Binghamton Mets, 2010

Bingo is without the services of Nick Evans, hitting the DL for a week with bruised ribs. Check out this report on the Evans-less B-Mets, featuring (a) a great stab by Jonathan Malo, (b) a kooky-assed swing for a hit by Jose Coronado, and (c) a goofy young sportscaster that comes across like a Muppet Show parody. http://www.wicz.com/news/video.asp?vide ... one=Sports That was Tuesday. Yesterday, they bounced back with a 9-3 drubbing of the Portland Sea Dogs. Zach Lutz went 3-3, with a double and a homer. The Eddie Kunz starting experiment continued with three runs in five innings, and we also had a Clint Everts sighting, with young Clint tossing a shutout inning.

The sportscaster's head reminds me of a South Park Canadian... ... or someone with an adorable kind of tardive dyskinesia. -- I'm pissed that I missed Lutz with Brooklyn. I was hoping to catch a bit of him in that video. Alas. -- I'm pretty sure he'd be swinging a kid's banjo at the plate, but if this season goes splat, injury-wise, Malo seems as though he might be a defensive upgrade anywhere on the major-league diamond.

I have to get caught up on the B-Mets. I survived Philadelphia and am home today. The B-Mets are 14-9, 2 games behind New Hampshire. They just completed a sweep of Akron and have Eddie Kunz going at Erie tonight. I guess Kunz missed his baseball shot at the brass ring. Kirk Neuheisel in 100 AB's is hitting .300 with 8 stolen bases. Nick Evans has been playing well, which prolly doesn't matter to the big teams management. Full report off and running tomorrow.

The B-Mets won their fifth straight last night with Clint Everts getting the win. Eddie Kunz went six with 7 K's and 0 walks. I'm picking Lucas Duda as the first position player to go to the herd.

The B-Mets swept two from Bowie to reach .500 yesterday, with Mike Antonini and Josh Stinson giving up but a single run in six innings of starting work. They credited their catchers --- Mike Nickeas and Omir Santos, respectively, and indeed both joined the hit parade. Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit in both games, indeed homering in the first, and appears to be back on track. Reese Havens is OPSing at 1.077 since his promotion. Nick Evans is down to .875, but still leads the team in homerage. Zach Lutz continues to grind and Lucas Duda is blossoming, leadng the team in on-base percentage and showing well more power he had never shown before. Brad Holt, however, is steenking up the joint.

John Maine is going to have a rehab start with the B-Mets in Trenton on Sunday. D-Dad and I are going to be there.

The stadium is actually in a nice part of town. I don't love Trenton, but I've never felt unsafe going to Thunder games.

John Sickels: One player who does not have age on his side is New York Mets farmhand Josh Satin, already 25 years old. Scouts discount the UC-Berkeley (sixth round, 2008) product due to so-so tools and his age, but he's hit at every level of pro ball to which he's been exposed, including a .316/.406/.459 mark in the Florida State League this year. He moved up to Double-A last week and is 8-for-25 (.320) so far, albeit with a weak BB/K ratio of 1/7, granted sample size issues. Primarily a second baseman (although he has some experience at third and first), his range is limited but he's reliable on the routine play, not making many errors. A career .298/.388/.450 hitter so far, he's rated mostly as an organizational player, but strikes me as the type of guy who could end up being a surprise contributor in the majors in his late 20s.

Six straight wins for the B-Mets... ...annnnd Kirk Nieuwenheis is back... ...annnnd they're beating on the Altoona Curve, the class of the Eastern League... ...annnnd they had a grand slam last night from Raul Reyes (who?).... ...annnnd they pounded Altoona's Jared Hughes, the league's leading winner.
