According to the NY Times Elaine Kagan is a lifelong Met fan. Would counteract Sotomayor's MFY-obsession. Not sure what team Ginsberg and Scalia root for (the other two New Yorkers) nor Alito (from New Jersey). We do know that Breyer is a Red Sox fan. I got nothing at all on Kennedy, Thomas or Roberts. Retiring justice Stevens a big Cub fan.

Alito is a Phillies fan. He even did the fantasy camp thing a year or two before he joined the Court.

Unfortunately, the Mets nominee has never been a judge. That may scuttle her.

I think there's no chance that she won't be confirmed. There have been many non-judges on the Supreme Court although not recently.

The guy who tagged her with her nickname, for instance.

Scalia is a Yankees fan.
Roberts is a Cubs fan.

I have seen references to Kennedy as a baseball fan but without a team mentioned. He was born (1938) and raised in Sacramento and worked for many years in San Francisco. Giants is the most likely scenario.

I've got nothing about Ginsburg or Thomas having a preference on the sport.

Thomas digs college football, I think.

I never got the impression that Justice Ginsburg has a non-serious side.

All I know about Clarence Thomas is that he drinks Coca Cola.

She and Scalia go to the opera together. Is that non-serious?

IIRC, he prefers nature films to televised sports.

Opera is the pretentious SERIOUS person's entertainment

Yay for having a Mets fan on the court, maybe we can finally find the new york media's pro-yankee bias unconstitutional.

of the people Obama was reported to be considering, I like what i've read about her more than the others. of course, she has the benefit of no judicial record on which to base an opinion.

i'm cautiously optimistic that she'll be ok, though Stevens was my favorite of the liberal judges.

Bush got to replace two conservatives in eight years, Obama 2 liberals in 2 years (so far). And alot of important issues go 5-4. Its amazing how close we have been to many things being different so often. This is, in my opinion, the biggest structural issue in our government. I'm sure a better system could be established, but I doubt anyone has the appetite for the process.

Um, that's a load of crap. It's not really my thing either but that doesn't make it any more pretentious than the Keith Urban concert.

Also, labels are tricky things. One might more accurately point out that Bush replaced one conservative and one slightly-right moderate, while Obama replaced two slightly-left moderates.

[quote="The Washington Post Letters section"]Other than her affinity for the New York Mets, I don't have any problems with Elena Kagan, President Obama's nominee to become the 112th justice of the Supreme Court. I write, however, to say that I hope a president will one day select a non-lawyer to the Supreme Court. Until this happens, a critical perspective will be absent from the court.

If they ever want a non-lawyer for the Supreme Court, I'm available!

I even promise to always wear pants under my robe!

Selecting a non-lawyer to the Supreme Court makes about as much sense as selecting a non-doctor to be Surgeon General.

And yet, Mr. Medavoy is, himself, a lawyer. Strange.

This. Pretty much tabloid stuff set to pop music-- it's just that guys like Mozart, Puccini and the like are working with a slightly different skill set than Timbaland or David Foster, and working to satisfy different tastes.

This reminds me of one of my favorite throwaway jokes from "Futurama": as Fry sits in his "vintage 1990s" apartment listening to "Baby's Got Back," Leela and Bender bust in and tell him to turn down the "classical music."
