Mike Bacsik, Please Report to Diversity Training

The onetime Met who told the New York Post at the outset of Operation Iraqi Freedom that the "liberals" could go screw off if they didn't like the impending war, has a viewpoint backfire on him.

Former major league pitcher Mike Bacsik was fired from his job as a Dallas sports radio producer/personality Tuesday, two days after he made a racially insensitive remark about "Mexicans in San Antonio" on Twitter.

Bacsik, a left-hander made famous by giving up Barry Bonds' 756th career home run, was fired by the station after his Twitter outburst, which came after Game 5 of the Dallas Mavericks-San Antonio Spurs series. Bacsik went on Twitter after the Mavericks' Eduardo Najera tackled Manu Ginobili and was ejected, saying "Congrats to all the dirty mexicans in San Antonio."

"It's been a rough couple of days," Bacsik told ESPNDallas.com Tuesday. "Obviously, I made a terrible mistake. It was very bad and stupid on my part. The last few days, I've been getting positive e-mails. But the station changed their mind and decided to go in a different direction."

Bacsik had been appearing on radio station KTCK.

"When you tweet like I did, you can't see the sarcasm," he said. "It's not a good joke. You can't tell if it was pure hate or sarcasm. I never got to say anything. My tweets were talking for me. When you tweet like that, it's not a playful, harmless thing. It's not what it was meant to be."

Bacsik, who originally was suspended indefinitely by the station, said that when the tweet went on national television, including CNN, the station decided to let him go.

"If you want to do a job like this, your guard always has to be up," he said. "It's tough because my guard was down. I learned my lesson. I'm owning up to what I did. I did a horrible thing. I'm very sorry and will try my best for my actions to speak louder than my tweets."

So...was his lesson "guard my feelings about the Mexican population of San Antonio" or think about why he finds that sort of thing "sarcastic" as opposed to hateful?

I'm really glad the people might start copping on to fact that saying "funny" stuff on websites/facebook/twitter is the same as actually saying it.

Re: Mike Bacsik, Please Report to Diversity Training

I was in San Antonio for work last year and went out drinking on that town's famous "Riverwalk," a labyrinth of restaurants, eateries and drinkeries on a muddy canal system a full block below the main city streets. It's a touristy kind of place, but when you're in town for work and you're eating in restaurants every night it's just where you go.

So I'm out boozing with my boss and another coworker and just got into it. Fully lit up. My hotel was on the Riverwalk and a walk/stagger home from where we were drinking, and I've never had a problem getting things together for work the next morning even with the big H.

My boss and I were staying at the same hotel... and we're walking back from the drinking and there's a bunch of, well, hmmm, let's see, I'd say, a bunch of guys akin to Mike Bascik's description. Just sitting on the steps in a not well lit part of the Riverwalk, possibly drinking and smoking. They looked like real hombres.

I, in my inebriated state and with a high school senior's command of the Spanish language, wanted to go "party" with them. My boss convinced me I'd probably be better off just going and passing out. I made him promise instead to continue drinking with me at the bar in my hotel (which should sound familiar to ABNS as I did this move in L.A. when I was out there).

Eventually, before the night ends, I end up on his balcony (we were in adjacent rooms), 18 floors up, threatening to jump over the balcony rail and yell "MURDERED!" on the way down. Why? I don't know, I was drinking.

The end.

When Bacsik game up the historic home run to Bonds, some thought that he did it on purpose:

Damn you, Fman, Damn you!

I was covering a university trustees committee this morning. They can be interesting, but there can also be periods of mind-numbing dullness. Luckily, the iPhone can help me though those difficult times.

So after checking e-mail and my story from the night before on the website, and still being in a period of mind-numbing dullness, I flicked safari over to the C-Pool.

I was reading your adventures with the usual mixture of admiration and horror -- and then got to the point about jumping off the balcony yelling "MURDERED" all the way down.

Damn you!

I attempted to suppress the laugh. The school flack sitting next to me heard it and shot me a look. The staff members sitting a couple feet away shot me a look. The academic vice president sitting at the table looked up and wondered if there was something not intended to be funny in her report. She shot me a confused look. And the trustees looked over and did not seem pleased.

I pretended to cough, and no one bought it.

And for the rest of the meeting, all I could think of was the sight of you yelling "murderrrrrrrreeeeeedddddd" all the way down, suppressing laughs all the time.

Other than hurting my standing with the trustees, that was great story.

Upon further review...

"...SB1070, the controversial new state law that requires police to ask for papers from anyone they suspect is in the country illegally."

Every WWII movie I've seen has at least one SS officer asking someone for 'papers'.

I knew that color blue at the top of the page looked familliar - it was left over from the football field at Boise State.

If your state had a 45-mile unprotected border with Canada, you wouldn't be so snarky about law and order.

Wait, what?
