IGT, 5/17, @ Atlanta

OK, we're going for a complete reboot here, so let's leave out all photopun variations Let's go, Mets! "Lettuce Van Gogh, Mets!" and "Lesbians Wake Me up Before You Go-Go, Mets!" They were fun, but it's just. Not. Working. We have Pelfrey going against Derek Lowe tonight. Lowe, self-loathers may want to ignore, has a Perezian ERA, but is not being demoted. This thing will pass, and pass violently. Hold on, get ready.

What we need is a good fight song. What would Rage Against the Machine think of the Braves and their insensitive use of Native Americans as a mascot? Or we could rise up against those that seek to keep us down! Or better yet, focus on perseverance. We WILL hold on damnit! Re: IGT, 5/17, @ Atlanta

you can't really put Pagan for Matthews aside. No reason to sit Pagan or play Matthews. Not sure Bay's 0-13 should be hitting third or Carter, a guy who couldn't make the team out of Spring, fourth). Matthews is 3-17 against Lowe, if you were curious. Although that might be higher than his average this season..

Matthews in a pinch hitting roll is doing nothing, they should start him in all the games this series and if his current form holds up then cut him, maybe he needs a run of games to get going.

Holding to some thought that he could 'get going' is just looking to fail. Put your best players on the field as often as possible. Pagan is that. Give him a day off when we're not reeling.

Re: IGT, 5/17, @ Atlanta

Matthews went 2-2, and Jerry seems to want to get the guy going, and if this is what it takes, this is what it takes. But bad medicine is what I need. If he fails to get going, it may hasten the end of his tenure, rather than prolong it. More interesting to me is how Carter couldn't buy a spot on the roster the first six weeks, and is now the team's cleanup hitter two games in a row. See, Jerry learns! Overlearns, maybe, but he learns! Go, Jerry!

I think Jerry is going to pull a deal where GMJ starts three days in a row while Frenchy, Pagan, & Bay each sit a day (or more in Francoeur's case).

To put a finer point on it-- Pagan for Matthews starting. Matthews actually WAS largely involved in yesterdays runmaking business, driving in a run, scoring one, and getting on base in his two PAs, and he stuck around, replacing Carter in a roundabout sorta way. "A guy who couldn't make the team out of spring" is kind of a specious argument, innit? (FWIW, I'd probably flip Carter and Wright. But splitting up the righties does do a nice job of baiting dumb managers into playing lefty-righty and burning their relievers.)

Two of the team's five baserunners have been named Chris Carter. The other time up, he drove in the other guy. It's a two-run game, with three-plus innings to go. Yeah, let's pull that guy. Tell me Manuel's not in full-on not-to-lose mode, and I'll call you a liar, and buy you some Chick-Fil-A. Because I'm a nice guy, Chick-Fil-A's a damn good sammich, and it's not true.

Re: IGT, 5/17, @ Atlanta

The Braves close to 3-2 on a Prado double and long fly balls by Heyward and Jones. I haven't seen enough of Carter in right to form an opinion, but by all reports he is a high speed bus wreck out there. Lowe is still in for the seventh, Ike leads off with a walk, and the pulsating piston of power known as Rod Barajas singles. GMJ to bunt? No, Pelf is staying in, so of course he hits into a DP, and Pelf grounds out to end things.

Not sarcasm at all. It's impressive in the context of the Manual world in which we live. Jerry's rarely (it certainly seems to me) given a pitcher --- at least one not named Johan --- a chance to work his way out of a jam that late in the game. Tying run on third, go-ahead at the plate, hot hitter, one out, eighth inning, infield in, closer more-or-less fresh --- that's historically bullpen time for Jerry, no matter what the pitch count. That count was at 98 when Prado came up. And 100 may still be his golden number. But it's the first time I've seen Jerry let go of the dream of ever finding the formula for eigth-inning-bullpen-shutdown magic.

Re: IGT, 5/17, @ Atlanta

Thought you meant when they brought him in to start the 8th. I was surprised they let him face the hitter there. Especially him not being a strikeout guy, but once he did that i felt he should've finished the inning.

I was indeed somewhat pleased to see he even started the eighth, but I was all but certain that he would be pulled as soon as somebody reached base.

The loudest that stadium got during the game last night was during the wave. Braves fans are weird.
