Sandomir in the Times delves into New York baseball theme songs, finds ours is great and theirs sucks...in so many words.

Money quote:

“Musically, they’re both decent, commercially written songs,” said Bob Thompson, a co-author of “Baseball’s Greatest Hit: The Story of ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game’ ” and the founder of the Baseball Music Project, a series of multimedia concerts. “But the charm goes to ‘Meet the Mets.’ It’s more endearing.”

“Meet the Mets” has also proven to be more durable. It is played at Citi Field, used in promotional ads on SNY and is the introductory music to games on WFAN Radio. But only a short instrumental section of “Here Come the Yankees” is played before and after games on WCBS Radio.

FYI, the Mets have taken the field at least two of the last three games (the ones I attended) to Ms. Jarvis's recording of "Meet The Mets". And the players think I'm only applauding for them.

They played the Jane Jarvis version at the one game I attended a couple of weeks ago. (April 12 vs. Washington.) Isn't it great when the Mets do something right? Here's hoping for more and more good decisions.

That MtM beats HCtMFYs is the most obvious thing ever. What I wouldn't have guessed is that ours is the older one too.

The Bats blog is accepting alternate lyrics if some of you songwriters wanna take a crack.

Heard it on TV last night and loved it. Now if the Lets-Go-Mets cheer can get new life I'll been even happier.

Edgy - you have to submit the ethnically diverse version you penned a few years back. Still have it?

Sure, but that was just a couple of lines from the bridge. It was a sort of a Shea-as-Ecumenical-Safehouse version.

Nothing wrong with that, besides all the versions posted so far are taking whacks at our boys.

We need some enlightenment.

That's because people who post on the Internet suck.

Except here.

Here's the thing about "Meet The Mets"... it's the best song of all time. In fact, it's timeless; it's not even worth a discussion.

I know. I was thinking, "Better doesn't cut it."

Re: We Have the Better Song

"Meet the Mets" is to baseball theme songs what "Stairway to Heaven" is to rock masterpieces.

"Here Come the Yankees" would fit in nicely with "Convoy," "Playground in my Mind," "Run, Joey, Run," "Billy, Don't Be a Hero" and possibly, "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves." But with out the possible excuse of being intended to be bad.

(No sane person can argue that Clint Holmes sang "Playground" without knowing it was schlock.)

That was the "My name is Michael, I've got a nickel" song, right?

Oh, that's just enough to make you want to bury your face in a bowlful of shitty chili.

Even Venus Flytrap wouldn't play that.
