Forum Fahnestock Foot-about?!?

Chad Ochoseis and I were throwing around the idea in a facebook
thread about having a CPF hiking/meetup this summer at Clarence
Fahnestock State Park. My thinking is that this park is ideal for us
because it's accessible by car (right off the Taconic Parkway) and
the Cold Spring Metro North station (Hudson Line) is a ten minute
drive and we could car pool people wishing to take the train from
the city.

I'm pretty familiar with some of the trails in Fahnestock and could
plan a five-six mile hike with minimal changes in elevation that in-
clude a section of The Appalachian Trail, a couple of ponds, and
even an occasional copperhead! We could cap things off with a
picnic or migrate to one of the watering holes in Cold Spring to
cool off.

I think I brought this idea up in years past but it kind of fizzled.
Please discuss.

Honestly, it's a bit of a schlep for me. I'd be in a better position to attend this kind of event if it was somewhere in NYC.

You're welcome to hike with me in NYC on Sat 5/15 if you'd like :-)

It's a possibility, if I don't have a practice for my upcoming Dragon Boat race that day (I'm still waiting to find out the practice schedule) and if I can get home in time for the theater in Princeton that night.

We were thinking that we'd get at least somewhat out into the woods, which you can't do in NYC. Since I'm a fellow Garden Stater, I'm familiar with some places that would be convenient for you and me, and maybe marathon and Ashie, but they probably wouldn't work for the rest of the 'pool.

I'm thinking we can see who's interested, and then try to agree on a place that as many of us as possible can get to without too much hassle.

If Fahnestock doesn't work, Harriman State Park is also accessible by train or bus and isn't too difficult to get to from anywhere in the NYC area.

Me, I'll go anywhere.

I'm (we're) flexible on location and there's no reason that this
thread can't open up four different hikes over the course of the
summer in varying areas. I have detailed maps of most places that
would come up and I'd be happy to plan a route and organize hikes.

How many people here are interested in hiking in the NY/NJ area?

Sounds like a lot of fun, but alas too much of a hike (hah!) for me right now. Perhaps in a few years when the little guy is older. Have fun!

We went there last summer.....I had never heard of it until I searched parks in that area.....we did the Pelton Pond Trail and the beach there....very cool place....I wouldn't mind going again although the other trails would be a bit much for a kid.

Vic, we've known each other a long time now. Do we have anything
remotely in common besides the Mets, Jets, and Knicks?

I'm in town Memorial Day weekend and, God willing, maybe another weekend or two this summer.

I think any worthwhile hike should include an actual crane pool.

I can lead us to the pools, cranes are generally uncooperative.
