Tonight the Red Hot Mets face their arch-rivals in Philadelphia for the first time this season.

Is this a big deal?

Re: The CPF View: Mets vs. Phillies 4/30

I'm somewhere in between.

The way peeps have been waiting to turn on this team and celebrate the inevitable ouster of their management, they've all been big games thus far. Many scribes --- and many fans --- are still desperate to declare this last run a complete illusion if the team doesn't take this series.

So I guess I say pretty big, if only for the un-necessary psychological urgency to prove something to the unfaithful faithful.

I think sweeping the Phillies would make a strong statement and could set the tone for the rest of the season.

Getting swept by the Phillies will be a big letdown, a burst of the gonfalon bubble.

Anything in between, it's just an early-season three-game series.

One game at a time.

That's all they can play.

Well _I_ [url]http://www.ceetar.com/optimisticmetsfan/2010/04/30/first-place-mets-play-for-respect/ think it's a big deal, in an overly dramatic way.

In actual baseball terms, not so much. But it would go a long way towards giving the Mets some confidence, getting fans to believe, and making Morgan and Miller have to figure out something nice to say Sunday night about the Mets.

Re: The CPF View: Mets vs. Phillies 4/30

this series is a big deal, not so much just this game. how we win or lose will be a big deal.

In the end, a 9-1 homestand doesn't mean much if we get swept, or start losing in devastating fashion late in the ball game.

if the mets can get to halladay and beat him, it'll be huge.
if they get completely shut down by him, it'll be huge.

This series has huge implications.

Re: The CPF View: Mets vs. Phillies 4/30

It's certainly the first big game of the year. We haven't seen the Giants yet but with that possible exception, Philadelphia certainly looks like the best team in the league (other than us). I don't think we need to sweep, but certainly take 2 of 3.

We have a clear pitching advantage on Sunday and probably a small advantage tonight so yeah, it's a big game.

Yeah me too.

I agree that winning 2 of 3 would be a big, big boost both to the team and the fans, but 'wide-ranging implications'? It is just another 3 game set.

I think it really depends on how they play and the types of games they are as opposed to actual wins and losses. That being said - getting swept would be a big-time bummer.

Re: The CPF View: Mets vs. Phillies 4/30

I'm sort of interested in how they do tonite -- I think if Niese and the lineup acquit themselves well, win or lose, we can look at it as a positive. So to that extent it's a Big Game.

Re: The CPF View: Mets vs. Phillies 4/30

It's only a big deal if the Mets do really well. If they get knocked around, then it's just another 3 game set in April/May.

See kids, that's called "hedging my bets."

I just see it as maybe a monkey/back kind of thing. If they take this series, they can get some wiggle room and maybe lose one next week without cries of falling skies.

True, but Francesa probably attracts that type of caller, whereas the more sane ones won't call. The callers tend to reflect the attitude of the host to an extent.

He cuts people off enough to make their points sound stupid too. A Yankee caller was discussing Girardi's use of CC (and he wasn't being very coherent anyway) but he tried to say that he didn't think CC should be out there in the first inning. (i assume he meant 8th, or some other inning) but Francesa cut him off and hung up on him and then called him an idiot for the first inning comment. Rather than delving into the substance of what he was actually trying to say.

On Francesa the other day a mets fan called up saying how he didn't like the lineup Jerry is trotting out there now....Reyes has go to be hitting first and Castillo hitting ninth .....both the caller and Francesa just started talking very loudly over each other...the caller was a complete moron.

They don't have to win it, they-- they just got to keep it alive, keep it on this same track. Friday, you got-- who you got? Kendrick? You gaaaatta win that one. Because Saturday's Halladay. But Sunday, you got Moyer, and he's showing his age. He's getting up theyuh. And who knows? So you gotta keep it alive, keep on track, you come outtovit with one, maybe two wins, who knows? Who knows? YOU HAVE A SEASON NOW.

Let's play that really fun game where you try to guess the ratings for different sporting events.

Re: The CPF View: Mets vs. Phillies 4/30

I never minded the ratings guessing game when it was with Russo. I guess the back and forth about how interesting a particular event was had interest versus Mikey just telling us what he thinks is important. He asserts himself a lot more, because there is never any disagreement. "No way Tiger wins this one. Not a chance. He doesn't come from behind."

As I said above, the series will only have an impact if there's a sweep, one way or the other. Going 1-2 or 2-1 isn't that much of a difference.

Re: The CPF View: Mets vs. Phillies 4/30

I believe that over the course of the season all game are important. Each win counts the same in the standings. However, some games are probably of greater psychological importance for the team and their fans.

I think getting back to .500 after the teams poor start was the first psychological hurdle to overcome. A series win, or hopefully a sweep, in Philadelphia will carry forth the momentum the team currently has going for it.

Regardless of what a series win would do for the team, I know it sure would make me happy.

Re: The CPF View: Mets vs. Phillies 4/30

Each win doesn't count the same in the standings, though. Wins against the division opponents count for more, because you're not only knocknig yourself up a half game, you're pulling them back (or knocking them back), relative to your position. And wins against division favorites, therefore, have even more import.

True. Wins within the division are virtually 2 for 1 in the standings.
