Phillies Given 3 Extra Home Games

What utter and complete horsesh*t:

From ESPN

NEW YORK -- Global politics has upstaged baseball in Toronto.

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig announced Tuesday that the Phillies-Blue Jays series will be played in Philadelphia because of the G20 Summit.

The three-game series June 25-27 will be relocated from Toronto's Rogers Centre to Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park because of security issues for the G20 Summit. World leaders will gather at a convention center near the Toronto ballpark.

"After reviewing all of the options with the parties and taking all of the security considerations into account, it was determined that the best course of action is to play the series in Philadelphia," Selig said in a statement.

The game would have been ace Roy Halladay's first return visit after he was traded to the Phillies in the offseason. It's the lone interleague matchup between the clubs this season.

The rescheduled games will be considered home games for the Blue Jays, who will bat last, and the DH will be used.

Blue Jays president Paul Beeston said in a statement it was an "extremely difficult decision" to move the three games.

"By moving our games to Philadelphia, we are acting in the best interests of our fans, our employees, the players and the game of baseball," he said. "We did not want to move the games but in looking at the realities of this situation, we felt that relocation was the most prudent course of action."

Not mentioned in this article: they could have played the games in Cleveland or Detroit (the 2 parks closest to Toronto, for the record) and not in Philadelphia!

Did they not know that the G20 was going to be held there when making the sked?

Well, to be fair, those Canadian G-20 protests get pretty rough, sometimes.

For instance, I heard that someone attending one of these got curbstomped by bystanders recently, simply for wearing the wrong colors; another man's daughter was vomited on, merely because he asked the offender to protest more civilly. Often, protesters get so rowdy, the police must tase and tackle them.

Why, once, for a good while, the authorities saw fit to establish a temporary court to process unruly protesters on-site, because their comportment posed such a hazard to bystanders.

Wait... that's not Canadian G-20 protests, or Toronto? I must be thinking of some other place.

Could have played in Coca Cola Field, Stade Olympique, or maybe BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.

With the Jays now the home team for Canadian MLB fans, it could have been a good opportunity to have a home game on the road.

Personally, I think they should play in Miami.

Florida loses 3 home games to Puerto Rico (vs. the Mets) the week after G20. I'm sure PR would be happy to host Philly and Toronto.

Vancouver is probably out due to time-zone restrictions on travel.

Cleveland was a logical choice, as immediately following this series, the Indians play the Blue Jays...in Cleveland. It's at least driving distance from Toronto. As is Detroit. Or even Pittsburgh.

If the Mets (and Marlins, Braves and Nationals) are even paying attention, they should be filing formal protests on this issue.

Yeah, that's a hardcore dick move by MLB. What about Buffalo? Toronto is allowed to host a Bills game, why not in reverse?

would be nice to see baseball on montreal =)

but otherwise, retarded Selig strikes again..... I think the Cubs/Astros game in Milwakee may have been a bigger snafu.

At least that was was done under time constraints.
This time there's not only plenty of time but also plenty of places to go that might even be more beneficial to the game as a whole than Philly. Problem is those might also be less likely to produce a sell-out leading Bud to take the safety route.

I would have moved the games to Montreal.

See, that's why we need an Arizona-style law here in Michigan. It's tough being one of the border states, with all these Canadians streaming over the Ambassador Bridge. The cops need to be able to stop anyone with a Maple Leafs cap or a LaBatts t-shirt and throw their butts back across the river before they start breaking windows and carrying signs.

Actually, I suspect the Canadians are more fearful of the people from Detroit crossing the border.

Bull dinkey.
This is part of a sneaky plot by Selig to bring the DH to National League parks during the regular season.
The bastard!

Frenchy chimes in, accurately.

“That’s just bullshit,” Jeff Francoeur said, according to the Daily News. “That’s really not fair. That’s just not fair… It’s ridiculous… Absolutely crazy.”

Re: Phillies Given 3 Extra Home Games

I just visited the Dickie Thon Fan Club website (I've mentioned them before - invitation only to their main boards). The have members from all over Canada, the US and Europe (The guy in Germany is a big Mets fan.). Every year they have a meeting in a different major league city. They meet, greet, party and attend games. This year it was scheduled for Toronto to see that series. Tickets have been bought and hotel and airline reservations have been made. They are mightily pissed.

We should protest in front of CBP during the series. That should go over well.

Re: Phillies Given 3 Extra Home Games

Selig's thought process: the NFL did it after Katrina (moving the NYG @ NO game to NJ) so it must be OK.

Why not move these games to San Juan, too? Or anywhere else but for the one place that gives a team a competitive advantage? Because Selig's an idiot.

With a rainout in Denver yesterday, might the Phillies be getting yet another home game, when the Rockies come to Philadelphia?
